American Idol: Results Show (1 of 8 goes home)

Alright, results show: I haven't watched the episode yet; it just started and I have it on pause so I can make my predictions. I think the bottom three is going to be Anoop, Lil Rounds and Scott. Lil Rounds will go home. Anything else would officially shock me, but I love being shocked, so here's hoping.

We're still on the whole "year of their birth" thing, so Ryan makes a big deal about how old Simon is by showing a clip of Frankie Avalon singing in the year he was born. Then the stage opens, and Frankie Avalon himself comes out and sings. Simon looks completely surprised and amused. It's actually a really cute moment, and Frankie sounds great.

Enough of that, though; I want to find out who's going home! So let's get on with it. We've got 50 minutes of filler left before we get our answers.

The group sing, appropriately, is from the year Idol was born: 2001. They're singing Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head." Remember how I said last night that Allison always makes her performances look effortless? Yeah ... turns out dance music is her kryptonite. It just doesn't work for her at all. To be fair, it doesn't really work for everyone, and Matt just kind of looks like he's trying to poop. It's really bad, and I'm grateful when it's over.

The Ford commercial is next, and while I always find these embarrassing, this one is probably the coolest looking one I've seen. The theme is magic, and they shot it in an old Vaudeville theater. The director did a great job with the feel of it, and the fact that they were singing Britney Spears' "Circus" just made me laugh. All in all, it was actually enjoyable this week.

After the commercial, it's time to start finding out who's in the bottom three. Ryan has Adam, Kris, and Anoop stand up. Adam is obviously safe, so he immediately sits back down, leaving Kris and Anoop up there. One of them is in the bottom three, and unsurprisingly, it's Anoop, which means Kris is safe.

Tonight's random pop star performance is Flo-Rida, and I come to the realization that he's the guy on the radio who does the song that's like that other song from a long time ago. Also, I am old. This is also evidenced by the fact that I enjoy this performance because it makes sense to me -- unlike Lady Gaga from last week. She just baffles me. Also,

Dear Awesome Backup Singer Lady,
If you have to constantly tug down your skirt when you have a break in the song, it's probably too short. You are super talented at your job, but that doesn't mean I want to see your business. Pants: look into it.
Love, Kona

We come back and Ryan turns the mood lighting back on. He calls up Danny, who is safe (even though his song choice was bull). Next up is Matt, who, after a strong performance last night, is also safe. Ryan calls Scott up and tells him that he's the second contestant in the bottom three. I expect him to go to commercial, but instead he has Allison and Lil stand up. Ryan points out that Allison has been in the bottom three twice, while Lil never has. This week, it's the opposite, with Lil in the bottom three, and Allison sitting in the comfy seats.

Now it didn't take a genius to predict the bottom three, but I've got to say that I'm pretty impressed with myself for being 3 for 3 tonight. Now let's just see if I was right about who's going home.

After we find out who our bottom three is, Kellie Pickler comes out to perform. I haven't watched Pickler perform since she was on Idol, and she seems a lot more confident than she was on the show. She's super-cute and crazy-eyed, but I'm not terribly impressed with her performance. I do feel bad for her, though, since she'll probably always be seen as the poor man's Carrie Underwood.

After Kellie is done singing and Ryan sends her scampering off backstage with the promise of calamari, it's time to get down to business. Seacrest immediately shoots all of my theories to hell when he announces that Lil is safe. That leaves only Scott and Anoop, meaning that there's a 50/50 chance that tonight's results are going to piss me off.

Out of 34 million votes, Ryan informs us that only 30,000 separate the two, and the person with the lowest number of votes is Scott. As likable as Scott is, I agree with this decision and think it's time for him to go. With that said, he does turn in a better performance tonight than he did last night-- it's still not great though.

After his performance, Ryan asks Simon what the judges think, and he tells them that two of them want him to stay, but two of them think he should go. I'm pretty sure it's Simon and Randy against Kara and Paula here. Paula looks like she's about to break down, and even Simon seems to be having a bit of a hard time. When pushed to make a decision though, Simon tells him it's the end of the road.

Once again, I like Scott, but he just wasn't doing it for me anymore. What about you? Did America and the judges get it right, or was tonight's elimination a travesty?

Regardless of what people say about Anoop it is nice imo to see someone of a nationality other than Caucasion, Hispanic and African American show great talent. In my own humble opinion the judges are way too critical of these kids many times and it is unwarranted. When Anoop stood up to the judges I was so proud of him. I was also quite shocked to see Simon tell Anoop that it was quite alright for the kids to stand up for themselves. Let's face it the dislike many have for Anoop has more to do with him as opposed to his talent. The other thing I want to say is imo you are way off base to think Anoop showed any disrespect to Scott . It is not as if Scott was having a mental breakdown or something. He showed a hell of a lot more respect to Scott than did Simon to Megan. Regardless of her not showing as much emotion about leaving. She simply accepted her fate. She knew the judges would not save her. None of them at that point gave her the impression they would so why make a scene.

