Is ER going to kill off John Carter too?

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 20th 2009 11:33AM
Noah WyleOh, ER. Not again, not again.

If you watched last night's episode of ER, you saw the return of Dr. John Carter. His wife is visiting family in Paris, and he's back in Chicago to...well, we don't exactly know why he's back yet, but he's actually going to be working part-time at County General again. That's the only good news about what happened last night (I thought this was just going to be a quick visit by Wyle for a few episodes, I didn't realize he'd be working at the hospital again) because the ending probably made longtime ER fans sigh and/or grit their teeth.

The last scene showed Carter hooked up to...well, I'm not a doctor, but I'm assuming it's a dialysis machine or some sort of cancer treatment? He had a haunted look on his face, and he had a rather somber attitude throughout the entire episode. Scenes from episodes coming up showed Carter saying that he came back to Chicago specifically to talk to Dr. Banfield (?) and we also saw a scene of Carter dropping to the floor in the emergency room looking really, really bad.

Are they going to kill off Carter a la Mark Greene?

Why does ER often do this with characters, killing them off or giving them some disease or getting them off of the show in some other way that bums you out? I have a feeling that the people over at ER (and it's not just this show, it happens on many shows) think that a show can only be "real" or "gritty" or somehow more "important" if they have something dark happen to the characters. So they give Greene a brain tumor, have a helicopter drop on Romano, have Jeanie Boulet just leave the hospital without saying goodbye to anyone, they have Pratt die in an accident, and now they give Carter a disease.

If they do kill off Carter, this is a really sick, sick show. There's no reason why the show can't end this final season on an uplifting, positive note for longtime fans. We're the ones who are still watching the show. We don't need Carter to die for the show to come "full circle" in some misguided attempt at symbolism or higher meaning. It makes me worry about what they have in store for Clooney when he comes back. Is he divorced from Carol? Does he get the plague? I'm guessing it's both.

Yeah, it will be a shame if they kilL Carter, but after watching last night I think he is still in love with Abby. I thought this a while back when Pratt went to Africa and they spoke about her. What does anyone else think!

i thought they might kill him off as a reason to have ross, carol, benton, etc. return to chicago for his funeral.

I quit watching ER a few years ago when they killed off Mark Greene. But I am watching it this year as a sort of final tribute. I was upset also about the ending showing John Carter on a machine! I went back and did research...his brother died of leukemia before he was an intern at County General. I am thinking some sure of cancer as sometimes it runs in the family. I am happy to hear though that Doug and Carol are coming back. I just sent my college-aged son a message telling him as he is a huge George Clooney fan originating from the early ER days.

I have loved all ER's killing off of characters. I think it's a crutch to send them off to a farm to live. If someone is going to leave a show LEAVE THE SHOW. It''s nice to see Carter back, but yeah, let's kill him off before we go.

Just kidding... I loved Carter and was sad to see him ill, but I do think this is one of those things that has made this show so compelling for 15 years.

And Romano's death was the best bit of irony EVER on TV!!

Here's the thing.

Most people look to TV as a diversion from their own lives. There is too much death and destruction in real life all around us. They want something to be hopeful for, It's the modern day's fairy tales.

People Also like to see that their lives are better or nicer or somewhat superior than other peoples, that's why we have all these jerry springer and silly "reality" shows, They can feel superior.

ER was a decent show in it's heyday. But like all shows they evolve, for better or for worse. Actors move on, pass-away, have "creative" differences and etc... The easiest way to eliminate characters is to kill 'em off. Unless it's Dallas, there is no coming back from death.

There really has not been any truly original TV or movies since about 1990. Everything is either a remake, a spin-off or a *-ish new version. Substitute * for almost any 70's or 80's TV Show or Movie. Examples: Hill street blues, Cosby show, Quincy MD.

TV/Movie viewing popularity goes in cycles, The Hospital Shows, The Law Shows, The Sit Coms, The Police/Detective Shows, Sci-Fi are just some of the genres that are in for a while than out and then in again in a new re-incarnation. We have re-runs of old shows and Networks that pick up where others have left off. But by far The boob tube is really just that, it hypnotizes us into watching, and brainwashing us into buying things we don't want or need. (Yes that's really all TV is, Entertainment to split up the Advertisements. They just do it a little bit better now than in the days.)

So just as everything else must come to an end, So does ER. Some will miss, some are glad it's finally over, some indifferent. I just look forward to the day that we stop glorifying "Fame" and "Stardom", and start expanding our minds and learning.

It'll really make me (and my wife) upset if they decide to kill off Carter and bring everyone else (Dr. Benton, Clooney, etc.) back for their final time with the show for a funeral. Having followed ER for so many years, I think the writers are very good as cliff-hanger endings. They're almost to the point of being one of the only shows in my opinion to pull them off so well. Can't wait for next week's show!

Get well, John Carter!

Why I can't understand is why you don't let your favorite characters to face life?.

You always want a character to be happy, with no worries in the world and livin' la vida loca while working with no troubles whatsoever.

In my experience, I loved how Carter is now experiencing the other side of medicine. It was amazing how in the last scene he was looking at the wall with that look that says "even with all my knowledge I am here, waiting for this to keep on with my life".

I loved how to complete the Gelstat circle, now Carter has to face the ER as a potential patient.

He's once again a noob in that hospital, just this time is his own life he has to worry about.

I doubt they will kill him off. His kidney problems will lead to him reuniting with Dr Benton (Eric Lasalle) in an episode coming up. I thought the writers came up with a terrific storyline for Wyle's return. I loved the episode and thought the end of it was great.

I can't even explain how much I'd hate for them to kill Dr. Carter! I'm only 19 years old and I've been watching this show with my mom since before I can remember. And as I got older I watched every single rerun known to man! And I really do believe that if they kill Dr. Carter that would be a HUGE mistake. They should end the show on a good note so you're not sitting there wondering what the heck happened or wanting to rewrite it in your mind. So, yes, killing Dr. Carter is a big, gigantic mistake if they choose to go in that direction.

Sorry to comment so late, but wasn't that a methadone clinic? That was my first thought, considering his drug problem after the stabbing? Although I might be wrong.

The official recap on nbc.com says it's a dialysis machine. He's got some sort of kidney disease. Geez, I really hope they don't kill him off....
