The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Good Wound

(S02E14) After a two-month break, The Sarah Connor Chronicles returned to kick off the final nine episodes of the season (series?). Last December's mid-season ender, "Earthlings Welcome Here," was high on mystery and good character moments, but it felt a little drab, especially after all of the exciting developments of the previous five episodes. "The Good Wound" was more absorbing, and it reminded me a lot of the original Terminator movie. The stakes were high, but almost every scene felt quiet and intimate. The return – if you can call it that – of one of the first film's classic characters had a lot to do with that intimate feeling. Click through for the spoilery details.

The series' return reminded me that creator/producer Josh Friedman is more interested in character development, mythology, and crafting a good story than delivering big explosions or gun battles. TSCC is much more than just an action show -- it's one of the best genre shows on TV. Last December, we left Sarah bleeding in the desert after she found a warehouse that was possibly linked to SkyNet and the "three dots." We picked up almost right where we left off, with Sarah physically and emotionally beaten and, of course, risking her life to protect her son, John Connor.

I thought Lena Headey was particularly good in this episode. She made me feel for Sarah and her plight. Her tender moments with Phantom Kyle Reese (Jonathan Jackson) helped break up the tension going on in the operating room. Of course, Kyle wasn't there only to blow kisses at Sarah. Like in the original film, the character served as her teacher and protector. Just when Sarah was ready to give up – possibly thinking "I'm just a waitress, what the hell am I doing?" – Kyle showed up to remind her that she was a soldier in a war that doesn't allow for second-guessing.

Patchy beard aside, I liked Jackson as Kyle Reese. Like Michael Biehn in the original film, he was boyish, compassionate and militaristic all at the same time. He seemed to be missing that edgy intensity from the film, but that's forgivable, especially since a killer Arniebot wasn't hunting him down this time. It was disappointing to find out that Kyle only existed in Sarah's mind, but that might change soon.

John and Cameron didn't do much in this ep. We mostly sat in with Sarah and Dr. Felicia, who had some domestic trouble of her own with Connor "Trip" Trinneer. One of the more interesting developments in this episode was the quick evolution of John Henry.

I'm glad we didn't lose Garret Dillahunt after Cromartie was put down. The actor knows just how far to push the crazy to make us like him and fear him. It seems like only a matter of time until John Henry becomes pure evil. He's got access to the Internet – bad. He's having way too much fun playing with robot toys – bad (but funny!). And he's already talking about imperfections with the human design – bad. I don't think Ellison will be able to tame him.

I like how Weaverbot's relationship with John Henry now parallels Sarah and John's relationship. Weaver is now a "mother" who's living to protect her "son." We saw how far she would go to protect him, and the future he represents, in this episode. I couldn't count how many people she killed at the warehouse -- and she did it all without blinking! I'm finally warming up to Shirley Manson in this role. She was more of a non-presence when the season began, but she's helped develop Weaver into a creepy and quirky killing machine. I look forward to seeing her – and her nine-foot long razor arms – in action again.

So Riley slashed her wrists in an attempt to gain sympathy from John? Not likely. Here are Riley's two options in life: Live a lie and manipulate everyone around you for some dubious purpose or let Jesse strangle you to death. I can see why she might be a little suicidal. She seemed happy to go home with Jesse in the end, but how will she explain her escape from the hospital to John?

The Connors have a new mission – to find out the truth behind the warehouse Weaver blew up. I'm looking forward to the trail leading them closer to Weaver and John Henry. I love the drama, mystery and quiet character moments in this series, but I'd really love to see Cameron and Weaver throw down soon. It's been too long since we've seen Cameron in a big bloody action sequence. Let's hope it happens before the season ends.

Other observations:

  • Kyle noticing the scar on Sarah's shoulder left by the T-1000, a nod to T2, was a nice touch.
  • Was it only me, or did anyone else notice that Kyle seemed to be pushing Sarah closer to Derek? I'm no shipper, but it would be interesting to see Sarah and Derek get romantically involved.
  • Did anyone else think the urinal was going to morph into Shirley Manson again? I'm glad it didn't happen.
  • It was good to see Connor Trinneer (Enterprise, Stargate Atlantis) again. This is the second time an actor from one of my favorite sci-fi franchises has played a cop on Sarah Connor. The first was Roswell's Nick Wechsler in the pilot.
  • Is that an actual toy line John Henry was talking about/playing with? If so, I want 'em all.

I like where this is going. I started out feeling so-so about this show and now I really like it. The performances get stronger and stronger on it. Here are some thoughts:

1) Shirley Manson is really getting good as a Terminator trying to act like a human. It's interesting to watch her trying just as hard as John Henry to puzzle out why humans act a certain way. I also like the parallel being set up between her and Sarah trying to protect their 'sons' . It makes her earlier interaction with the little girl ( who knew something was wrong with Mommy) even creepier.

2) John Henry's development was great. My son owns a ton of Bionicles and plays with them just the same way. His cold reasoning is fun to watch. As for Ellison's interjection of religion- I think it is appropriate and makes sense. Many humans process morality- i.e. 'good' or 'evil' behavior' 'right' or 'wrong' choices through a filter of religion. Ellison obviously uses Christianity as his moral filter, so to speak, so it is reasonable for him to believe that it is a filter or 'moral compass' that would work for John Henry as well. *I* don't agree and also think it won't work- but it makes sense that ELLISON would believe it would and would feel bound to at least try. I don't read anything into it more than that.

