Is Jack Bauer still relevant?

24 - Season 7 Cast
It's not you, Jack. It's me ... or maybe it's you. Hey, they brought it up by putting Jack in front of a Senate subcommittee in the first place for his methodology, and then partnering him with an FBI agent who's not comfortable with his aggressive tactics. It's just interesting to me as a long-time faithful that I find myself viewing Jack differently, too. Maybe it's because he skipped a year, but he just comes across as more extreme to me than in the past. But, as I said, it could be me. Maybe Jack is the picture of consistency and I've changed.

When Jack asks for something, if there's any resistance he immediately screams "Now!" or repeats the question in a roar. When Renee or anyone second guesses any of his suggestions he tells them that they're out of options and that they don't have time to do anything but his idea. Don't get me wrong, this season is one of the most exciting yet, but you have to wonder. Do we really need someone like Jack Bauer running around torturing people and sending innocent girls to their deaths to bring in the bad guy? Is it worth it?

When 24 started, it was two months after the September 11 attacks. We, as a nation, were pissed and we wanted answers. Jack gets answers. I think he was the perfect salve for what ailed us at the time. He went Guantanamo Bay on bad guys and we loved it. Terrorists weren't going to get away with any nonsense with Jack Bauer on the job. But I think we're in a different world in 2009.

Yes, the terrorists are still out there, but the attacks aren't nearly as raw. The nation has changed the party of power in Congress and the White House. We have new concerns and problems we're dealing with. Jack Bauer was the Patriot Act at a time when there wasn't time to wait for the proper channels and red tape to do things the right way. And he still is on television, but we're not so gung ho about it anymore in the real world. And it feels different watching him. And I'm just not sure why.

I actually get a little uncomfortable seeing him scream and yell at everyone, demanding they do things his way RIGHT NOW! I know he's usually right and he's a superhero and I get that. I really do. But it's just coming across a little douchey this year. Maybe it's Renee Walker being right there and every time he goes all Jack we get to see her react to it. Maybe it's residuals from the Subcommittee and what they said. And we have Moss absolutely appalled at his behavior, regardless of the sterling results.

The writers wouldn't be putting this stuff in there if they didn't want us to think about it. Maybe they're asking us if we still want our Jack Bauer the same way, or if we'd like him shaken up a bit. Personally, I can't imagine him any other way. Can you picture Jack taking the time to explain to the paramedic why he needed them to cut into Dubaku's abdomen? Of course not, that might take an extra four or five seconds. Better to yell and pull a gun on the guy.

I really need to go back and peruse my old DVDs to see if Jack has always been quite this extreme. Are they ratcheting him up a bit to make us think about his methods versus working within the system, as represented by Renee (at first) and Moss? The ratings are strong so it doesn't seem like we mind Jack being Jack much at all if you go by the numbers.

Jack will always do what needs to be done in the most expedient manner possible. Death and destruction will follow in his wake, along with bruised egos and ringing ear drums. It's just the way he is. But is that the Jack Bauer America wants and needs still? Or could we even handle a different Jack? Or maybe it's just me.

"The wounds are not as raw."

Why don't you ask one of the relatives of the victims of 9/11 if THEIR wounds are as raw. Most of America has forgotten what happened when Islam-O-Fascists slit the throats of passengers and crew members and used airplanes as weapons.

It is best summed up in Darryl Worley's song:

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

I have always liked 24, and the action that Jack brings to the screen. Is this all fantasy, could be. Is there an opportunity for this scenario happening some time in the future, let's hope not. Remember when the "food" chain was interrupted for many pet owners in this country? Who can say with all honesty that this was a mistake, an error, a complete accident? Or was it a test run for something much more disasterous? See how reallity can immitate fiction, and fiction can immitate reallity. The mind and our imaginations are such a powerful source to have fun with. Enjoy

WHAT???

One of the bestshows on the air and now more relavent then ever. Now we have heads of state not talk about terrorist or real bad guys.

Todays bad guys are banks forced to take bad loans from those that can't afford what they are buying...cause everyone...even if you arn't an american has a right to increase their debt.

So we NEED jack to keep fighting the real bad guys.

