Fred Armisen is The Spoiler Alert Guy - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 17th 2009 5:00PM
Fallon logoWhen you have a TV web site, you can be accused of spoiling what is going to happen on readers' favorite shows. Even if you post a spoiler alert warning at the start or talk about a plot point three days after it has aired, you can get comments that you shouldn't have posted the story because some people haven't seen the episode yet (why this is true even days after the episode airs I don't understand, but I digress...). Now fans have their own TV guy to champion their cause.

On last night's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen, playing an audience member, interrupted Fallon's desk talk to point out that what Fallon was about to reveal about Lost and Celebrity Apprentice was a "spoiler." He also objected when Fallon started to talk about an old episode of Home Improvement he saw on Nick at Nite this week. Full video after the jump.

Folks, I have no problem with people watching a TV show one, two, seven, or nine days after it airs. I just don't understand why someone would go on a TV blog and read a post or a review before they've seen the episode and then cry "spoiler!"

"why this is true even days after the episode airs I don't understand, but I digress..."

After all these years, you still haven't figured it out? You sure writing for TV is your calling?

This was the first truly funny "bit" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Yeah, I'm the type of person who goes for the lazy and obvious jokes.

It would be funny(er) if it wasn't so true. I'm glad you came back and clarified your comment as a joke- these days, folks are bound to get bent over just about anything, especially "spoiler" whiners.

PS, I haven't had time to read the end of my own comment yet, so please don't tell me how it ends. /sarcasm

Total jackass 2 rows back.

Timeshifting is a convenience, and people who do it should not be afforded the same protections as regular viewers.

Yeah, because we all know it's sooooo inconvenient to save discussion of the actual content of episodes for after the jump.

Newsflash for you, and apparently Bob - timeshifting is very nearly the norm. "Regular" (as in watch while being broadcast) viewers are a dying breed.

To use a personal example, I'm a faithful viewer of Chuck. However, I don't watch it until our weekly get-together with friends on Saturdays. That's what, 5 days? Now I'm not generally the type to get heartbroken if I see a spoiler, but it does illustrate that people have indeed not seen it until "days after the episode airs".

I'm not saying there shouldn't be a statute of limitations for crying "spoiler", but waiting a week for above the jump discussion of current plot points won't kill anyone.

OTOH, anyone who goes below the jump before seeing the episode forfeits the "right" to cry spoiler, particularly if there was a warning.
