Southland: Sally in the Alley - open thread

Southland

I think I'd like Southland a lot more if it just focused on the cops played by Ben McKenzie and Michael Cudlitz. I find myself getting less interested when they cut away from what they're doing. I think Southland should be like a fictional version of Cops, showing the two cops inside the car talking and then going to various calls during the hour. I know, you're thinking, that's just Adam-12. But I really liked Adam-12!

"Southland" is competently made; the acting, writing and direction are all reasonably solid by the standard of current prime time network TV dramas. (However, I do agree that a real-life detective in the same circumstances as Regina King's character likely would be a lot more jaded and cynical.)

Still, it feels like a hash of reheated leftovers from "The Shield" (without the dirty-cop aspects of Vic Mackie and crew, which generally were the most interesting parts of that show) and "Boomtown" (without that show's gimmick of depicting the same events several times from multiple characters' points of view).

It's not a bad program, by any means, but I'm just not seeing what about its supposed to stand out among the many other cop shows already on the air.

I missed Ben a little, because he looks so damn f***able in that uniform. I'm not sure whether we should attribute the impossibly good fit to the fact that he lives in TV-land, or are we to infer that "Richie Rich" gets his uniforms tailored instead of wearing them off the rack?

I do like Bryant and Moretta, although I hope the giant dog kills and eats Bryant's stupid wife.

I agree with Jophiel. I think this is the strongest episode so far. I love the series overall so far.

Amen, Regina King's character is sooo unrealistic it's not even funny. Most detectives/officers at that point would not be so bleeding heart. She did get points when it came to that reporter bit last night...but yeah, more of the uniformed patrol guys and their calls.

I still miss High Incident.

I'm really on the fence with this show. It still feels like a wanna-be Shield that's trying way too hard- bleeping fake profanity does not equal edgy cred.. I hope it gets better. With the Shield and Wire gone there is a void to be filled.
