Desperate Housewives: In a World Where the Kings are Employers

Desperate Housewives
(S05E15) "Camping? Have you met me?" - Edie to Dave

Most of the storylines this week were a continuation of what started to unfold last week: the Scavos had to ponder selling the restaurant; Bree continued spending big bucks; Susan continued to act like a child; and Gaby wanted money and went back to her old self to get it. The way the storylines unfolded was not that entertaining. However, each had a twist that could have major repercussions in the coming weeks.

The storyline that got the least air time this week was that of Dave and Edie. Yet, I think it was the most interesting because it showed us that Dave's revenge plan is now entering the last phase.

Let's quickly review each storyline and the impact they may have in the future.

The Scavos - It was a given that Tom would eventually accept that his dream was over and agree to sell the restaurant. What I didn't see coming was Lynette actually standing by her man for once, even if she didn't agree with him. Lately, Lynette showed us that she was ready to do rather extreme things to get her way, yet this week, she allowed her kids to work at the restaurant and even did her best to make it work. The Scavos will need to find new jobs if they want to make ends meet, even if they do make a few bucks with the sale of the restaurant. Will they try to go back to advertising? If so, will they still be able to fit in after years of not working in that field?

The Hodges and Andrew - One family who is definitely not suffering from the economic crisis is the Hodge family. Not only did Bree buy a new car last week and bought Andrew and his boyfriend a house, but she also gave him a huge raise! Andrew sure seems to be efficient and worth every penny -- quite a different Andrew than the one he was when the series began. I can, to an extent, understand why Orson feels cheated by Andrew making twice as much as he (Orson) makes. However, Orson doesn't seem to understand that he (Orson) recently joined the business and doesn't have much culinary background to grant a huge salary. Seems like Orson will steal away the money he thinks he deserves. He stole Andrew's Mont Blanc pen. What's next? That crystal bowl? Let's hope that family members find out about his stealing before the cops do. Otherwise, Orson may go back to jail!

Susan, Mike and Katherine - I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Susan needs to act her own age! I don't get that she accepts that Jackson spends time with MJ, yet doesn't accept that Katherine does. Okay, she is afraid MJ will like Katherine better and that he'll elect Katherine Mommy #1. But come on! She wasn't afraid that MJ would make Jackson Daddy #1, was she? What's good for her is not good for Mike?!? I can see more conflict coming up now that Mike and Katherine are moving in together, and I'm not sure I'll like it. The only way that Susan may accept Katherine is if Jackson comes back -- sadly, I don't think Gale Harold returned to the set as of yet since he was released from the hospital. One thing I would have liked to see this week, though, is Susan's first day as a teacher's assistant. That must not have gone too well!

The Solises - And we thought that Gaby would have remembered the lesson the seamstress taught her last week! Old Gaby quickly took over when Brad told the Solises that Carlos was getting a bonus after all! New Gaby would have probably done the right thing and told Maria ... This storyline cannot end well now that the Solises and Brad have been lying to Maria, especially since the Solises may become godparents!

Dave and Edie - First off, I need to ask why did Dave kept Doctor Heller's cellphone turned on when it was clear someone would call the doctor eventually? Secondly, are we to assume that the cellphone has been turned on all this time without recharging? In any case, we learned this week that Dave used Heller's cellphone to send text messages to Heller's secretary so she wouldn't report the doctor missing. I don't recall seeing Dave steal the cellphone from the doctor but I'm willing to accept that he may have done it offscreen somehow. Since the secretary is about to tell people that she doesn't know where the doctor is, Dave must push his plan forward. Is it possible that we'll see him attempt to kill/hurt Katherine and/or Susan and MJ before May Sweeps? My guess is that the camping trip will be canceled or Dave won't find the opportunity to shoot Katherine during the trip. That would put the final showdown around May Sweeps. In any case, I hope he doesn't succeed in killing Katherine. Maybe he can hurt Susan a tiny bit so she gets some serious time to think and grow up?

In case you didn't know, Desperate Housewives' next new episode is on March 8.

