What's the deal with Guiding Light and Universal Studios?

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 27th 2009 8:00PM
Guiding Light logoIf you're a fan of Guiding Light (now in its final six months on the air), you probably saw Bill and Lizzie running around Universal Studios in Florida today.

They were going on the various rides, eating giant chicken legs, squirting each other with big water guns, and shooting colored balls at each other, all the while holding hands and getting all kissy (I swear there was even a scene of them getting their pictures taken in one of those photo booths).

What is this big promotion that the show and CBS is doing for Universal Studios?

First of all, the theme park is owned by NBC Universal, so it's interesting to see it promoted so heavily on CBS. It's not that TV shows don't go on location and plug things. It happens all the time, though not usually something that another network owns. But my biggest problem with the stunt is how the writers are handling it. The reasons for the on-location filming are flimsy at best. OK, so let's just say that Bill decided to take Lizzie to Universal to give her the childhood she never had (of course she never had a childhood - she aged about 5 years in about one month like all soap kids do), why the hell is the rest of the Spaulding family going down there?

There was a scene in today's episode where Alan Spaulding was looking at his cell phone and reading off everything there was to do at Universal Studios in an attempt to get his grandson James (who's around 20, even though he was born in 2000) to go down with him and rescue Lizzie before she's too influenced by Bill, or something. Here is this evil genius/respected businessman looking into his cell phone and saying dialogue like, "We have to go down to Universal Studios and watch out for Lizzie and make sure she's OK. Now, if we go down to Universal Studios, which has some terrific food and an amazing array of cartoon characters that you can interact with, not to mention some fabulous rides and other attractions, we have to make sure that we keep Lizzie away from Bill or it will tear this family apart." It was so unnatural it was almost surreal.

As I was saying to my co-workers the other day at a TV Squad staff meeting, where we had not one but four different flavors of Pepsi, including their new Throwback flavor that uses real sugar and not high fructose corn syrup, which really does make the soda taste a lot different - Pepsi, Refresh Everything! - it's really odd when a product placement is so obvious and out of the ordinary.

Maybe CBS can keep the show on the air by having it all filmed on location at Universal from now on. Imagine the plot ideas!

Like most other fans of GL, I too am actually enjoying the Universal scenes with Bill and Lizzie. Having Alan drag the rest of the Spauldings down there is just gravy!!! That is what makes the storyline perfect...it is off the wall...just like Alan! The writers/producers of GL have a knack for subtle (and not so subtle) humor! I don't mind GL filming at "Universal" or any of the product placement. In fact, I would rather have product placement in my shows as opposed to some generic looking can of pop with no label on it at all, or a cereal box / bag of chips that seems to be spelled incorrectly. (I find that so distracting). GL is working with a minimal budget and doing a fantastic job! The acting has been breath-taking, the storylines superb, and all around the show has been "must-see" every day. Glancing at one random day from the Universal Scenes may seem out of place if you have not been watching the show, but for those of us that have been...it fits perfectly!!! Just like the products you see in the background...

In my opinion, I feel as though Ellen Wheller has done a near to impossible job where Guiding Light is concerned. She has had little to no budget to work with and yet she continues to make miracles happen. Jill Lorie Hurst is writing her little heart out and the storylines are just great! The Universal Studios scenes have been light and fun! Bill and Lizzie are having fun. Lots of people go to Orlando without their children so that they can just play and forget about the stress of the real world, if only for a short time! Kudos for Guiding Light! And kudos for P&G. I found myself at the corner store ths weekend buying a can of pringles. The product placements actually work for me!

I actually liked the idea, no matter the reason. daytime has to face low budget, and if they can manage to give us a week of fun, saving/earning money at the same time ..it's a win win.
Long life to Guiding Light

Gl is years ahead of the other soaps as far as having to face the new realities of soap viewership, production costs, and advertising products. As is its pioneering way, GL is entering the new era of daytime drama by placing advertising within its show. Though as has been pointed out, this type of advertising is a throwback to original soaps and is being used regularly on prime-time shows.

