Here's why Obama on The Tonight Show was so historic - VIDEO

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 20th 2009 8:44AM
President Obama on The Tonight Show
As I was watching President Obama chat with Jay Leno last night, one thought kept crossing my mind: how unusual it was to see a current president sitting in the same chair as David Spade. It's just odd and somewhat disconcerting to see the man who's the supposed leader of the free world engaging in lighthearted banter with Jay, and responding to the audience when it cheered or booed something. During the third segment, I almost expected to see the flat screen TV behind Jay pop up so they could show a clip from Obama's latest project.

And that's why the appearance was so historic. It doesn't matter how many times a president goes on a talk show before or after he's in office; while in office, pretty much all interviews go to him. It doesn't matter what show it is; it could be a Sunday morning issues show like Meet The Press or a twinkie-fest like Larry King Live. But in just about every case, the interviewer goes to wherever the president is and sits down with him for a quiet, reverent interview.

Something about respecting the "dignity" of the office always meant that any interview had to be done at a time and place of the current president's (or, more accurately, his staff's) choosing. So, even though Senator and candidate Obama looked completely natural sitting next to Jay six or so months ago, President Obama looked odd sitting on that set. It's all context; it's the same man, just with a new job. But it's the office that gives whoever's in it a different stature.

As far as the content of the conversation, there was really nothing more substantive than what you've heard Obama say on those evening news soundbites; as Danny mentioned the other day, Leno's not exactly Edward R. Murrow. He joked around about how unimpressed his daughters were about being on Marine One, and talked about the arrival of the new dog for the umpteenth time. But most of the conversation kept to the dire state of the economy and the AIG bonus kerfuffle.

To Obama's credit, he was as smooth and comfortable as he's always been, and knows how to deal with a late-night audience. He acted no differently than he did when he was a candidate (OK, he wore a tie this time around. But that's it).

Maybe this is the beginning of a new trend; Obama might be the first president to see the value of the late-night shows and the size of the audience they can reach. He might also realize that it's absurd to use these shows for all they're worth when you're running for office, then ignore them as soon as your inaugurated, as his predecessors have.

But still... it just seems weird to realize that in a few weeks, Vin Diesel will be given the same treatment when he comes on the show to promote Fast and Furious.

Here's video of Obama's appearance if you missed it:

I WRITE THIS COMMENT WITH NO OFFENCE, NOR CONTROVERSY IN MIND. I'M A DISABLED VETERAN
WWII. I NEVER HEARD OF THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS. GUESS I'VE BEEN LIVING IN MY OWN LITTLE COCOON. AS DISABLED, SOME OF US TEND TO DO THAT. I WISH TO THANK EVERYONE FOR INFORMING ME ABOUT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS AND ITS CARING FOR OUR DISABLED. AS FOR TALK SHOWS AND PRESIDENTS. OUR COMMANDER IN CHIEF SEEMS LIKE A NICE PERSON, A CALM AND INTERESTING PERSON, KNOWLEDGABLE, KIND, TALKS SOFTLY, SMILES OFTEN AND NEVER FROWNS, EVEN WHEN CAUGHT IN THE RAIN. WE VOTED FOR CHANGE. AND IT'S A GREAT CHANGE FROM OUR LAST PRESIDENTIAL ADMINISTRATION -- WHEN THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF WOULD ADMONISH QUOTE: "I'M THE DECIDER -- I'M THE PRESIDENT, I DON'T NEED TO ANSWER TO ANYONE." A WONDERFUL CHANGE WE HAVE TODAY, HAVING A COMMANDER IN CHIEF WHO SPEAKS SOFTLY, SMILES ELOQUENTLY AND SHOWS NO ARROGANCE -- CONSIDERING HE HOLDS THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS OFFICE IN THE WORLD, THE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA -- GOD BLESS...

To Brad I say great. I am pleased that you can find no offence in Obama's statement and the same applies to thousands of others with special needs who won't. But as a somi supporter and brother of a special needs indivual, his statement is exactly the mindset that we have been trying to quell for years and to educate the public to change perceptions and attitudes about special needs indivduals. Bless you, Bruce.

I tend to agree I didn't like Obama being on the Leno show Although Jay is a very intelligent peson and the discussion can be very interesting. I don't feel he meant to hurt anyone with his comment he is too nice of a person and people person. I hope people except his apology. Don't judge him to harshly. Everyone needs a fresh start to prove himself. Give him a break no one is
perfect!!

Yes it does bother me and it would bother all these Obama lovers too if it were Bush or any Republican demeaning the office of the President by lowering it to the rank of "movie star".

He's the leader of the free world occupying the same office as Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy (pick your favorite).

It lowers his stature, the stature of the office and the stature of the United States of America. Go ahead and bash Bush - he's gone. But no other president (pick the worst) has lowered the status of the POTUS as quickly as this amateur.

All I could think of watching our President on late-night tv was - wonder if there's a solider having his limmbs blown-off in Afghanistan tonight while his commander in chief trots around like John Travolta hocking his latest movie.

It is disgusting - especially given the Hypocrites defending him now.

Obama (the bad dvd re-gifter) is a light-weight amateur not worthy of the office and it shows more everyday.

The emperor has no clothes!

I think most people in this country don't care about politics, don't listen to NPR and other actual news stations, don't get up early sunday morning to listen to the pundits, are not involved and are not clued in. Looking at dismal ratings and the continuing cuts to the political staff at news organizations only reinforces my opinion that this country is functionally politically illiterate.

Frankly, I see Obama's appearance on the Tonight Show as a way for him to actually appeal to the masses and to get his message out to people who may ordinarily not listen to anything more than a 7 second sound clip on the evening news.

I also fail to see how this is so different or degrading to the office of the President than appearing at small "town hall" meetings and fielding questions from the audience.

Obama was not "performing" as Clinton did with his sax or Nixon did with his Laugh In appearance. He was granting an interview, if the venue of the highest rated late night talk show was inappropriate than so is showing up in Costa Mesa CA or in some rundown coffee and breakfast restaurant in the middle of nowhere Ohio.

I guess this is the sign of the times. We now have presidents going on late night shows and various blogs intermixing various topics unrelated to what they were set up to do.