Persoanlly, i dont think Susan needs to grow up. Thats her baby! And her and Katherine were friends, and Katherine can be a witch sometimes. And shes not funny. Susan on the other hand is adorable. And funny. I think her and Mike need to get back together.

Daves story has been taking too long...i like it as much as the applewhite story..not very much.

Lynette and Tom...poor people. The only good kid they ever had was little Penny! Parker was ok i guess.. but we dont see him much.
Orson is like pethedic. And now hes a theif? I dont get where this is comming from...but ok.

Im glab Gaby is back to being glamorous. Shes my favorite. Shes soo funny. And she did do the right thing in the end, and Carlos' boss was being a jerk.

Over all, i think they need to speed things up. And thye need more drama. But with Edie leaving, and the upcommign kiss i think they are findind it! Yeah, this season has been a little slow, but i still love the show overall.

Has anyone noticed that Mike and Susan's kid is the spitting image of Dave? I noticed it last week and this week even more so. Is there any chance she had artificial insemination and Dave is trying to get his kid back since his wife and other kid died? This year is ok, but been kinda slow for me.

"Where is the blonde mom? Isn't she still pregnant, but out of town? Did she have an abortion? Where's her husband? What happened to that storyline?"

She told Lynette that she was never pregnant. Of course, I'm suspecting that she was lying about the lie, and I am preparing that she will resurface in a dun-dun-DUN! moment in the season finale with a newborn. Only because it seems weird that they would have introduced the pregnancy aspect if she wasn't pregnant at all, and then she leaves and never heard from again. I mean, what was the point then? To explain why Porter would try to run away with her and start a "new life" together? I think him believing he was in love with her and her having an abusive husband would be reason enough for the running away idea, right? I don't know...

Was anyone else kind of scared when Tom started shaking Porter/Preston (I forgot which one he was talking to)? Kind of disturbing, and unexpected from pansy-ass Tom.

Susan needs to grow the hell up. This is one of those TV situations where a character's problem is painfully obvious and all could be resolved if someone would just tell them what is clearly bothering them (that she is jealous that Mike found someone else) ... except, didn't Bree already do it several episodes ago? So Susan is just stupid then, because she's still acting out even though she's had her problem pointed out to her.

And yes, when did Dave get the doctor's phone? And it just occurred me--did Dr. Heller drive to the club? If he did, then his car would have still been there and someone must have spotted it.

I cannot stand when Susan acts like a shrew. She does it too often, and too well. She's embarrassing.

Orson acts like he's 9. I do not understand why Bree is still with him. What does he give her? He complements nothing in her; he's useless.

Porter and Preston are too obnoxious. I wish one of them had learned something this season. Where is the blonde mom? Isn't she still pregnant, but out of town? Did she have an abortion? Where's her husband? What happened to that storyline?

Dave is kind of boring...it took too long to get here. Dammit - Edie deserved to have a teeny bit of happiness on this show. Instead she gets this freak.

I like Katherine a lot and hate that Mike will probably drop her on her ass for Susan at some point in the future. Although I don't know why. They had a lot of drama, but little in the way of real love (at least to me as a viewer). Why go back to that? He and Katherine seem to have a great time together, in many ways.

tv junkie

you sum up all my feelings about this episode perfectly.

sometimes i feel like the writers secretly hate teri hatcher or something, otherwise how can they justify the way they wrote for their supposed leading lady of the show?

when i saw tom telling the waiters to pretend to enjoy dining at the pizza place, i thought, why aren't his spoiled kids doing the job? he's got so many scavos already...and then those brats totally outdid themselves. birth control, people!
i think the cougar mom's storyline was done when lynette paid her to leave.

as for orson, the needy loser, i'm still dreaming of the day when bree takes out her gun and shoot him dead.

Gale Harold got out of the hospital on October 31, 2008. He's been "completely healthy" according to Teri Hatcher, seen on many occasions out with friends and at films/plays. Also according to Hatcher (who must be desperate for something to happen in Susan's storyline), the writers need to put him back into the story. I am hoping that happens soon because he was a real bright light in this season's DH and they'd be making a big mistake if they didn't write him in soon.