All the other soaps are going to face the problems that GL has been dealing with these last few years.

GL will be thriving in its new home on cable and/or the internet when the other soaps will be in the process of being decimated by their networks. It is so fortunate for GL that it is not owned by CBS and has P&G working to place it in a new home in September.

I love, love, love the Universal location and GL's production model. It is refreshing to see our favorite characters outside of Springfield. The actors also appear to have an extra spring in their step filming on location. And Bill and Lizzie have made me laugh so much that my belly hurts this week. GL has done a great job with their new production model and with the budget cuts. GL has more flexibility than most soaps because they can fly out the actors and film anywhere. And product placements are a norm and are expected in television. Go to the movies or watch primtime/cable this week and you'll be filled with them. I have no problem with the product placements, and BTW, half of my items in my house are P&G products. Guiding Light is a soap, it is a business, and I applaud them for making the best out of what they have. Like all Amercians, we are all trying to make the best out of what we have in this economy. This makes me love GL even more. And kudos to Ellen Wheeler for an outstanding job!!

Ellen Wheeler's achievements at GL over the last year have been nothing short of miraculous. When dealing with a decimated budget, she took the most elemental aspect of the soap-o-sphere, the characters, and began stretching their limits, creating character driven plots and exploring new landscapes!

The Universal Studios shoot has been a lot of fun! I love that the new production model is getting us out into the world, rather than trying to pretend that they are still delivering a three camera universe!

I applaud Ellen Wheeler and the writers at Guiding Light. Despite the obstacles thrown at them by CBS they still produce the best daytime drama on the air.
I love the Universal shoot. The writing has been so angsty good on GL as of late that I really needed a little fun. Thanks GL for the well written, beautifully produced show that I can't get enough of!!

If product placement can help soaps survive, then I say go for it. Certainly prime time shows are moving more and more to that model. In this day and age, we will take what we can get just so our favorites stay on the air.

And so what if Bizzie and the Spauldings go to Universal? Can't soaps have a little fun for once instead of all the angst all the time! Its cute seeing the couple just be together before they get hit with something bad again. And Alan getting soaked by a ride?? Come on, that is freakin' hilarious!!

And as the actors said in interviews, it was nice to get out of freezing NJ for a chance to film in sunny Orlando. So let them enjoy themselves, they deserve it! And they held the fan event down there at the same time, which was a blast for fans, plus it got Guiding Light name out in the press!!

And its refreshing to watch shows where its sunny and warm instead of seeing everyone with their puffy coats and pink noses!

As for Ellen Wheeler, bless her for caring so much about the show! She did the best with what she was given. I don't think she chose to slash the budget. And the writing and camera work have all improved immensely! Otalia is the best written story currently on the air! Ellen is due big props for allowing it to grow as slowly and carefully as it has, and it has paid off in spades! They are the Super Couple of today!

Ellen Wheeler has the unenviable job of having to do the best with what she has due to CBS's constant demand to slash the budget. The heavily-criticized production model is working now. Yes, it was buggy and hard to adjust to, but now I love the realism and intimacy it provides rather than the staged, standard three-camera format. The shoot at Universal isn't jarring to me at all, considering that the show shoots so many exteriors in Peapack.

And for the record, this isn't the show's "last six months on the air". It's run on CBS ends on September 18th. That's all. Since P&G owns this show, they can take it somewhere else and that's exactly what they're trying to do. Guiding Light isn't dead yet.

I happen to believe Ellen Wheeler and the writers at Guiding Light have been doing a wonderful job with all the storylines. They should be given credit for bringing the show back to the quality of writing and acting that we had come to expect from Guiding Light. As for the Universal Studios scenes - have you got a problem with showing honest, clean fun on a soap opera? I think it's all been very charming to watch and look forward to the rest of the episodes filmed at Universal.