Jack is Jack. He gets things done when no one else has the courage or guts to act. The problem with this season is the lack of credible villains. It goes beyond all probability that there is one little "device" that, if it falls into the wrong hands, can override all safety protocols in so many ways. It can bring down airliners! It can cause factories to explode! Please! We can put aside our common sense only for so long.

And could someone explain why everyone whispers so much on this show? Talk about torture. Listening to Tony speak makes me want to confess to anything to just make it stop!

Jimmy says "To not ask 'Is Jack Bauer still relevant' once in a while is like not checking your oil or not refreshing your cnn.com page and staying off-line."

Not really. I haven't asked "Is Jack relevant?" in 6 seasons and nothing's happened yet. If I don't check my oil occasionally, I'll eventually have car trouble. My life runs quite well without cnn (or as we used to call it when we lived in Atlanta, Commie News Network; we called TBS Ted's Bull S...). 24 is a TV show and Jack is a character on that show. I watch it for entertainment, although I often wish we had a Jack Bauer instead of the well-known covert CIA operative, Valerie Plame (whose top secret name was Valerie Plame) and her wimpy husband Joe Wilson, or that Sandy Berger had run into Jack when he was leaving the National Archives after stuffing his pants with classified documents, or that Jack was in charge of tracking down the 9/11 terrorists, etc. A girl can dream, can't she? As for waterboarding, playing loud music, putting terrorists in shackles...why don't we ask the innocent victims of terrorists what they think? Oh, wait, we can't because they were beheaded, blown up, butchered...

I'd like to think there are people like Jack out there right now keeping our country safe. Maybe they don't go to the extremes that Jack does at time, but I'm sure it gets close from time to time. Men and women in the armed forces, CIA, FBI, NSA, etc. We owe our lives to them for protecting us and our country and Jack is the best reflection we get of what they might actually be going through.

I was JUST thinking this same exact thing last night. With 911 fading a bit into memory, the Iraq war taking a backseat to the economy and octo-mom, and Gunatonamo Bat being closed, what is "24"'s place on the TV landscape?

I love political intrigue and spy movies. I'm a sucker for them. I own all the James Bond movies (even "Moonraker") and go tho the theater to watch a movies any time the president's life is in danger in the trailer.

I've been a huge fan of "24" since day one, and I'm finding myself a little bored by this season. The reason is because the United States in "24" has been through quite a bit, yet it seems like nothing has really changed. Nobody is complaining about the frequency of terrorist attacks in the U.S., the law enforcement agencies haven't learned a thing in 8 years, and Jack is now just a cliche.

I've started catching up with the BBC show "MI-5" and am blown away by how good it is. When it deals with terrorists, they're good old fashioned ones that just wanna blow stuff up, not leaders of countries or elements in the US government. Terror by groups with wild ideologies that seem to come out of the woodwork is much more frightening than people who want to see a change in the American government, at least in a show about an agent beating up bad guys. The other might work in a show that takes place completely in the White House or in the Secret Service.

"24" isn't irrelevent merely because of Jack's methods, but because the stories they're telling are too convoluted to be believed. The stories also aren't as relevant as they once were in the days after 911. "24" needs to look back at its first season when terror elements popped out of the woodwork and the threat grew throughout the season.

It is a different world from 8 years ago and "24" needs to change with it.

I think that the reason Jack Bauer is short with so many people is because after saving the US from so many country ending disasters that he probably just thinks people get in the way. He's seen to many people die or get away because someone wouldn't do what he needed fast enough, or debated the morality of the situation longer then was allowed.

Also, you have to remember that Jack Bauer is not in OUR US, but one that has had 2 nuclear weapons detonated on American soil, dozens of suitcase bombs and intentional plane crashes. He's more relevant in that country then in ours. I would actually think that after all of those catastrophes, there would actually be many more agents like Jack.

I think the thing with Jack Bauer is that we want government agencies run by Renees but deep down we know we want a Jack Bauer available without having to actually acknowledge it. Although usually it is military doing this type of activity and not FBI.

But for me, Jack just looks beat down this season. And I think that is important. These guys who have to do this type of thing (and it is necessary at times) pay a great price for it. Jack is paying that price.

In effect, we sacraficed and tortured Jack Bauer just like he does to everyone else.

And this question is completely relevant. Yes, it is a fictional tv show, but that doesn't mean we can't use it (like literature) to spur discussion.
