Damages: Trust Me (season finale)

Glenn Close and William Hurt
(S02E13) "I've been having one helluva shitty month and someone is gonna pay." - Patty

Another great ending to another great season of television. The general consensus seems to be that season two of Damages far outpaced season one. They were pretty tied up for me - that was, until last night's finale. Just like the first season, by the time we got to the end, we'd already seen most of the episode because of all the flashbacks. Same goes this time around - season two's flash-forwards provided us with a pretty solid sense of what to expect. The beauty of Damages is that there was still about 20 minutes worth of plot holes that needed filling. Seeing it all play out, in order, was phenomenal.

We knew Patty would end up in Ellen's hotel room and we assumed that Ellen would get a confession out of Patty. She did just that. What we could never have seen coming was Patty's conscience (still appearing to her in the form of Ray Fiske) having a say in her actions as well.

Patty knew full well that Dave Pell was the government connection once Phil confirmed that Dave a.) had told him about the FBI probe and b.) put him on the list for energy secretary. Based on all that and one other key scene, Patty was able to orchestrate everything in her favor. The key other key scene I'm referring to? When Ellen came over and sat down on Patty's couch. Just like the "Do you regret what we did moment?" from season one, Ellen almost seemed pushy when she told Patty to go for the bribe; that it needed to be done. Any suspicions Patty may have had about Ellen were confirmed for her right there if you ask me.

So she taped her conversation with Dave Pell, was able to secure evidence to nail Kendrick and UNR, and then brought Tom and his sister Cynthia (a US attorney) into the fold - ensuring that Pell, Agent Werner, and his FBI boss all took the fall for a corrupt case. It was brilliantly executed and while I'm not 100% sure if I'm describing it correctly, the way it played it was edge-of-your-seat stuff. Looks like Patty's guilt got the best of her and it turns out that it kept Ellen out of jail - again.

The key thing to take away from all this? Despite how organized, determined, and calculated Ellen was, Patty was still a step ahead of her. The outcome was positive, but remember, had Patty wanted to, she still could've won the UNR case and put Ellen away for good.

However, all the emotions associated with Julia (Patty's stillborn daughter) that were presented in season one are still important here. She sees a lot of herself in Ellen and that had to influence her decisions in some regard. That and the guilt. Did I mention the guilt? She actually looked relieved when she finally admitted the truth to Ellen. Then again, that semi-euphoric/terrified look she had might have had something to do with the knife wound. Finn stabbed her! Did not see that coming.

Final thoughts -

  • What exactly was the value of showing Frobisher gushing about his new eco-friendly headquarters? Well, I think it was telling that when Patty dreamt of all the men in her life - Phil, Pete, Michael, Tom, Ray, Kendrick - Art was the only one missing. So perhaps he's graduated in a sense? Time to do some real good? Time will tell.
  • For as smart as they keep saying Michael is, he sure acts stupid. When's he going learn that his mother is smarter? The look on Jill's face when Patty said she sent all of Michael's stuff there was priceless.
  • As we all expected, it was Messer that Wes shot in the car. This really hinders Ellen ever finding out that Rick was who killed David. The only connection now is Wes and if she finds out the truth from him? Watch out.

The ending was fairly similar to the pilot episode, with Tom and Patty addressing the future at her lake house. However, there was no real cliffhanger. Last season, we had the knowledge that Ellen would be working for the FBI and this time around, all we know is that she's been MIA for weeks. She told David (at the cemetery) that she got a job offer - but from who? Patty seemed confident that Ellen would be back. Could she have made the offer? Maybe up Ellen to partner? Good thing this show has already been renewed.

have to agree that while the show is very well written and well acted the finale was diappointingly "unclever".

first pattys stabbing was silly. if the trader was trying to kill her than he would have gutted her properly. having him just stab her twice and leave added nothing to the story. if it was to provide some source to give patty hallucinations of bein warned of her wrong doing--she was already doing this in her dreams on her own and she could have had another hallucination in the elevator without needing to be near dead.