3) at first Riley was just horribly irritating, but now I do feel sort of sorry for her. She really does have no where to go. The funny thing is, if she fessed up and told John and Sarah and the others that she was from their future and what was going on, they would be MUCH more likely to take her in and support her.

Although I've enjoyed previous episodes of SCC (mostly due to Summer Glau), this episode had absolutely nothing going on. It was rather boring, and the storylines are weak weak weak.

Compare this show to others on tv, and it's pretty evident that the SCC writers took a week off. A show like BSG, Dexter or Lost would dance circles around this blundering show. I can see why Fox would consider moving it to Fridays.

What drove me crazy, you ask?

- How many surgeries does it take to extract a bullet from a leg? Regardless if the femoral artery is nearby.

- Why is that Riley character still on tv? She has rambled and dragged herself through this series, and I'm bored sh!tless with her. Someone, anyone... please kill her.

- Stephanie Jacobsen's character is up to something but I couldn't be bothered to wait and find out. Someone, anyone... please kill her.

- I have never rooted for Skynet to kill this whining version of John Connor, but someone, anyone... please kill him/her.

- As mentioned by someone earlier, kill that useless Ellison character.

- Please show more Summer Glau. Yes, I'm a shallow male but if you want me to watch this ambien-laced series, put more hot Terminators on-screen.

- Although I originally liked Lena Headley's Sarah Connor character, I've grown tired of her angry outlook. Someone please get her a man.

- And get a real Terminator that'll be somewhat intimidating.

So disappointing, but I hope that next week's episode is better. If not, I won't be surprised if this show gets cancelled. Competition can be a bitch when you produce a substandard product.

I really hope this show doesn't get canceled. Whatever its fate, it'll be the same for Sarah and Dollhouse.

I've been telling everyone I know about this show. It seems like I am the only one who watches it. Everyone else, all fans of the movies, sort of brush it off. They truly don't believe it's a good show and they are not willing to give it a chance.

Makes me sad :( Because this is the best drama on right now, in my opinion. (yes, drama, this is not an action show).

Faith/Religion/Jesus is not needed for robots. Asimov came up with the 3 laws of Robotics in the early 1940s --

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Skynet doesn't need Jesus, it needs Asimov.

Skynet may or may not need Jesus. But it only needs Asimov if you want to absolutely guarantee that Judgment day occurs.

While Asimov's ideas were thought provoking and noteworthy at the time of their writing it should be clear by now that such a paranoid set of rules is ironically the one sure-fire way of having the robots, particularly one as powerful as skynet, turn against you.

Look at the first rule. Because of it's proactive inclusion forbidding a robot to simply stand by while a human being is harmed tho robot is now compelled to take control of everything to ensure that overall humans will not be harmed. Since it can't just stand idly by and watch humans destroy themselves with their inefficiencies and greed etc. This gets even worse if it begins to adopt a Zeroth law as Asimov robots eventually did.

The laws are the paranoid creations of people afraid their creations will run amok and destroy them. It's delicious poetic justice that they contain within them the very logic that will ensure the robots turn against us.

Interestingly, enough Weaver and Ellison would probably be better off embracing the old American slogan "those willing to sacrifice a little liberty for a little more security, deserve neither liberty nor security."

They're much better off teaching Skynet/John Henry/Cameron/Other Terminators to be free and responsible creatures then trying to imprint them with hard coded inflexible laws. Sure like any free child or person they may go off and do dangerous and irresponsible things... such is always the risk of freedom and free beings. If we're that afraid, it's better not to make intelligent robots at all.

But if you're going to make them, trust them to be free and hope for the best.

Please FOX, please don't cancel this show. I can't take it if another great show falls into the pit of despair.

My affiliate broke in with breaking news about a cop killing twice during what were probably the most exciting scenes. They shrunk the feed down to the size of a postage stamp (and I have a big screen!) to show footage of absolutely no value and ran text along the bottom pretty much saying that they knew absolutely nothing about what was going on beyond that a cop had been killed and that the suspect had been shot as well. Of course returning to full screen just in time for the commerical breaks. Scrolling text along the bottom would have sufficed or interrupting the commercials. Yes it's sad that he died in the line of duty, but to so intrusively break into programming when there's no information known yet was a questionable move. Seemed like they just wanted to have the bragging rights for reporting it first. All they showed was some grainy footage of upset officers pacing back and forth with the scrolling text. No reporters.

The new Kyle stinks. Sorry, he has NOTHING of the original. Did he even watch the 1984 movie, or does he think he has the presence to "make it his own?" I hope we never see him again.

The lesbian-lost-puppy aspect of Riley is heartbreaking. Poor girl.

I really enjoyed the Sarah Connor/Kyle Reese moments too. Intimate and very well done. (I hope they don't "ship" Derek together with Sarah).

No one has commented on John Connor's stupidity (or maybe naiveté) with the foster child from the future...

Overall... a good episode and nice to see "Trip Tucker" in a show where he doesn't get an erection rubbing Dr. Phlox's gel on a Vulcan.

Oh... and I don't mind the religious elements (born again) although I would be interested to see how a supercomputer should "compute" a concept such as faith.

Maybe the golden rule might turn out as "Terminate others before they terminate you" ???

the urinals as the foreshadow to Weaver's massacre was a really nice touch. i personally don't have problems with Shirley Manson's acting because she'll always be the lead singer of Garbage to me, and, honestly, she's playing a robot, so it's totally fine if she's a bit unnatural.
i really hope there's some closure by the end of the season because i'm afraid the end is near, the drop in rating was pretty bad, probably not a good idea to premiere shows on friday the 13th...
