Battlestar Galactica: Someone to Watch Over Me

by Brad Trechak, posted Feb 28th 2009 4:02AM
Battlestar Galactica(S04E17) Before I go all spoilery on tonight's episode, what was the tattoo on Starbuck's back? It looked like a temple of some sort. Was it the Temple of Five?

Tonight's episode had its share of "what the frak" moments. It had some revelations, but it created more mystery than it solved. I was a little annoyed at the tease of learning the secret behind Starbuck's resurrection that ultimately didn't happen.

It's official. Boomer is a manipulative, evil bitch. Bad enough that she tricked poor, vulnerable Tyrol (who has lost both his wife and son this season) into releasing her, but she also manipulated Helo into cheating on his wife with her while her fellow model Eight, Athena, was watching. Then, to win the Ultra Mega Bitch Gold Medal, she kidnaps Athena's child. If you didn't hate Boomer before, you do now.

While Boomer was sexing it up with Helo, did anybody notice the creaking sounds of the ship? It was a great metaphor comparing the dissolution of the crew's cohesion with the similar situation of the Galactica's hull (shown with greater effect near the episode's end).

Tyrol is probably feeling like crap right now. The only comfort I can give is that when Athena and Helo find out, he'll feel worse. You'd think he'd be a little suspicious and ask "what's in the crate," but love makes you do some crazy things.

The Cylons now likely have Hera. This means that the only thing protecting the fleet from an all-out human-hating attack by the Cavil-led Cylons is gone. Oh, and only Battlestar in the fleet is falling apart.

A model Six has now become the Cylon equivalent of Harvey Milk by being the first publicly-elected out-of-the-closet Cylon in the history of the 12 colonies. And we know what happened to him.

As mentioned before, I felt kind of cheated that we didn't learn more about the mystery of Starbuck's resurrection. We did, however, learn the secret of her issues with men and why she treats any man that loves her like crap (*cough*Apollo*cough*). It's always about Daddy, isn't it? I knew once Hera gave her that paper that it meant something. At least we now know the "stars" were a Cylon mating call or some equivalent. I'm surprised it wasn't the sheet music for "All Along the Watchtower."

Tonight's episode seemed to revolve around the theme of loss. Starbuck's loss of hope (hence her redundant life), the ship's loss of structure, and the fleet's loss of protection from the Cylons.

This episode still leaves all too many questions unanswered, particularly with only three episodes left. What is Starbuck? She has memories of a childhood, but are they real or were they fake like Cylon projection? Also, since this Cylon projection thing is possible, wouldn't that explain the connection between Baltar and Six? So, who's the Cylon here? Are both Baltar and Starbuck? Are neither?

All I can say is that it's keeping me tuned in. Expectations are sky-high for this series. I wonder if any climax will satisfy the masterful story Ron Moore and company have built. One can hope.

Could Kara's "piano" story be Ander's projection to help her learn about herself? Didn't she ask him "what about me, the same way she asked the piano man? We saw Ander's brainwaves do something, and he said he wrote the song or at least played it on earth.

A few small observations:
-Kara's fathers recording was made "Live at the Helice Opera House." Is this the same opera house from the visions? Probably. So Kara's father is part of the overall story. If Kara's dad is the 13th model maybe Kara is a skin job.
-Kara seems to have a "head dad" the same way Baltar has a "head six."
This ability seems to be more than ordinary cylon projection since real information is transfered. So does that mean that there is some unexplained link between Kara and Baltar?
Could that link be that when Cavel blocked the memories of the final five he failed to do that with the Danial model? Then the Danial model created both Kara and Baltar as skin jobs with programing that would kick in when the time was right? A bit of a stretch I know.
-At the end of the show Tyrol could access Boomers projection. How could he access her projection without Boomer around. Is this a new ability for him? And if it is why couldn't he populate his projection with a boomer and a six year olsd daughter?

Anyone notice what Athena said as Cottle was banishing them from Anders' bedside? "What if we hooked him up to the stream like we do with the Hybrids?" Think that was a bit of foreshadowing?

Kind of like last week when someone in the bar made a point to say, "Since when do we have a piano?" Think they were trying to establish something so we would be more accepting of it when it gets reintroduced in coming weeks?

These are just little examples, but I think it rings loud and clear for what it is--sloppy writing. Weak. I felt the same way when Boomer said. "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you'd be ok with Cylon projection." Is it just me? Or does that stuff feel cheap to anybody else out there?

