Brought To You By ... Steve Carell, Jason Alexander, and a hobbit who loves cheese - VIDEOS
Whenever you get into any profession, you have to start at the bottom. The TV business is no exception. The stars you see in prime time today probably cut their teeth working in TV commercials. Heck, some of them still do TV commercials even after they become big stars (but it's often overseas...shhhhhhhh).
After the jump, a sampling of TV commercials from years ago that star celebrities who are now household names. If you're old enough to remember these commercials, you'll probably say to yourself, "Oh yeah, I remember this ad, but I didn't realize that he was in it!"
Here's an ad from 1987 featuring everyone's favorite dumb Friends character. I don't think the ketchup bottle would even stay on the roof that long. It was probably kinda windy up there.
Since Joey went off the air, I wonder if LeBlanc will be doing ketchup commercials again soon.
This ad for McDonald's is from the 80s, too. It features Jason Alexander singing and dancing over the new McDLT. Personally, I think these people are way too excited. It's just a damn sandwich.
Now, this ad featuring Bruce Willis wasn't filmed before he was a star. He was already starring on ABC's Moonlighting when this aired. But it is before he became a megastar via the Die Hard movies. This was the 1980s, when people drank so many wine coolers that bars actually had them on ice behind the bar.
Not sure why Bruce is looking into the camera looking for another guy to come into the bar. These girls look like they'd be open to a threesome.
Farrah Fawcett is in the hospital right now and we hope she gets well. Here's an ad from the early 70s where Farrah gives quarterback Joe Namath a shave. Today, people like Roger Federer and Tiger Woods put their own shaving cream on in their ads.
Here's another ad from the early 70s that Farrah did. And this time she has a costar.
This Apple ad is one we posted here on TV Squad a couple of years ago, but it's worth seeing again. Kevin Costner rides his bike to work and works on his Apple Lisa (this was before the Mac - the Lisa was expensive and not well-received).
Dancing with the Stars/America's Funniest Home Videos host Tom Bergeron got his start on local radio and TV in Boston. Here's a quick promo he did 17 years ago for the show People Are Talking. You can see that he hasn't changed that much.
For all you hobbit geeks out there, this shows that Frodo likes cheese almost as much as he likes powerful rings!
Finally, Steve Carell. He did a ton of commercials before The Office, before The Daily Show, even before The Dana Carvey Show. Here are a couple.
And this one is an old ad he did for Brown's Chicken (embedding has been disabled so you'll have to actually click on the link). I can't take him seriously in these commercials. I keep thinking of the reporting he did on The Daily Show and clueless Michael Scott of The Office, who would pretty much act this way for a commercial, too.
