Lost is a lot like ... Get Smart?!

Get SmartI have to admit, this is one comparison I hadn't thought of before.

The L.A. Times makes an interesting comparison of Lost and Get Smart. How could they possibly be related? No, there isn't anyone called "Chief" (though Sawyer must have called someone that by now), there is no KAOS, and no one has spoken into a shoe phone, but both shows do feature...a moving island!

Yup, in fourth season episode of Get Smart that aired in 1968, "Schwartz's Island," Agents 86 and 99 are on their honeymoon and get stranded on a fake island run by KAOS that is moved with the help of a giant electromagnet!

Of course, this doesn't mean that the show is copying Get Smart (Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof don't remember that episode), but it is fun to see what other TV shows in the past have had similar plots/mysteries/scenes that mirror today's shows. Lost was once compared to this show too, but the creators say they never even knew that show existed.

We'll have to see if the numbers "86" and "99" will ever mean anything of significance on Lost, or there's a secret passageway via phone booth on the island.

Max: Cheif! It's Max. Would you believe that I'm stuck on an island with a giant Egyptian statue, mysterious hatches and smoke monsters?

Cheif: No Max. I don't believe a word of that.

Max: Would you beleive that I'm stuck on an island with jungle polar bears, crazy flashes of light, exploding submarines and a frozen donkey wheel?

Cheif: No Max. I don't beleive that either.

Max: Coconuts and sand in my shorts?

That was a classic episode of Get Smart! One of the funniest moments in the whole series was in that episode: a pair of Navy officials (I think) playing a game of "poker" with their fleet deployments. Gotta love it.

Yup, LOST has parallels with a lot of older pop culture.

I was recently informed that there are a LOT of parallels b/t Lost and Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Which is interesting because on wikipedia this is listed:

IGN Movies has reported that a film adaptation is in the works; whether it is for a movie or a television series is unknown. J. J. Abrams, who has been behind shows such as Lost and Alias, is supposedly attached to produce and direct. Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, also affiliated with Lost and J. J. Abrams, have optioned the Dark Tower series from King for a reported nineteen dollars, which of course, is the infamous number from the Dark Tower series of novels. According to issue #923 of Entertainment Weekly, King "is an ardent supporter of the desert-island show and trusts Abrams to translate his vision" into a film franchise with Lindelof being "the leading candidate to write the screenplay for the first installment."

So that leaves me to ponder is the island somehow actually in the Dark Tower?
