Do you have Heroes fatigue, too?

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 8th 2009 2:16PM
heroesAs Bob wrote the other day, NBC has assured fans that Heroes will be back next season. Isn't that great? Well, no, not to me. I would like to assure NBC that I have had it with Heroes. I'm exhausted and fed up. Do you feel like me? Do you have Heroes fatigue?

The changes have been detrimental to the original premise, ruining what was once the most exciting new TV show on the air since Lost. Quite simply, I don't like the new "book"; I don't like the characters that have been mangled beyond recognition; I don't like all the story lines that were dropped in favor of this new paradigm that has the government hunting down Matt and Peter and the other familiar heroes and treating them like terrorists. At the end of the last episode, I just felt bad about Heroes. What have they done to my show?

How could creator Tim Kring have blown it so dramatically? The plots don't make sense and don't connect logically to what came before. And unlike Lost, I'm no longer fascinated by the puzzle.

So, could I be suffering from Heroes fatigue? Is there a cure? I highly doubt it. Without being "punny," Heroes has lost its way. The joy of the beginning, when Peter was grappling with his feelings that he had some power, when Hiro squeezed his eyes and stopped the clock, Claire plunging 40 feet to the ground and being able to walk away from it without injury, was amazing. The entire first season -- "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" -- worked. Since then, though, Heroes has floundered around in an attempt to reinvent the world it created.

I don't want to hear about why anymore because the end result is what you see on the screen. Since saving New York from a nuclear disaster, Heroes hasn't been the same. Characters have been added with new powers (the girl with the black tears), while others have been dropped completely (what did happen to Nathan's wife and children?). What kind of continuity is this?

I'm sorry, but I feel betrayed. And, yes, I'm fatigued. I don't have the energy or interest to stick with Heroes anymore. NBC is talking about18-20 episodes for next season. Those will be 18-20 hours that I won't be watching. Maybe I'll just buy the DVD set from season one.

P.S. If you don't feel like I do, take a look at what's in store for Season Four.

I'm honestly not saying this to pile on -- because I think whoever likes a particular television program is certainly entitled to enjoy it -- but I really think it's funny whenever I hear people complaining about "Heroes" and how "bad" it's become because it was never worth a damn to begin with. It was a terrible show from season one, episode one, with some of the worst writing and acting ever seen in an ongoing TV series (Milo V., king of the one facial expression, couldn't act if you stuck a gun to his head and told him his life depended on it). And as far as sci-fi series go, it doesn't even belong in the same sentence as classics like "The X-Files" or "Buffy," let alone exists in the same league. So now that everyone's so surprised to see "Heroes" go off the rails, I just find it so hilarious because it was never on the rails to begin with.

I think Heroes is actually very good. Season 2 was the worst but I will still watch Heroes as I have for the last 2 years. But, everyone's entitled to their opinion.

I still find Heroes entertaining, but it could be so much better. I'm tired of the complaints too. Everyone keeps complaining, and Tim Kring keeps re-tooling, in turn he's making a bigger mess in order to "fix" the show (abrupt conclusion to story lines, introducing new characters only to be killed off quickly or forgotten, ret-conning, recycling plots, keeping popular characters too long, etc) All these "fixes" is what made the show a mess it is now.

This is what you get when you run a TV show solely on focus groups. Tim Kring keeps pandering to the base, it's ridiculous. (Maybe NBC is meddling, since they really need a hit show, and it seems they don't want it to fail)

Tim Kring, dude, don't cave in to NBC and the haters, stick to your own creative vision. I'm not saying to ignore all fan complaints and suggestions, (or live in your own dream world like George Lucas) but don't incorporate all of them either, regardless of how dumb they are. Listening to the fans is like letting inmates run the asylum. Do you remember that episode of the Simpsons, where Herb Powell gets Homer to design a car, since he is the average ordinary Joe six pack, and should know what the average ordinary Joe six-pack would want in a car? Well, how did that turn out? (It was a disaster in case you didn't see that episode).

Everyone else: Let Tim Kring sort out everything and stick to his plan for the rest of the season, and see how it goes. Give him one more chance. If Heroes still sucks, then fans, unleash your hatred, burn your Heroes DVDs and merchandise, etc. Take to the streets, write your congressman, delete all references to Heroes from Wikipedia; Think of the children: rid the world of the horribleness that is Heroes! The war on Heroes must begin!

I'd be less upset if they hadn't of canceled 4400, which was a show with a similar premise but a better execution in the long-run that was only getting better as it went along.

Well if people read my past history on Heroes they know I love Heroes but am bored with it. For the last few episodes I will be watching Heroes and get up and not wait for a commercial because the show to me is going Nowhere and to me it is said.

I think the Fugitives story line could have been good but it is not any were people would like it to be.

I can't even stand any of the people on the show other then HRG and Sylar. Even this year they are making HRG not that good at all. So it falls on the Hunter who could be a great character and even better then HRG but we are getting none of that.

I so think NBC should go back and look at Tim's idea for season 2 which was to have all new characters and make that for season 4 instead this way if NBC does not want to kill of Claire or give Peter his powers back they don't have to because they are not part of the show any more.

They could be background characters you hear about them but nothing more.

I don't get all the hatred, I still look forward to this show every week (it's not the best, but it never was, it was just entertaining) and have fun thinking about it after it's over. It's the closest thing we have to a Live-Action comic book on TV without it being too campy. Sure, there are plot holes, but there are plot holes in every scripted show, even The Sopranos (what happened to the Russian that Paulie and Chris lost in Pine Barrens?), so why not just take it with a grain of salt and enjoy it for what it is? It's either this, or more crap like that moronic "reality" that is taking over every cable channel. Would you rather have another lame "Superstars of Dance" or a cool show about superheroes?

You clearly only liked it for the discovery of the powers, not for the powers or the stories themselves. You even said that in your review, so you clearly didn't approach the show with the right attitude. Once the mystery of the powers was gone and the characters became more comfortable with their powers, you lost interest, like most of the other non-sci-fi/comic types who watched season 1.

How can you not dig Sylar and his journey to discover the truth? How can you not like the fact that Parkman and Petrelli are finally becoming useful and more intelligent? I LOVE this season and I liked the last two as well. Maybe it's not the show that has "lost its way" but you viewers who realized that you don't like Comic books and super heroes once they are into the main story.

I've been so disappointed in this show for several seasons. It's got so much promise I keep watching despite not having any interest in the show anymore. I mean really, what is the point of Hiro's character other than to annoy us? For that matter, every character annoys me. They do the stupidest things over and over again. I think the only character who acted in a way I would expect was future Peter but unfortunately he got killed off.

No, I dont have Heroes fatigue, Just like how i can read a big giant book and finish it, even though some parts seem longer and I might have to go back and reread them, I can understand the big picture and am mature enough to have patience for the process.
