Adam gets an American Idol wake-up call

adam hairdoWhen Ryan Seacrest did the results from the voting last night on American Idol and put Adam Lambert in the bottom three, my reaction was like Kara's. It was a jaw-dropper. How was it possible that Adam, who's been flying through week after week and has been wowing the judges, was suddenly on the short end of the votes? Being just a tad suspicious, my first thought was that the producers had manipulated the votes or something to make it more dramatic.

And it was! Not only was Adam in the bottom group, so was Kris and Matt. I expected Matt to be there because he's been hanging by a thread for weeks, ever since the judges used their new rule -- the Judges' Save -- to keep him in the competition. So, Matt made sense. Kris was quickly moved to the top group, so sweating over him wasn't in the cards.

That brings it back to Adam. What was really going on? Well, here's my theory. Adam went to the well once too often with the outre rock stylings. The show a salute to Rat Pack era music, standards and classics from the likes of composers George Gershwin ("Someone To Watch Over Me"), Harold Arlen ("Come Rain or Come Shine") and Rodgers & Hart ("My Funny Valentine"). Even Kris's choice was an Oscar-winning ballad from the 1936 Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers movie Swingtime, "Just the Way You Look Tonight." All those songs were familiar and comfortable.

Instead of singing something from the '30s or '40s, Adam chose "Feeling Good." On the surface, it seemed like a standard, but it's a Broadway song. It's from The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newly. That was a hit in 1965. Anthony Newly, a very over-the-top singer in his time, made it a minor hit. Others have followed.

But even Randy recognized the theatrical nature of the song, calling it too Broadway. Adam's take on the song was his dramatic rock style and it came off as an imitation of Adam. It was like watching Adam do an impression of Adam. He's becoming a caricature of himself and that's not a good thing.

But it is a good thing for Adam and his fans that this happened now. This can be a wake-up call for Adam. Next week, when they sing rock 'n roll, Adam should do traditional rock. Maybe Buddy Holly or Elvis. Stay away from Freddie Mercury and Kiss.

Go mainstream, Adam, and course correct while you're still in the race. It's like politics, run to the middle to consolidate your power. Everyone knows you can do the wild stuff; now show us you can do the quiet stuff, too.

If you change the angle a little bit-he was thirdbest and not secondworse!(A.I.may play around with the bottom 3 I heard..artistic creativity..)
But still not the spot he deserves.

End of the song:VOTE FOR ADAM if you think he s Number 1!!!

from the first time I hear Adam sing and was selected to go to Hollywood, I knew he would be the season 8 winner. I originally picked a girl for 2nd place. but she has been tossed already. Danny was my next choice for the #2 spot when it got down to the top 10. but Allison
has grown by leaps and bounds with stage presence.
they all can sing.......duh.... or they wouldnt be on stage now. so now we also have to look at who grabs your heart, your mind and MAKES you want to listen to them and watch thier every move....make s you afraid to go to the bathroom or kitchen for fear you'll miss something
. it sure as heck isnt Danny or Chris. to all of you who complain about Adams screaming........he's not screaming , you uneducated idiotts. he is hitting those high notes with ease. take Whitney Houston, C. Dion I guess you think they SCREAM when they hit those high notes that they are so famous for? no, and Adam doesnt either.

I know that it's true that "Feeling Good' was a show tune first. But Nina Simone was involved in either writing or performing it. Does anyone know how she was involved?

Also, that song qualified as a "Rat Pack" because it was also sung (Really great IMO) by Sammy Davis Jr. I remembered the song from probably the '60's which prompted me to check it out on itunes. I bought the singles by S. Davis and Adam and think they're each special but different.

BTW I'm an Adam fan all the way. He is too talented in every way to fall by the wayside. I like all the remaining 4 this year, but I think he can be a superstar if his career is handled right. I'm a big music-lover since the late '50's and I've known every song he has done on Idol and IMO he has performed them all beautifully, even "Ring Of Fire." I've always been a big fan of Johnny Cash songs but I really liked Adam's creation too. It was not even the same song but probably qualified in the country genre because of it's derivation. "R.O.F." was, for me, his finest because his performance showed his true vocal range for the first time. Even though I had been watching him since his audition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" the rendition of "R.O.F." truly confirmed his talent for me.

Allison DOES have experience. In fact she won a Telemundo singing competition in 2006 where she won $50,000 and a recording contract (that she did not chose to take). I like Allison and hope that there will be an Adam/Allison final but I'm tired of everyone saying what an unfair advantage Adam has because he's been in a few musicals. Give me a break! Also, his studio recordings are incredible so those people who say he's a great performer but won't do well in the studio, I don't agree and neither does his buying public since he's leading AI Itunes downloads. He has incredible talent. I'm also not a teen but a 49 year old professional woman who loves music and I will vote for 2 hours solid for Adam.

I would like to say that Adam is by far the most talented singer I have ever seen on American Idol. My heart sank when he was in the bottom 3 let alone the bottom 2!! I thought something was fishy since American Idol likes to do this stuff all the time and the fact that Paula who gushes over Adam seemed calm and smiling...hmmm.. makes you wonder. Anyway I tried to vote for him but the lines were constantly busy also I just moved to New York from Oregon and have 503 area code, does that matter in my voting?? I need some advice here because I will not watch the show anymore if Adam is voted off!!

Adam fans: If you don't already have an AT&T cell phone, you can buy a Go Phone and text vote all night for him. Every text vote counts; no "busy" signals. I'm buying one tomorrow (it's $20- worth saving Adam for!) plus I'll be dial-voting using 2 phones like i usually do every week. Please don't split your votes- just vote for ADAM ONLY. Spread the word. Some fans are having Voting/Pizza parties on Tuesday night where everyone brings their cell phones and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. Adam is SO WORTH THIS, he's the BEST contestant Idol ever had (IMO). :)

I truly believe in Adam - I think he will continue to give us good music, and I know my votes will not go in vain. You can tell that he would be successful in his career he is only waiting to win the AI competition to prove himself as a true artist - new era Elvis. Some of the previous Idol contestants from the previous seasons are not very successful and they all have the same opportunities - I can't quite figure out if they were not reaching for the stars or they just became complacent - I am talking about for example Fantasia Barrino, on her season of contestants she had deserved to win - but what has she done lately, or what has she ever done with her title. She seemed to have regressed - that's a waste of talent and very sad. Even Taylor Hicks seems like a loser. I believe the contestants the top 13 will do well, we might hear more from this group than any of the others.

I just don't see the draw to Adam. His voice is stuck in that horrible pitch. He can't sing a song without screeching somewhere in the song. The guy can sing alright, I just don't like it. The other 3 contestants are way more mainstream, and current than Adam could ever be.
Hopfully Adam is next to go.

Adam needs to keep that lizard looking tongue in. He has a great voice but the screaming is a bit much for me. The song he picked wasn't recognizable by most people watching. He would have been appreciated more if he had done a song that we could have related too. I believe he has a big EGO. He doesn't seem very appreciative or humble. He isn't the only great singer on the stage. He could use some humble pie. He will most likely win and he would be rightfully deserving but I'm not sure I like him enough to buy anything he put out.
