Move over Buffy... here comes Anita Blake

by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 1st 2009 12:02PM
Anita BlakeWe have another vampire hunter coming to television. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter is being adapted for a TV movie on IFC. Ms. Blake is the star of a series of novels as well as comic books by Laurell K. Hamilton.

I haven't read the books or the comic books. Hamilton's books have been described to me as "supernatural erotica". For those who have read any of the series, would that be accurate?

The vampire thing is getting a bit overdone. Buffy and Angel are long gone, but now we have True Blood (a similar premise), the Twilight movies and now this. On the other hand, we've long had the Anne Rice books, Dark Shadows and various other vampire lore so it's not a new thing. It's more like an adaption of an old thing for changing times.

I'm still waiting for the television series of Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter. There's a winner right there.

Hmm Danse Macabre was a low point in the series in terms of forgetting story and writing about sex, but having just read Skin Trade I say Brilliant! This was one of the best in the Anita Blake series and I for one cannot wait for the TV effort. I dont know why people seem to get hung up on the sex? In the majority of books its not that bad. Anyway, what do you expect when the ardeur runs rampant? ;)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.........Do not compare the Anita Blake series to Tru Blood especially Twilight. LKH's books are far more violent, gory, imaginative and deals with more than just vampires. And the sex is sooo damn steamy it'll not only make the Twilight tweens blush but your mom too.

I do agree that the last 7 or 8 books were mainly about sex and took away from what I fell in love with the books in the first place, but I still remain a slave to Laurell K Hamilton's twisted dark imagination.

If you were to compare this series to anything, I would say compare it to the show Supernatural. I just hope that the Anita Blake show/movie is uncensored and not a lame imitation of the books (ie Tru Blood).

I think this world setting that LKH has created has the potential to be amazing. I'm up to date in with the books and yes there is lots of sex, but what's wrong with that? People have sex...some everyday even! lol...Sex makes apperances in tv show's like Rome, Weeds, Tru Blood, Tudors, and ton's in Californacation. I don't think it impacts the stories in a negative way. Prudes won't like this show. But fans who grew up watching Buffy I think will appericate the more adult setting. I know I can't wait to see the characters come to life!!

I'm an LKH fan. I started reading the series 10 years ago. Yes, I cheerfully call it vampire porn and fairy porn (it's gotten a little heavy on the sex) but I have to say, it's FANTASTIC. It's not like she's (usually) throwing sex into the mix just to have a sex scene. It's always related to something. Growth of the characters, an increase in magical power levels. A furthering of the overall development of the plot. The characters have depth and complexity. Seriously, how often to want to reach into a book and strangle someone for not getting over their hangups? (read RICHARD on that one). Even Anita is growing up in her realizations that not everything in life has to be about fitting in with society, but instead fitting into your own skin. I think LKH has made a bunch of great social comments as well as written a KICK @ss series about a strong female protagonist with problems and hangups of her own. And then she went and did it again with the Merry Gentry series.

So whatever you have to say about LKH and the Anita Blake series, it will be an adventure. I used to tell my friends when recommending the series..it's like Buffy meets Sam Spade meets Anne Rice. All rolled into one dynamo of a package named Anita Blake.

I for one think this series will be great. Providing they don't utterly screw up the casting.

I have read all of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry Books and I think they are great, a series, bring it on. Wake up and feel the love, the characters are amazing and you really get into it, I've also read all the Charlaine Harris books (Sookie Stackhouse). Anita Blake is going to be a great addition to my TV watching experience.

I have been a huge fan of LKH for years. As soon as her newest book comes out, I have it in my hot little hands and have usually finished it before the night is over, already wanting to see the next book.
Yes, there is a lot of sex in her books, but what's wrong with that? Romance novels are an extremely profitable genre, so why not add a bit more mysticism and erotica to it? I have never had a problem with her writings and have even read the Meredith Gentry novels, too.
I can honestly say that LKH's books can make me laugh and cry in almost the same page at times. Not many who write these types of books can claim that.

It's so weird for me to read all of these comments because I actually like LATER AB better than the beginning AB. I love that she's a progressive woman when it comes to the bedroom. She isn't just a sex-hound, she actually loves all of the men in her life. She's a bad-ass, polyamourous. And some of the later books have great villains. Villains that actually give me chills. I'm a huge, huge fan of Buffy, but I like the world that Laurell K. Hamilton created. I like the whole necromancer angle...and the legal system accepting vampires as citizens, and allowing zombie testimony in court. I'd definitely give the made for tv movies a shot.

Buffy and Angel are not over. They live on in comic form.
