Glenn Beck's comedy tour

by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 12th 2009 3:32PM
Glenn BeckIn yet another move in the fusion of journalism and entertainment, Fox News' Glenn Beck has announced a new comedy tour in the vein of a "poor man's Seinfeld". No doubt the tour will contain observations that reinforce Mr. Beck's point of view, but with a humorous twist.

I admit that I don't watch Mr. Beck, although based on his press clippings and his Wikipedia page (not the most reliable of sources, but it seems accurate in this case), one can tell that his viewpoint is distinctly conservative. One of the biggest marketing problems of the conservative media nowadays is that they're not very good with humor (Remember The 1/2 Hour News Hour? If so, you're among the minority). Their representatives always seem serious and dour, if not outright angry (and anger tends to sell among the conservative base).

Perhaps Mr. Beck's tour can change that perception. If one of his shows becomes available on television, I would watch it just to see if he succeeds. Maybe Bill O'Reilly can open for him.

Just one commment to the person who thinks that Glenn Beck brings a welcome "spice" to the news: NEWS is not supposed to be ENTERTAINING! If you are "bored" about hearing about famine, starvation, brutal regimes, war, and the collapse of the american economy and need raw populism to "help the medicine go down" then you must belong to a vapid, superficial culture doomed to failure....oh wait. Seriously, not only is Glenn Beck stupid, the whole idea that he is appealing to you because he "makes news fun" and that you represent countless numbers of people who follow this drivel, really undermines my dwindling faith in the american people to reclaim their country.

If you actually watch Glenn Beck, I'm not sure you can call him crazy, angry, or unhinged at all. I feel he is someone that relates to people since he is a self made guy who doesn't take himself too seriously. I don't agree with everything he says (like pushing for everyone to buy gold ...even though I do think inflation is coming). But, he puts things in a very good perspective and makes very valid points that make you think.

Also, I liked what he said about not taking "his" word as gospel because it's up to us to educate ourselves and do our own research. I am of the school of thought that you should read one non-fiction book a month (at least) because 5 years from now we will be the same person we are now if not for the books we read and the people we meet.

Big government never works and absolute power corrupts absolutely. That scares the crap out of me. I'd rather have a large "local" govermnet than an oppressive and over-reaching federal one.

With all of this being said, it's up to US the INDIVIDUAL to take care of our own life and not expect anyone else to fix it. We are NOT our brothers, neighbors, or sister's keeper. We should all be givers and people of charity....but it should never be a mandate....EVER.

God Bless

Another thing about him is he's always crying like a little bitch about stuff, like not being able to hold down his liquor, and having some kind of ass surgery and so maybe a few mexicans crossed the border. You would never catch Lou Dobbs crying about such things and Lou could have a nice stiff drink and still keep it together. Glenn Beck is a whiny bitch ass weak ex-drunk.

Nothing about Glenn Beck strikes me as "poor" - neither him nor his fan base.

I went to a taping of politically incorrect a long time ago. They did 2 tapings and shot a part for a movie EDTV...Dr Drew was there and Woody Harrelson.

Anyway Bill Maher use to be real funny when he was a libertarian and bashed both sides...then he went pro democrate to get bush out and it was down hill for him.

Don't have HBO to watch real time but I do try and catch him on Larry king from time to time.

Nothing wrong with a little anger and passion, but if you think that's how conservatism sells, you haven't listened to any of it. Rush and Glenn's programs are full of humor.

Anger alone doesn't sell, just ask Air America. Talk about humorless.

You admit to not listening to Beck, and then proceed to project all kinds of stereotypes onto him. Incredible.

Beck has an enormous following, everyday people who are no more or less angry than the average person.

Rather than making ignorant assumptions about people, why not practice a little empathy and try to understand why someone like Beck has such a large and devoted audience.

Also, try not to post the least flattering picture of someone you can find, it betrays your bias.

Yes imitating Michael J. Fox struggling with Parkinson's. That was hilarious. Oh that Rush, what a cutup. The bottom line with Beck is that when he was with CNN, he was pretty fair and balanced. The ironic thing is that when he jumped to "fair and balanced" Fox, he went completely Howard Beale. You know, the mentally unbalanced news anchor from Network.

Make all the snide right wing jokes you want, he's been doing 1 or 2 tours a year for quite a long time now (either comedy or political) and he sells out multiple nights in some really big metro cities for $25-$75 a ticket.

He is a decent guy with a good family just like most of us out here... people are so small minded to let their political views skew their views of a "person". I think Bill Maher is a whiny vegetarian, liberal nutcase from a political standpoint but I get why people like him and he's talented and funny... It would be awesome if some people on the left were (actually) as open and non-judgmental as they ALWAYS claim to be.

Hannah Montana was the top money grossing film this weekend. Your point? There are a lot of stupid people in this country.

In every political post, whether it is benign like this one or more serious fare from the left or right, the argument is never sensible. It devolves into name calling. Neither side is tolerant of the other. Ever. The left blames the right. The right blames the left. Each side is hypocritical. Our representatives are screwing each and every one of us. Left or right. It is no wonder that the nation is as divided as we are. I guess if nothing else we will all be united as we continue to circle the bowl.

When I went here...

http://www.nationalpriorities.org/costofwar_home

the running counter to the right was under 613,000,000...thats 613 billion dollars... the article says

To date, $656.1 billion dollars have been allocated to the war in Iraq. The national, state, and local numbers we provide are based on the full amount of funding approved to date for Fiscal Year 2009.

Now Obama spent 800 billion to a trillion dollars on 1 bill and there have been others... and yes there will be more. But Obama out spent the Iraq war already...maybe even double.
