Stacey Oristano chats about Friday Night Lights
So, is Friday Night Lights coming back for one more season? Stacey Oristano, who plays Tyra Collette's delightfully trashy but good-hearted sister Mindy, was nice enough to talk to TV Squad and give us a little bit of dirt on the show. I talked to Stacey while she was out in LA (her first time there, she said) and asked her what all FNL fans really want to know. After the jump, Stacey talks about her hopes for another season, the backstage antics of the cast, and why Taylor Kitsch can't keep his pants on.
TVS: Has there been any word on a possible fourth season?
Stacey: We haven't heard one way or the other, but, you know, that's not a definite 'no' or a definite 'yes'. It could still work out for us.
TVS: So what has it been like playing Mindy for the past three years?
Stacey: Mindy definitely has her own idea of taste. She's a good-hearted person, and she's genuinely happy in Dillon. It's funny, because I had this conversation with Dana [who plays Tyra's mom] about how, as supporting characters, our whole job is to be exactly what Tyra doesn't want to be.
TVS: You guys have a very unique style of filming. Are there any challenges or drawbacks to that?
Stacey: [Laughs] It's been great. I think that the only challenge will be when I am on a more traditional show, and have to learn blocking and all that stuff. Our process has very little rehearsal and a lot of improv. They give you a lot of freedom. It hasn't been a challenge to work like this, but I think that whatever I do going forward ... it will be a hard adjustment since we're given so much freedom right now.
TVS: What has it been like working with Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton and the rest of the cast?
Stacey: Everyone is just so wonderful. I haven't had too many scenes with them, but I've learned so much from just watching them. I've gone on set to just watch scenes I'm not even in. I've learned an incredible amount from just watching how they interact with each other and play a scene. But the entire cast is so supportive. You can just try anything and not feel out of line.
TVS: Are there any funny backstage stories you can share?
Stacey: You know, I don't think we've done a blooper reel on the DVD, but if we did, it would be me and Taylor Kitsch just cracking up the whole time. We can't seem to get through a scene without totally losing it. The cast is just fun to be around, and we have a great time.
TVS: Is it hard to keep your composure during these funny scenes? There was a scene a few weeks back when you're hanging out in the Riggins house that looked hilarious.
Stacey: That scene was fun.We are all in the Riggins' house, where Tim comes in and kinda just takes off his pants in the kitchen. That actually wasn't in the script! But he just decided to play it that way, and we were all like ... uh ... [makes a surprised but pleased noise], and it worked really well, so they left it in. It can be very funny sometimes.
TVS: What's next for Mindy and Billy?
Stacey: Well, I don't know what really happens for them next, but it wouldn't be enough to carry a whole show. [Laughs] I'm hoping the writers can think up great new story lines, with all the kids graduating. We have such great writers who are so creative, I'm sure they will think of something. It's been such a great experience, I would just love for it to continue.
