Matthew Fox says he's done with TV after Lost

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Mar 17th 2009 5:27PM

Matthew FoxCall me crazy, but in today's economy, I don't think anyone can be picky when it comes to getting a job.

Unless you're Matthew Fox.

According to various reports, the Lost star claims that when the sci-fi drama finally ends, it'll be the last TV show he ever does. Part of me doesn't blame him. He spent six years on Party of Five, another year trying to make something out of nothing on the abysmally bad UPN (remember them?) drama Haunted, and it'll be five more years notched for him once Lost ends.

So what does he want to do instead? You guessed it, the old standby: focus on his movie career. Um... what movie career? Has he ever watched Vantage Point? Did he sit through Speed Racer? OK, so We Are Marshall was pretty good... but that's it. His TV track record speaks much higher of him than his cinematic resumé does, so why the desire to completely snub the whole medium? Something tells me his tune will change when Lost ends and he isn't getting the phone call about his dream job - a Steve McQueen biopic. How about a Wanted: Dead or Alive remake instead?

How would the author of this article know Mattew Fox's phone wont be ringing, he psychic? So Mattew Fox acted in the bad movie of Speed Racer, he could act in ten more bad movies doesn't change the fact that he has the acting chops. So which ever way he goes he should be A o-kay.
Before someone does a review shouldn't they review the material. If this author had done so would have seen that The Haunted is awesome.

He was a thrill to watch as Racer X in SPEED RACER - which was a great movie, critics be damned. Summer flicks are supposed to light fun and full of Ohh Ahh, which it achieved quite nicely.
Matthew's role in that film was one of the trickier ones to nail, without coming off as too campy. My family and I thought he did pulled it off exceptionally.

Good luck with your movie career, Matt!!
We think you have what it takes to be the next big leading man.

testy testy why wouldn't one want to use their visibility and household name status to move up in the industry? he also has a family, maybe the schedule for tv shows is too rough on them. also, it may be hard to get out of the jack stereotype on a new show. who knows but why bash the guy for it?

@Jason -

Exactly. Taking a half a sound-bite and blowing it up into some personal celebrity critique seems to be the norm these days. (At least you didn't distort the headline like so many others do.) Fox isn't quitting in the middle of a series, putting on airs about movies vs. TV, or stroking his ego. He's talked before about how much a television show takes out of you, and how long it takes you away from your home and family.

How can anyone argue with this strategy after it worked out so well for David Caruso?

Comparing Mathew Fox to a hack of an actor in David Caruso is just wrong.

Mathew Fox has more talent than Caruso ever had.

Methinks the writer of this post has never seen Haunted, and simply assumed it was bad because it was quickly canceled by UPN.

When Matthew Fox first came on the scene (way back in the days of Party of Five), I figured he could possibly replace Tom Cruise in the movies. Now that Tommy is sort of nuts and has a bad rep with the moviegoing public, perhaps Fox has a chance at taking on the movie roles that might have originally gone to Cruise.

Your all crazy. Matthew Fox was awesome in Speed Racer. I loved the film, but I can understand why some might be put off by it, but even after that I can't see how anyone could say that Matthew Fox was anything less than awesome in that film.

After a few years he'll be back to TV just like how Sarah Michelle Gellar is.