Anyway, I think Anoop is a nice young man and to read anything into him or his actions beyond that imo is simply people needing someone to dislike. Every year it never fails many people find all kinds of goofy reasons to hate on a contestant. These are all good kids and they have always had good kids on the show. You may dislike a contestants singing or talent but to hate on such trivial nonsense as what is discussed on these boards is a waste and goes against what the show is about. None of these kids is a saint and they never will be but they show much better character each season than most of the people who spend the season bashing them. Dislike their singing, but as humans we are all flawed so try to cut them some slack.

The Daughtry example doesn't work. The save is only available until there are 5 contestants and Daughtrey went out fourth. The other problem with the save is the double elimination that follows it. You could go from Top 6 to Top 4 in just one week. My hunch is they may not even use it.

About the save...it would not have helped Chris Daughtry anyway as he was in the top 4 when eliminated.

I think if the judge's save were changed to "Bottom Two sing-off", we're essentially ripping off Britain's X Factor. The format works really well in X Factor, I think, but I have far too little trust in the producers and judges to deal with that. They would STILL send shockers home, and we would be even more pissed at their incompetence.

I would like to see the ousted contestant sing a new song for their judge's save performance, like they do on X Factor or SYTYCD. Pre-record the instrumentals/backing track. And if it's Idol's choice, it shouldn't take THAT much time to learn the song. It's just one extra song per Idol. Have everyone rehearse the song Top 12/13 week and have it in the pocket for whenever they get voted off.

Also, the group song this week was clearly live. Thank god! I would rather see a hideous live group song than a hideous pre-recorded and lip-synched group song anyday. No matter how bad they are, I always enjoy the hilarity of the group song when it's their real, live voices.

However, they should stick to medley of songs with one or two voices per song than try to force group harmonies and voices so much. Their voices are all too unique, it's jarring to hear together. I don't know what happened to the group songs, they used to be fun in the earliest seasons.

I like the IDEA of the Judges' Save, but it's being handled ALL WRONG.

I agree with freedom55 in that they should pit the two lowest vote-getters against one another in a sing off. They are NOT taking the power out of America since no matter what the person leaving would still have one of the lowest votes that night.

But even if they don't go this route, I would implore them to make ONE CHANGE if they bring this back next year. LET THE CONTESTANTS SING WHATEVER THEY WANT if they are singing for their lives. I mean what are the chances that the judges would actually save someone performing a song that the audience or performer didn't connect with?

This would be similar to So You Think You Can Dance. The bottom three "dance for their lives" but they dance their own style and not the dance they performed the night before.

Yes, the judges save thing is handled really awkwardly. I'm thinking they should have a trite little phrase ala Survivor: "The tribe has spoken"; or perhaps The Weakest Link: "You are the weakest link - Goodbye".

Combining the two: "America has spoken - Goodbye"

Oh, but then we have to a phrase for when they use the save: "America has spoken - screw America, we're keeing you!";o)

"But, more than anything else, including talent, American Idol is one big popularity contest; that's only explanation for Kris not being in the bottom three after his horrible performance. He's a pretty boy the tweeners like to scream for, so he gets a free ride."

As if the lot of them don't also depend on tweeners for votes. They ALL cater to those powerful tweener voters if they want to win, so don't single out Kris as some tweener magnet.

Plus apart from this week, he has done amazingly. Maybe not to the same level as Adam, but definitely out singing and out performing other frontrunners such as Matt and Danny some weeks. The fact he wasn't in the bottom this week is because he has built up some good will with the audience after being so consistently good (sometimes great even) the past few weeks.

I like Kris but he's a bore. Can you actually see yourself paying concert prices just to see him perform? I don't think so. (Adam, yes; Kris, no.) As someone else said earlier, he gets a pass because he's a cute guy, not because his talent rises to the level of someone like Adam. (And Danny is just grossly overrated altogether.)

Well, I can't say I'm surprised that Scott got the least number of votes; his performances really was mediocre. I also wasn't surprised to see Lil there either, but Anoop was surprising. I thought his performances of True Colors was really quite good and while I don't think he has the chops to win this, it certainly didn't deserve bottom three status. But, more than anything else, including talent, American Idol is one big popularity contest; that's only explanation for Kris not being in the bottom three after his horrible performance. He's a pretty boy the tweeners like to scream for, so he gets a free ride. Me reminds me of Jason Castro from season 7 in terms of why he keeps getting the votes.

I think American got it right. It was time for Scott to go. Yes, I can acknowledge all that he's overcome, but that doesn't mean he should be treated any differently than everyone else. His performance was bad.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've already grown tired of the whole "judges save" option. Granted, no one has been deserving of that save in my opinion -- even Scott -- but I think it really demeans the contestants. That needs to go.

I know this is going to not sound the way it was meant but an honest question.

Is Scott just blind or is he also slightly slow? I look at him and he always seem a little foggy to me, almost off. Like in a brain way not off in an I cant see way.

Just wondering.

Instead of the last place person singing the song from the night the same way, they should be allowed to change it up or sing another song so they can at least improve on the previous night's performance. Singing it the same way doesn't do anything towards improving it.
