Okay, maybe Dollhouse isn't done after all

by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 10th 2009 9:39AM
Dollhouse Since my article was posted yesterday, there have been some new developments regarding the unaired 13th episode of Dollhouse that Felicia Day twittered about.

Producer Tim Minear cleared it up on Whedonesque in which he explained that the original pilot Fox had Joss scrap for a new one counted as one of Fox's 13-episode order. As a result, squeezing the budget a little, they created a 13th "coda" episode to the season which supposedly Fox won't air.

I hope Tim Minear is correct, although his response sounds a bit like spin to me. Joss and company certainly have experience with coda episodes (see the 4th season of Buffy for an example). Perhaps Joss himself will be writing and directing this one?

Unless there is an official announcement by Fox that the series has been renewed, I'm reticent to think of it as anything but a thirteen episode mini-series. I hope Fox proves me wrong.

rumours of dollhouses and terminators demise has been greatly exaggerated
dollhouse hasnt been axed
nor has terminator.
in fact they have both just been given a huge boost in the dvr ratings.
this has already saved shows before.

Jeez Louise!! Why not just air the episodes back to back? And if the 13th episode sucks so bad just start it an hour before prime time. People can go a day without simpsons and seinfeld reruns. This 13th episode is turning into that Jerry Lewis Nazi Clown movie that was never released.

If they have already decided on its fate then they have shown that they did exactly what they told Whedon and his fans they wouldn't do. Cut it off without airing all the episodes, take into consideration that Friday nights means lesser ratings, that's just a fact. And not letting the show grow an audience, by perhaps testing its ratings airing it on the middle of the week and comparing how it does comapared to Friday night.

If FOX was planning on renewing it, they would probably also want to show the 13th episode.

It may not be an explicit cancellation, but for all intents and purposes you should consider it the same thing because the message is the same: FOX does not want more Dollhouse.

What did you expect? It's FOX.

Now that the series is actually hitting its stride I'd like to see a second season of Dollhouse. However, considering the disastrous ratings I'd be surprised. If Fox, really wants this series to succeed -- and you'd think they would considering they also produce it -- they would treat it better. Taking it off Fridays and pairing it with a better lead-in might help.
