American Idol: Top 10 perform
You guys, Paula is in a tutu. I repeat: Paula Abdul is wearing a tutu, and she and Ryan are flirting and may be going out after the show. Things are weird on Idol tonight. Paula is telling the contestants to "challenge their artistic integrity," but I don't think that's what she actually wants them to do. It's Motown week, and I'm scared. Motown has so many songs that these people should never touch, so it's really just setting them up for failure. For the most part, however, they do a pretty good job with it. But I wasn't wrong about things getting weird: Toward the end of the episode, Simon flat out takes a Sharpie and draws a mustache on Paula's face.
As another bonus for me, I'm watching this with a friend who hasn't seen a single episode this season, so I get to put my preconceived notions against her fresh eyes.

Feb. 26, 2009: Adam Lambert Makes the Top 12
"I didn't care for him at all. I thought he was way over the top and way too theatrical for that song. I'm sure he'll get through. I'll be interested to see what he does when they have themes. Maybe he'll grow on me, but right now I would put him second or third behind some of the other ones I've heard."

"I don't really get the appeal. I mean, he's a likeable guy, but as a performer, he just doesn't seem that good to me. I definitely thought Ricky and Anoop sounded better."

Matt Giraud - "Let's Get it On"
Okay, first off, this is a terrible song choice. This has been done at every karaoke bar in the country, and it's nearly impossible to not come off as a parody when you sing this song. He does an admirable job with it, but as my friend says, "I don't like his junk staring at me." He ditches the piano and dances awkwardly at us. Simon thinks his dancing is corny, but the judges love his performance and Simon even calls him a front-runner.
Kris Allen - "How Sweet It Is"
This is another problematic song for me: It's been in so many romantic comedies and commercials that it's lost all meaning and has almost become a jingle. However, he does a great job with it. Kris has always been one of my favorites, and you can tell he's having a great time. The judges love him, as well.
Scott MacIntyre - "You Can't Hurry Love"
I adore this song, and I love that he's trying something new with it, but when he started out all slow, I kind of hated it. But once he sped up, I liked it. He has kind of a James Taylor-like tone to his voice, although I wouldn't say he sounds similar. In any case, I thought he did a good job, and I liked this performance more than I've like his last few. The judges, however, are split on his performance.
Megan Joy Corkrey - "For Once in My Life"
Okay, I've always loved Megan Joy's voice, but I really don't think she knows what to do with it. Her enunciation is weird, and she just kind of comes off as a little drunk. I don't exactly know why, but I feel like if Lucille Bluth were to knock back a few martinis and sing karaoke, it would be a lot like this performance. The judges pretty much savage her, as well.
Anoop Desai - "Ooh, Baby Baby"
Dude. This is a hard song to do, so pulling this off would be pretty impressive. It's kind of a slow song, so it's not a typically flashy American Idol song. My friend said that it was beautiful and she may be pregnant just from listening to it. The judges didn't tell him he knocked it out of the park, but their comments were mostly positive. I love him.
Michael Sarver - "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"
I just find this exhausting. He's trying way too hard, and I'm not impressed. As my friend says, "This is not a song you smile through." She's right; he's not paying attention to the song or the lyrics in any way. He's just "performing," and I find it annoying. The judges agree with me, and are pretty negative across the board.
Lil Rounds - "Heatwave"
Based on her clip from Detroit, I was worried about this. Lil Rounds goes over the top really easily, and I was afraid that's what she was going to do tonight. However, her performance was energetic and fun. There were a couple of bad notes, but overall, she did a pretty good job with it.
Adam Lambert - "Tracks of My Tears"
I'm not really clear as to why he dressed up like K.D. Lang, and some of his faces during this song were downright terrifying. The song itself wasn't my cup of tea, but I do think what he did with it was interesting. Kara has six words for him: "one of the best performances of the night." I'm pretty sure that is more than six. The point is, the judges love it.
Danny Gokey - "Get Ready"
I still think of this song as the CBS promo song, so it's kind of difficult for me. He does his trademark Danny Gokey over-singing, but overall, it's a fun, high-energy performance. Simon doesn't like it, but the rest of the judges are pretty much on board.
Allison Iraheta - "Papa Was a Rolling Stone"
I'm terrified by her outfit, but her performance is pretty strong. She's one of the contestants that's improving every week. She's becoming more confident, and it really shows in her singing. However, I don't think she enunciated as well as she could have, and a lot of her words ran together. The judges love it, and Kara instructs all of you to vote for her.
Kris and Anoop have always been two of my favorites, so I was thrilled to see them do so well tonight. Who did you like best? And more importantly, who do you think should go home? Personally, I think Michael Sarver has overstayed his welcome, and Megan Joy is getting mighty close.