Anders is in a coma? Ellen Tigh is telling the other cylons to give Saul some space because he just lost a baby? (Seriously--one of the most unevenly written characters of Season 4.5) Tyrol sneaks in Boomer's replacement during a blackout, to no one else's knowledge? Kara resolves her Daddy issues with Daddy's ghost? Come on!!! Is this General Hospital or Battlestar Galactica?

These last two weeks have been brutal, though I'll give credit: this week was not near as bad as last week. But next week is about the ship? I mean we all love Galactica, but they've just blown two episodes out the airlock, and then they are going to pine for the fate of the ship? Is it the people we love on this show, or is it the set pieces?

Clearly, with all the writing, the are setting this show up for a resolution that will by all accounts be unbelieveable, and normally unacceptable to most viewers, but it will be explained away as something miraculous--one true god, ship of lights, messiah baby Hera--I can't say what it will be. But just you watch! They are setting us up for sure on this one!

P.S. Daddy wasn't really there, so it means it was all in Starbuck's head, which means she received the signal that the other's recognized, which makes her some kind of cylon--unless the entirety of the tune she played (all along the watchtower) can be attributed to Hera's drawings. (Which was telegraphed BTW--did anyone notice that set up coming a mile away? When Hera was drawing stars in a circle, and then she hands Starbuck the sheet with all the scribblings in a straight line? At that exact moment those drawings were going to be notes. You know why? Because its derivative. Its unoriginal. Way to go, writers! Question: If Hera gave her the perfect notes, what was all that other crap she was scribbling?)

The reviewer, Brad, is an embarrassment. He should try watching the episodes for once. For example: It was established at the top of the episode that Raptor pilots going on long duration planet hunting missions take big crates of food with them. So, when Hera was hidden in the box no one considered it strange.

Uh, Brad, the song was All Along The Watchtower, or at least Bear McCreary's version of it. That was the whole point, dude.

I might also suggest you study writing. You're fine at typing. But, take a writing course somewhere. Study great critics like Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, David Denby and the like. You'll never achieve that level of course, but you at least ought to have an understanding of what good review writing looks like.

No one here seems to have figured it out, but the obvious seldom occurs to people: Boomer asked Tyrol to come along with her. Why? Because then Cavil would then have one of the 5 back.

His intention is to ransom Hera for the 5. He wants the 5 to surrender to him and rebuild resurrection tech. If they do, he'll give back Hera. (Or at least he will say that is his intention.)

Kidnapping and ransom go hand in hand.

BSG is winding down, but MRTC is gearing up!

It's the one web series you can't frakking miss.

Three roommates. One's a Cylon. You do the math.

Daniel is Galactica. What Cavil did to him was turn him into the most mindless machine out there, to teach him a lesson for being such an 'artist'. Tigh said the music was coming from the ship walls in the season 3 finale. Now that the Cylons are putting their organic stuff into the 'bones' of the ship, Daniel is reawakening even more, leading his daughter Starbuck to the song he was giving out to the Final Four. They said 'Daniel' wouldn't play an important role, but Galactica will.

Daniel said he'd been working on the composition for 4 days, and it's been hell. This was the 4th episode since the mutiny and the discovery of the ship fractures. The creaking ship represents the frustration he has in not getting the composition done.

Was Starbuck's piano tutor in the bar supposed to be a vision of her father? Or of someone else? He was playing along side her then disappeared when the other cylons heard her playing and approached. If so was this delusion of the "Head Six" variety or of the dead cat variety?

It's not like we can question Helo's love for Athena. The very existence of Hera is proof enough of that.

Helo lived with Athena for years after her last download and would have picked up on the small differences that made her unique from all the other eights. He would have to because he comes into contact with hundreds of eights every day.
The chief knew Boomer because she was the woman he loved, not because of any cylon ability.

But Helo would only have noticed those small differences if he had spent time with Boomer. From Moore's podcast, it was because the lighting was bad, Helo wanted to have sex with his wife before she went on a six-day mission, and Helo doesn't have to be perfect anyway.

We also learn that Tyrol recognizing Boomer is a Cylon ability. Remember, he spent several seconds looking right into her eyes, which was longer than Athena took.

Twins haven't downloaded and possibly accessed the other twin's memories, etc... the 8's can, and Boomer probably has.

We know for a fact boomer downloaded Athena's memories. She told Helo she did so in "Hub."
