Harper's Island moving to Saturday night

Harper's IslandOh, fans of this show are going to be ticked.

CBS is moving their new murder-mystery series Harper's Island to Saturday nights. Guess the ratings just weren't what the network wanted, so starting next week the show will air on the night of reruns and movies. But don't worry that this is a sign that the show will vanish from the schedule altogether. This was created as a limited-run series and CBS says they'll show all of the episodes, just on another night (though I wouldn't bet on a second season).

I know what these networks are doing. It's all part of their master plan to make Saturday nights a "must-see" night of television again, an attempt to recapture of the glory years of shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Carol Burnett Show, and The Bob Newhart Show. Someday all of the best show will be on Saturday nights and we'll be home in our Slankets watching them.

I started checking out this limited run series based on the high praise that TV Squad gave the pilot. But to be honest (and I know there's always a difference of opinion), I'm unimpressed and disappointed.

The whole production, and the actors, feel like they are from a daytime soap opera. After watching the first three episodes, I'm still unsure whether this soap opera feel is intentional or just evidence of bad acting and bad writing.

I know I'm coming across as harsh when I state flat-out -- this show is pretty terrible. But I'll go ahead and keep up with it to see how it plays to the end. For all the wrong reasons, I want to see all the characters get killed off in horrible ways.

Agree! I was looking forward to a nice little mystery, wrapped up in 13? episodes.

It's turned out to be poorly acted and unsuspenseful.

Besides TV Squad's high recommendation, I decided to check Harper's Island out because one of its producers also produced Jericho, a series which I generally enjoyed.

Now, I just wish the killings on this show would come faster and more frequently. It feels like it's taking FOREVER for these awful, unlikeable, generic characters to get murdered off. (And, in this week's episode, will they finally start finding the other corpses of those already murdered in the prior episodes? It also seems it's taking forever for the characters to learn that there's a killer among them!)

At this point, I want more killing and less soap on this series. Otherwise, the next 10 episodes are going to feel very stretched out.

Sorry but I fail to see the point of shows like this on network TV. Good horror is either sharp, well written suspense, heart beating out of your chest kind (rare to be sure) or the teenagers running, screaming, bleeding and skinny dipping.

Network TV almost always has to water down (and dumb down) programs like this - so move it to AMC or Showtime.
