Grey's Anatomy: An Honest Mistake

Grey's: An Honest Mistake
(S05E16) "In Human please Doctor Yang." - Doctor Campbell

When I learned a few weeks back that Faye Dunaway was going to guest star this week, I was a tiny bit worried at what her role would be since Grey's Anatomy has not been very good lately at introducing new characters and Dunaway deserves better. Luckily for her, the role of Doctor Margaret Campbell was introduced with some humor and her presence helped Cristina become a better doctor while touching the topic of when doctors should retire.

Dunaway's performance as Doctor Campbell was solid; I totally bought her as a doctor who once was an OR God and who now must admit to herself that she isn't in her prime anymore and needs to retire.

What I enjoyed most about her storyline was her interaction with Yang. Campbell is right: Cristina is too set in her technological ways and needs to learn a few "dinosaur" tricks to become the best doctor possible. Cristina is at her best when pushed a little and that's what Campbell gave her, a push. Not only did it allow Cristina to learn what she could do when her gadgets can't be used, but it also allowed Cristina and Owen to grow a bit more as a couple since Campbell put them at odds.

Speaking of people on opposite sides, Derek and Addison continued their feud over medical procedures. I enjoyed the showdown between them last week but this week, it was getting old. I get it that Derek wanted to correct his mistakes at all cost but Addison was right about Jen's future as a woman and a mother. Was cutting her frontal lobe really a good option? Would she be able to live in this condition? Would they be able to save the baby? Derek was not seeing the big picture here since he was too focused on keeping Jen alive. It must not be easy for doctors to decide that they must let go of a patient. And I'm not surprised by Derek's reaction to let out his anger on Mark. The first punch he threw may have been because of Mark dating Lexie, but all the others were definitely out of anger to have lost a patient.

Congrats to LcsNJ for being the first a few weeks back to mention that Sadie more than likely mixed up the blood work and that Izzie must be the one with cancer. I was surprised though that Izzie decided to have the interns discover what she really has instead of asking Dr. Bailey or the Chief to check it out. Izzie said that the interns were not that good... I guess that Bailey's speech about Izzie & co. not being good doctors when they were interns helped Izzie decide to use her test results to teach the interns. However, going to Bailey or the Chief could have provided answers more quickly, no? Maybe Izzie doesn't want the Seattle Grace Powers That Be to know she is sick so not to be fired? Then again, Izzie did say she was sick of Seattle Grace... As you can see, it's not making sense to me even when I try to think it through. In any way, we now know for a fact that Izzie is not anemic and has something more serious.

I'm starting to like Arizona since she definitely is not like any other character. It's refreshing to see a character on GA who knows what she wants and who she is. Plus, I'm curious to see if ABC will let Grey's Anatomy have another lesbian love affair since they were quick to tank the Hahn/Callie one.

Oh, and George got a bit more screen time! However, his presence was not that useful to the episode... Seeing him get a few more seconds on screen every week looks like the show wanted to smooth things over, yet, prepare his exit. What do you think?

In case you didn't know, the next new episode of Grey's Anatomy is slated for March 12. In the meantime, ABC is said to air reruns of episode 5.08, "These Ties That Bind," and episode 4.13, "Piece of My Heart" the next two Thursdays.

Izzie wasn't relying on the interns to give her a diagnosis. The dermatologist already did that. She was using herself as a case from which they could learn. This was the first episode in a while that Izzie didn't annoy me. Loved the Derek/Mark fist fight. HOT

I kept staring at Faye Dunaway's nostrils and marvelling at just how much her face shows the work she's had done. Distraction, big time. Not quite as distracting as the preposterously bad face-off between Addison and Derek in the OR.

Actually Fay was on a short lived reality show " Make me a Super Star" or something like that on the CW or WB a few years back

so this is kind of a step up!

It's not like it's the first time she's guested on a TV show.

Yeah, she was outstanding in her short arc on Alias several years ago.

It's called age ism. Stars get older and they're not hired to be the main attraction so much as supporting roles. Yea, back in the day, stars wouldn't do tv. Now, it's not so uncommon. Remember Charlton Heston on the 'colby's.?" lol Faye was good last night, but I kept looking at her face and thinking, 'wow, u don't look ur age." lol

FYI I am shocked that a hospital that has doctors beating the crap out of each other...operating on each other...killing others for transplants for the patients they are in love with...having sex with everyone...giving STD to everyone...having races, proms, and the like in their halls...teaching their interns nothing...and has a boss that does nothing but move between scowling and crying with nothing in-between. OH except change her hairstyle...I am shocked that they only rank 12. I could go on but you get my sarcasm. This show has so jumped the shark.

Can they cram more incestuous sex (figuratively speaking) among their small group-doesn anyone have sex outside of these 10 people?, more story lines that consist of good husbands/crazy bitchy whiny wives-good kids that are dieing with single mothers-and cheating husbands in this show? Ugh.

Just venting about a show that used to be fantastic and now is just stupid.

I agree with everything you said. I'm actually surprise that with all the shananigans going on, the state department of health hasn't just come in and shut the hospital down.
Having said that, as ridiculous as the stories have been, this show was never intended to be taken seriously, like ER. It is more soapy that good drama. Because of its ridiculousness, I never actively root for any character. Remember not to let any character annoy you for too long and you might just enjoy it a bit more.

That's better (heh).

Seriously, though, she's an Oscar-winning actress who was one of the biggest movie stars on the planet in the Seventies and early Eighties. I don't begrudge her getting work, but a guest spot on even a popular drama is quite a long way to fall from where she was.

Yes, that is the legendary Faye Dunaway, and no - it's not such a stretch for acting legends to appear on TV shows these days. It's called "acting", and it's work. It's exposure to a massive audience of younger fans, and it's a smart thing for an actor to do. I hate that the TVSquad reviewer Isabelle Carrwau is taking cheap pot shots at an Oscar-winning legend like Faye Dunaway. Shame on you.

Scott, did you not read the part that said "Hey, folks, Joel here?" I wrote that note, not Isabelle. The post's under her name because her review will eventually go there. So if you're going to talk about "acting" to someone, talk to me, not Isabelle.

I haven't enjoyed Grey's in a long time. So to say I lilked this episode is a BIG COMPLIMENT to the show. I don't know what about the episode made it work for me, but I was riveted by most of the story lines.

I think the only "meh" thing was Faye Dunaway to be honest.
