Bobby Moynihan: In the Limelight - VIDEOS

by Annie Wu, posted Apr 10th 2009 12:02PM
Bobby MoynihanAt one point or another during this latest season of Saturday Night Live, every viewer has wondered, "Who is this new guy, and why does he wear so many giant cat costumes?"

While I can't answer the second part of this question (it will remain one of the great mysteries of the late night universe), I can offer a little more information on SNL's resident new guy and rising star, Bobby Moynihan. Despite appearing as a featured player in only twenty episodes so far, Moynihan is fast becoming one of my favorite cast members on the show, right up there with Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig.

Fellow Moynihan fans, prepare to love him even more!

So, here's the basic info: Bobby Moynihan is 32 and an Upright Citizens Brigade regular. He joined the cast last year with Michaela Watkins and Abby Elliott. His weird pepper-obsessed character is named Mark Payne. There.

While looking up extra-information on Mr. Moynihan, I stumbled across this recent interview, in which he describes himself as a "fanboy." All right, bonus points, sir. There are a lot of incredibly interesting points about his road to SNL and adventures so far. I was really surprised to learn that he and John Lutz (yes, the same from 30 Rock -- Shut up, Lutz) were the ones that came up with the "Single Ladies" sketch with Beyonce and Justin Timberlake (Paul Rudd episode). The story behind that and Moynihan's various SNL nerdities really give you a sense of what he's like as a performer and fan.

Also, he still occasionally performs at the Upright Citizens Brigade Sunday ASSSSCAT shows, which is reason enough for me to make a trip to New York City every week.

Now, check out this incredibly awesome -- I was going to use a less casual word, but "awesome" was the only one that fit -- report from the same interviewer. Shortly after the interview, Moynihan invited him to check out SNL from an insider's perspective. I can only imagine how amazing that must have been. Actually no, it's too crazy for me to even imagine. I'm getting a little bleedy 'round the eyes just from thinking about it too much.

Hey, those of you that have never heard of Bobby Moynihan: First of all, congratulations for making it this far. Secondly, educate yourselves. Now.

Here's a video that he did with Derrick Comedy about "Bro Rape," an extra-twisted take on To Catch A Predator.

These are some notable Bobby Moynihan moments from SNL, including the previously mentioned "Single Ladies" sketch. It's a good look for him.

Yes, that was the best version I could find.

This one is the "Whopper Virgins" sketch from the Neil Patrick Harris episode. Moynihan's delighted laughter is a highlight.

Can you even imagine how incredible a sketch featuring both Fred Armisen and Bobby Moyniahan in animal costumes would be? I think the world would explode from too much awesomeness.

The Whopper Virgins sketch is probably my favorite of this whole year...that thing kills me every time.

I would just like to take the time to point out that I called Moynihan being a stronger cast member after his first episode. You can check the comments for that one if you don't believe me.

I had no idea he would be so good at being a cat though.

Bobby is fun to watch. He's really the standout of the new featured players. I especially love him as the son of that Italian talk show host Vinny 'something'. Cracks me up every time. He did a great dance with Anne Hathaway in one skit when she hosted earlier this season. He seems to have great range.
