Oh joy: more reality shows and makeover shows coming to TV Land

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 13th 2009 7:19PM
TV LandTV Land just keeps drifting further and further away from what they originally were. It wouldn't surprise me if some day we see them change the name to Reality Land and all of the older comedies and dramas dragged over to Nick at Nite.

The network has announced a few new reality shows, including one that they call an "anti-makeover" show. If it's truly anti-makeover, it will be a scripted comedy, but I'm sure it's really just another damn reality program. They have also announced a third season (gah) of High School Reunion. Guess all the people in their 40s and 50s like these things, though as someone in my 40s I'd just like to say HEY, YOU KNOW WHAT, TV LAND? I DON'T WANT TO SEE MORE REALITY SHOWS AND MAKEOVER SHOWS, EVEN IF THEY ARE "ANTI."

Of course, maybe I'm in the minority here. TV Land seems to be doing well with the reality shows. She's Got The Look 2 is coming soon, they just ended another season of the above-mentioned High School Reunion (a show where just the title makes me cringe), and this week we'll see the debut of The Cougar, a reality show where a fortysomething will embarrass herself in front of America by having hot tub sex with guys old enough to be dating her daughter.

If it wasn't for The Andy Griffith Show I wouldn't watch TV Land at all. Is it just me? The TV Land Awards are coming soon. At the rate the network is going, changing their programming from boomer TV shows to reality shows and movies, what shows and people will win TV Land trophies in 4 or 5 years? The star of The Cougar 4?

I'm really starting to not like TV Land as well. The only thing that even slightly redeems it, is that they sometimes play 3rd Rock From the Sun. But this reality stuff needs to go! It'd also be nice if they started playing more classic television - maybe expand their show list a bit even. The only thing that irritates me more than TV Land, is how bad Nick at Nite has gotten. I just wrote a post on it actually. If anyone wants to - you can check it out here:

I fully agree. I hate these reality shows. It was great when TV Land aired the Sonny & Cher show and Flip Wilson. Those were the days. I'd love to see shows like Love, American Style and even the Donny and Marie Show. D&M were so big when I was a kid. It was the only thing that could make us rowdy kids drop what we were doing and go inside the house without being threatened with a spanking. There are so many shows that TV Land could air instead of producing all these reality shows. They were supposed to be our "oasis" from the storm of reality shows every other network was embracing. Now, they're just as bad. I now watch them ONLY for The Andy Griffith Show.

I never thought I'd say this but I hate TV Land now and years ago (yes, years ago) I used to love it to pieces. That was back when their schedule was filled with "MTM," "I Love Lucy," "Gilligan's Island," "Bewitched," "Rhoda," and other gems from TV's past. Now it's nothing but reality shows and one or two reruns of "Andy Griffith" and "Brady Bunch" thrown in to break up the monotony.

I really miss the TV Land of old.

Thank God for Amazon,Hulu,DVD,Netflix & iTunes! I rent, buy what I want to watch, when I want. I'll just keep the minimum needed of DIRECTV for Football, Basketball & CNN.

Man...SciFy or whatever it is now, will not have many left to choose from to fill their schedule if TVLand keeps hoggin them.

God...I miss the Mr Ed, Emergency!, Dragnet, Barney Miller, Gilligans Isle, Bewitched, Father Knows Best, Dobie Gillis, My Three Sons .... TVLand of old.

Is it just me or have we gone from having 50 different THEME channels on cable to 50 copies of the same stupid reality rerun stations?

Or 10 channels all showing the same repeats of Law & Order, NCIS, Frasier and CSI.

I'd rather watch the ColonBlow infomercials!

I remember when at 8PM Nickelodeon became Nick at Nite and aired shows that were actually classic television, like I Love Lucy. Now that TV Land is it's own network, they can't even stick to showing classic shows. Quite sad.
