American Idol: 3 more to the top 12, and the wild card round begins

American Idol - Wild Card Round BeginsThis episode went along pretty much as I expected, with most of the people I expected getting through to the top 12. Until the wild card round, that is, when the kids and I were screaming at the TV because of the judges' dismal ineptitude at picking people to come back! But first, let's see what happened up to that point. That's my version of "After the break..."

The show started with the group singing Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold," which was one of my favorite songs until I heard them sing it. But even with the awkward dance moves, they seemed to be having fun, especially Nate, so that's what matters, I guess.

I thought most of them did a good job last night, but I was really blown away by Lil Rounds. Really, just give her the Idol crown right now. I can't imagine that she won't go far in the competition, though she reminds me of LaToya London from a few seasons ago, and she didn't get as far as I had hoped. So we'll see what happens with Lil.

And Lil is first up, so I don't have to wait long to learn she's going through to the top 12. I would have fallen off my chair if she didn't make it. Kara said she expects to hear "just ridiculous vocals" from her every week. The pressure is on!

Arianna Afsar, Alex Wagner-Trugman, Taylor Vaifanua, Kendall Beard, and Scott Macintyre are up next. Only one of them is going through, and I guess right off the bat it'll be Scott. Sure enough, Scott's the man, and the one going through to the top 12. He gets a standing ovation and says he'll never take the competition for granted. Randy says he can't wait to see him play the piano and "blow up the stage every time, Dawg."

Nathaniel Marshall and Kristen McNamara, and then Von Smith and Felicia Barton are up next. With both pairs, Ryan says that after the nationwide vote, "It's a no right now." Hmmm, "right now"...?

Ju'Not Joyner and Jorge Nunez are up next, and this is a tough one, because both of them were really great singers. If I was queen of the world, I probably would have put Ju'Not through, because I think he's the better singer out of the two. But I think America got hooked on Jorge's emotional backstory and voted him through.

Next, the Wild Card Round officially begins. Simon explains that the judges have chosen eight people they want to come back and sing again tomorrow night. Also that Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson were both Wild Card Round winners, so anything can happen.

Each of the judges announces the various winners of the Wild Card Round. When all is said and done, the people coming back are: Von Smith, Jasmine Murray, Ricky Braddy, Megan Joy Corkrey, Matt Giraud, Jesse Langseth, Anoop Desai, and ... Tatiana Del Toro...? What?!!!! This is the part where the kids and I were screaming at the TV, "Noooooooooo!!!" I mean, she has an ok voice, but really, judges?! Really?!! What about my man, Ju'Not? He surely deserved it more than Crying Girl!!!

Argh, that's all I've got to say about tonight's episode, because I've run out of exclamation marks. So there are still three slots open ...

Of the Wild Card hopefuls, who do you think will get through?
Von Smith50 (5.1%)
Jasmine Murray63 (6.4%)
Ricky Braddy71 (7.2%)
Megan Corkrey128 (13.0%)
Matt Giraud110 (11.2%)
Jesse Langseth40 (4.1%)
Anoop Desai475 (48.2%)
Tatiana Del Toro49 (5.0%)

This year's idol sucks. No real stand out up to now. All sounds mediocre and that fourth judge thing is ridiculous. Paula is right on point this season even better than Kara. What p*ssed me off was their decision to put through no talented people like Norman and Tatiana just for the shock value while wasting other people's talent - most of whom was sent home. Won't be watching this year.

This year's Idol is the pitts, this coming from soneone who watched and enjoyed since its inception. The real talents this season got away and in its place you have jokers and untalented people like Normal Gentle - such a joke and waste of other people's time and talent and bipolar Tatiana. Sad but won't be watching this year.

Gotta agree with all the folks who wanted Ju'not in the Final 12 and were surprised when he didnt make it. His vocals were very good and he had that smooth vibe that others have already noted. I would have found it interesting to see what he would do each week as the contest moved forward. Really, there are a lot of nameless and faceless people in the Final 12, especially among the women. Partly cause few of them have stood out and partly cause, with 36 finalist to start with, there were just too many people to keep up with. Some got very little airtime or attention, so they had little time to make an impression.
And yes, the Crazy Train, Tatiana, has returned to the station. Truthfully, I dont know if she is an actual lunatic or if she is putting us all on to get attention, and I dont much care. To me, her vocals were good enought to earn her a spot in the Final !2, especially when you consider how average some of the others are. Does she deserve to be there at the expense of Ju'not or even several of the others who were not chosen, but had relatively good performances? In Ju'nots' case, definitely not, for some of the others, I guess it's a matter of taste.

I was VERY disappointed when Ju 'not was NOT picked for the wild card. Are they crazy???? I know it's to each their own but c'mon...this guy has a great voice and he's very smooth. Too bad....it would've been nice hearing him sing every week.

My favorites from the third group were Lil Rounds, Von and Junot. I was surprised Junot was not one of the 8. I hope Von makes it. I think Simon loves Anoopdog Millionaire so he gets in. I think they also pick Tatiana because she will be this season's Sanjaya and since there's only 3 women in the group of 9, I suspect a total of 2 women will be picked tonight.

I am in agreement with the judges on all their picks, except Tatiana. "Dear God No! No! No! " my daughter and I both shouted, when they said her name..like a bad dream you're having again... Her drama queen ways, and arrogance are painful, and disturbing to watch! Peurto Ricans, and latins are emotional people, I know, but, she's way over the top....

Man, some TERRIBLE picks. First of all, I have to say, with no meanness intended, that many of America's voted picks are so boring. Kris Allen? Michael Sarver? Jorge? Yawn. On the other end of the spectrum, we have Gorkey, Lambert, MacIntyre, and Rounds being spoon-fed to us by the producers and judges as the next incarnation of supreme awesomeness. And I resent that kind of pimping. They each have good voices (Scott less so than the other three), but the interference makes me less excited about any of them in the competition.

That said, I agree with lots of the other comments here; Tatiana was no surprise (bring on the drama!), but definitely a disappointment when KRISTIN MCNAMARA is standing right there. A real voice. Did they really have to give her one last punch in the gut by picking Tatiana over her? Or Von? Or Jasmine Murray? Sheesh. I'm also disappointed about no Mishavonna or Ju'not. Mish can really sing (much more "package" than Jasmine, imo), while Ju'not was the only singer with some creativity, who made the Delilah song his own. That said, I love Anoop and will be routing madly for him (even though he looked peeved last night).

I'm hoping the singer perform and the judges each pick one, leaving us with a Top 13.

Tatiana? Gotta be a producer pick. She's a blooming idiot.

Do we actually know that these are the only 8 in the Wild Card? It seems like it'd make more sense to pick 4 from each of the three rounds, make it 12, and the Judges just wanted a chance to talk about the current round after seeing who was through. It wouldn't surprise me to see them bring back four more at the start of tonight's show, and I'd be shocked if Ju'Not isn't one of them.

Doesn't make sense for this not to be true, since group 3 didn't seem particularly weaker than the first two. Why wouldn't they play by the same rules?

I am surprised, if I'm right, that Ryan didn't tell us this, though.

The competition this year is aw-ful.Face it,who wants to tell a blind guy he's just OK but not good enough for a record contract? He's getting the pity vote. Did anyone think he was NOT going on further last night? NO! Granted some of them are GOOD,but no one has stepped it up,we'll see.