Also, Patty's discovery of ellen's treason was only brought out by her conversation with dave pell (watch her reaction--why else tell them that ellen was to be fingered for the crime -this was revenge not careful planning-she now knows that dave pell has informants and has used the FBI for unscrupulous means--more than sufficient to burn the FBI agent by using the tape she is then recording -- and she has other evidence against dave pell already for trade fixing et al).

it also makes little sense that tom helps patty out after her yelling at him/firing him and his more recent shouting back about wrongful dismissal. Even sycophant tom would take some time to convalesce before going back to Patty after that.

Finally ellen has no reason to take the suitcase in the end
1) she got what she needed from patty in her confession of attempted murder--and if she really wanted to nail her she could have videotaped that.
2) she isnt trying to trap the judge--she could have done that already and there is nothing in it for her
3) I don't believe that she thought after catching the judge with the FBI's trap (if she didnt know the FBI was double crosing her) that the evidence would then be allowed in evidence in this or any other case.

what should have happened is that ellen explained the case to tom --that patty had tried to have her killed. tom doesnt believe her but after convincing him she then tells tom to give her the gun as a means of co-ercing the truth. She also knows about tom's sister and tells him to inform her of the case as a back up in case something is afoot with the FBI (she seems not at all suprised when she asks the FBI if patty got to her--and ellen knows to trust no-one--if she is wrong than nothing lost). Then when she hears the confession and decides this is sufficient (or has a second videotape for blackmail or backup against her later) she lets patty leave, who goes to give the bribe. Patty goes and offers the bribe (otherwise ellen may have had a way to bring her down with allegations of impropriety-possibly she taped prior conversations) but b/c she knew she might be in trouble with the FBI (if pell double crosses her) --She contacts another outiside law agency and says she knew the judge was corrupt and was proving it so they could arrest him. Any accusations the judge has of previous arrangements with patty would appear as sour grapes and patty would have been smart enough to not have left a paper trail.

Patty gets away again and wins her legal case but ellen has ammo on her still for season 3.---ellen joins a law firm and is opposing counsel and can deabate over using pattys confession agaist her to win the trial.

The Deacon (Darrell Hammond) should've killed the hooker and then Garrity should've arrived and killed The Deacon with the ice pick. He then follows Patty, she turns him down, he panics and stabs her since he's screwed. That would've been better.

None of this Kendrick business, he wouldn't do that.

Ellen had to go through the deal so the Marshal's could arrest the FBI. If Ellen doesn't show up, the FBI don't show up and Pell and Patty's deal never happens. Patty probably made a deal so nothing would happen to her but she would give the US Marshalls Pell and Kendrick. Maybe there are more deleted scenes explaining stuff. But the writing could've been a bit better.

wow, I wonder if I watched the same show and season as the rest of y'all.

I loved season 1, hung through this year, but where was the payoff? Too many times, this show seems to just wing it. Why was it important for Wes to get the room across the hall? Why, if Patty's plan all along was to bust Dave Pell with the recording and spare Ellen did she have Ellen go through with the bribe? More to the point, isn't Patty at risk now since she's bribed the judge in the past why wouldn't he give her up? What was the point with Frobisher? Why wouldn't Pell have Finn killed? He's already had an FBI agent killed earlier.

I like the actors and the general premise. It just feels as if the writers make it up as they go along.

Damages is fabulous!! Great acting and great writing. It is the best show of the season!!! The actress who plays Ellen is phenominal and offers just the right amount of tension. We keep wondering what she is thinking and how she will get the best of Patty. I can't wait till next season!!!

Decent season overall, but it seemed a bit unfocused. Too much going on. I think Season 1 was a bit better.

I'm guessing we'll hear more about Frobisher's environmental efforts in Season 3. Perhaps that will be the focus of the season?

For me, this season was equal to the first, if not better. I just totally threw myself into the story and was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

All of the actors are above superb and story as gripping as any I've seen. A++++ for Glenn Close and another Emmy nod for her.

And added enjoyment is coming here to see what's being said.

Love this series. Wish more details had been cleared up: wedding gift, Pete's folder contents, etc. I, too, wondered how a cop wouldn't have seen a grown man in his back seat. But it's a wonderful series that I'm glad will be back. Love these strong, lonely women though I don't know anyone like them.

I liked the finale, but I thought the 2nd season as a whole didn't really have the punch that the 1st had.
