Is Fallon already involved in the late night TV wars?

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 23rd 2009 3:03PM
ReegeHis new show doesn't premiere until next Monday, but Jimmy Fallon might already be entrenched in the late-night booking wars.

On Live with Regis and Kelly last Thursday, Regis Philbin announced that he was asked to be on Fallon's show the first week but that he had to turn it down because of a conflict. He regretted even saying that much, but before going on to something else he said that "I'm on another show and everybody is so sensitive about when you go on."

Reege is probably talking about Late Night Show with David Letterman. He's sort of a fixture over at that show (Letterman thinks Regis is one of the best broadcasters in TV history) and not only often has him on as a guest he often takes part in sketches and other segments.

This isn't the first time that certain shows were upset that guests go on competing shows. The late night booking wars have been going on for a while now. Both Fallon and Letterman do their shows from NYC so that's probably a big part of it too.

Letterman is on vacation this week and returns on Monday, the day Fallon's show debuts. Maybe if Letterman was off next week instead Regis could have gone on Fallon's show?

Regis isn't saying that he can't go on Fallon's show because he's doing Letterman *that week*. He's saying that he can't go on Fallon that week because he has a conflict with being a semi-regular on Letterman in general. (Though as Paul says he appeared on Conan many times and has done Kimmel too.)

Bob: Please explain how you get from this:

"I'm on another show and everybody is so sensitive about when you go on."

to this:

"He's saying that he can't go on Fallon that week because he has a conflict with being a semi-regular on Letterman in general."

Unlike your beloved Leno (who HID IN A FRIGGIN' CLOSET to land his NBC gig!), Letterman ain't that stupid.

Regis appeared on Conan's "Late Night" show many times over the years, so I don't see how it would all of a sudden pose a problem right now.

No, I didn't say there was a conflict on March 2, I just said that Reege said there was a conflict in general.

I'm reading what Regis said, and sounds to me like other people will get mad if he goes on other shows.

Which to me sounds like Letterman will get mad if he went on Fallon.

That's dumb, I find it hard to believe Letterman will PMSing. Just because Regis showd up on Fallon.

As far as I'm concerned Regis should able to go on any show he wants.

MJL: no idea why you bring up who Letterman's guests are on March 2.

Clearly because your post suggests there is a booking conflict on March 2. In fact, according to the late-night schedules I get, Regis isn't scheduled to be on either show next week. Please stick to blowing sunshine up Leno's ass and spare us your incorrect assumptions about Letterman.

Besides, it doesn't look like Jimmy is having any trouble scheduling A-listers:

Mo 3/2: Robert DeNiro, Van Morrison
Tu 3/3: Tina Fey, Jon Bon Jovi, Santigold
We 3/4: Cameron Diaz, Billy Crudup
Th 3/5: Donald Trump, Serena Williams, Ludacris
Fr 3/6: Drew Barrymore, Mario Batali

Jimmy is correct, and it doesn't matter anyways, because as an easy 15 seconds of research shows, Regis is not scheduled for Letterman during the entire week. Either way I can't believe something so insignificant warranted its own post.

It's the "Late Show with David Letterman." Not surprised by the mistake though.

Oh and Charles Barkley and Jason Segel are booked for Letterman's Monday 3/2 tapings, which a simple Google search shows.

Fixed it. It was an honest mistake, MJL. Jeez, it's not like Bob hasn't written about Letterman about a jillion times.
