Reaper: The Favorite

Sam, Ben and Sock hiding in tub from soul on Reaper
(S02E04) Reaper pulled it out again with another winner of an episode. Something tells me they know exactly what they are doing this season, and I'm loving every second of it.

Although I enjoyed the addition of Morgan, the Devil's other son, very much, I was getting a bit irritated that they kept introducing new characters -- Kristen, Nina, Morgan -- and just left the whole storyline with Sam's dad floating out there. I was getting nervous that they didn't really know what to do with it, so they were just going to drop it and hope we didn't remember. Well, they got back to it tonight, and I can't wait to see it all come together.

But we'll get to that later. Let's talk about the rest of the episode first...

The Sock and Andi game
Yep, he's still having fun. What I like about Sock this season is that his "evil plans" have taken on a whole new level of cleverness. Last season, he was just annoying and obnoxious and always seemed to be screwing things up for Sam. I like that he's masterfully getting life to work for him at the expense of everyone else this season. The Les Nessman brilliance of last week's episode gave way to his subcontracting Ted to do his work.

Andi wins again, though, as she not only gets permission to hire Ted -- as a trainee -- but also put Sock in charge of training him, for the next six months. We get one of the best lines of the night out of this development: "Little girl, I was working in this store while you were still experimenting with alternative lifestyles at summer camp." -- Ted to Andi

Nina and Ben
Sex trouble with a demon ... what a boring, typical storyline. Man, this one is on all the shows. Seriously, though, I think my favorite part of their whole exchange was when Nina was shoving the burger in her mouth to avoid talking to Ben about it, and they added some majorly gross crunching and swallowing to the soundtrack. Ewwww.

Or maybe it was when Ben actually asks Gladys for sex advice. Trash bags?

Morgan
What did you think of Morgan? I thought he was the perfect smarmy offsping of the Devil, a real chip off the old block. Probably Sam and Morgan would meld into the perfect son, as the Devil wished. It was fun to see the rest of the cast get charmed by him, even Andi. They say Morgan's got the "it" factor; Sam just calls him a dick.

Incidentally, that gorgeous hunk of ... metal was a Maserati GranTurismo. What did you think I was going to say?

The Devil
He was a bit understated this week, probably due to Morgan taking some of his heartless lines. Still, though, he delivered my favorite quote of the episode:
"Since when did you care if people get killed?" - Sam
"I don't. Good call. " - The Devil

The Soul
Did anyone else think this guy looked a bit like one of the Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Creepy. And not as significant as last week's, which is a device I hope they get back to. From barfing up gold coins that morph into killer bugs to swallowing the ring, he was seriously gross.

The Back Story
Finally -- they went there! I didn't expect to see Sam's dad as a zombie; I really thought he'd be a demon or something immortal. How are they going to explain this? I'm very anxious for next week.

I just hope that all of the new characters don't interfere with giving the existing ones some depth, along with a complex development of the back story. We still need to get back to Alan, the soul who got out of his deal with the Devil, don't forget.

One last thing worth mentioning: the shout-out to Leverage. I seem to be finding Leverage tributes in a lot of shows this week; maybe I'm just missing my favorite new show of the season desperately, but I loved Morgan asking who was the surveillance guy, the tech guy, the fighting guy when they were about to steal the painting. Cute.

Is it just me or are the "vessels" getting more deadly this season? Cattle prods and knives? What happened to the RC Cars, dirt devils, and toasters?

Man I am having so much fun with this Sock/Andi business. I was really hoping last week wasn't the only time they would conflict.

Anyways, this season is getting so much better. The introduction of all these characters aren't so bad, well maybe not Kristen.

Hopefully The CW sees the fact that they made a mistake throwing Reaper against the wolves since it scored a season ratings high because of Obama. Oh who am I kidding?

That was more of a shout-out to any Heist movie or tv show that has ever been made, not just Leverage.

Also, I could be wrong, but wasn't that HIMYM shout-out for Snatch rather than Leverage?

Snatch and by extension Hustle, Smith, Oceans, all the heist shows/movies do that. It's probably nothing to do with Leverage at all.

I'm gonna say it here and I think I'll be the first.
In shows like this, there is always a balance; good vs evil and so on. Well, we have the Devil and Sam but what is missing is God. I think Ted is God. I think we'll find out something like Ted is God and he's been keeping an eye on Sam and the guys. I'm not religious or anything like that, I just think that would make a great twist later maybe close to the show's finale - which I hope isn't for a long time too.

Good call on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Especially since he was after his sunken boat.

Where those all of Morgan's real teeth? It kind of looked like he was wearing fangs and spoke with a lisp.

I liked the name of the Soul, also: Edmund Fitzgerald. I wonder how many younger viewers caught that? There's a Gordon Lightfoot song about it from the '70's that was fairly popular in it's day.

I didn't catch it, but had Gordon Lightfoot songs stuck in my head all night... That's why!

Fans of ESPN's morning sports talk duo should be well aware of Gordon and that song.
