David Letterman on the last episode of The Jon Stewart Show - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 7th 2009 5:02PM
The Jon Stewart ShowLong before he was host of The Daily Show (well, about five or six years before), Jon Stewart hosted a late-night talk show, titled The Jon Stewart Show. It was a good show (first on MTV then syndicated), very casual and rock and roll and young, and probably should have lasted longer, though I guess he wouldn't have gone on to do The Daily Show.

After the jump is footage from the last episode, where David Letterman was the guest. Letterman doesn't do many talk shows, so Stewart probably immensely appreciated the fact that he'd take the time to do his last one (probably one of the reasons why Stewart looks up to Letterman to this day). Letterman talks about Paul Newman, why getting canceled doesn't mean you're a failure, and hosting the Oscars (which is funny, considering Stewart would do the same thing years later).

The only bad part about this video is that it ends with them about to go to a clip from the last episode of Letterman's first talk show on NBC, a short-lived morning show (Stewart is right, that show was really great). But the video ends and I can't find any footage of the last episode on YouTube, though there are several other videos from Letterman's morning show on there so go knock yourselves out.

I loved "The Jon Stewart Show" when it was in syndication (in or around '94, I think). Thought it was such a great show, lots of fun, and I was really bummed when it got canceled. I did not know what exactly would become of Mr. Stewart's career following that unfortunate setback but am so glad he was able to land so solidly on his feet in the end.

Ben: thanks for providing that link. Very cool to see. Interesting the names you see in the credits too.

Harve Mann sings a salute to "Las Vegas Gambit", in the final segment of the final episode of Dave's daytime show:

(Apologies if this posts multiple times--apparently TV Squad and Firefox don't play well together...)

For the record, Stewart at one time had a deal with Worldwide Pants. It was rumored that he would take the Late Late Show when Tom Snyder retired. I don't recall the exact timing (i.e. if Craig Kilborn got the gig or if Comedy Central made an offer first), but the rest is history.

My point is that there has always been a mutual admiration between Letterman and Stewart -- to the point that Letterman seemed to have "tapped him" as a possible successor.
