American Idol: 1 of 4 goes home

Paula Abdul performs on American Idol

Yet another results show has come around, and Ryan starts things off by asking, "Who will graduate from the Idol school of rock, and who will just get schooled?" You know, Ryan, I'm available if your writers are on strike. Call me.

Anyway, sounds like it was a dramatic week on American Idol - a large column collapsed and in a separate incident, a staffer was injured on a stair mishap. Whew. But the show must go on, and we'll find out tonight whether Allison, Danny, Adam or Kris will be going home. The other three get to go home, too, but for a big hometown parade with cheerleaders and town leaders gushing praise on them.

Ryan tells us that more than 64 million votes were registered last night, which is the highest tally outside of a finale. And, say what? Paula will be taking the stage? And what is up with her boobs lately? They seem to be hanging out all over the place. I think they actually have their own zip code now.

Anyhoo ... the Ford commercial is interesting, with the four Idols jumping out of newspapers and billboards like they're in a Charles Schwab commercial or something.

Then Slash (lose the hat, Slash; we're over it) takes the stage with his band and the Idols, all doing a rockin' version (is there any other kind?) of Alice Cooper's "School's Out For Summer." After the song, Ryan talks to Slash, who says it's nice to see rock being done by people who can sing. Ok, whatever.

Ryan then talks to the Idols, and Kris calls the whole experience surreal, while Simon counters with, "Kris, we don't want humble anymore." Really, Simon? I like humble. You should try it sometime. Adam says he had a blast with his song last night, and he loved his outfit. Danny says that his own aunt muted the TV during his song. Apparently, his screamer note is being made into a ring-tone.

Paula did indeed take the stage (with a bunch of hot guy dancers), singing "I'm Just Here For the Music." I'm sure it's all lip-synched, because I can't imagine Paula singing while being thrown around the stage by her dancers. Anyway, fun performance and she looks great.

Then "No Doubt" performs "Just a Girl," with Gwen Stefani channeling Cyndi Lauper and The Pretenders. Gwen basically says she's tired of staying home and having babies, and wants to go on tour again.

Finally, the reason we all tuned in -- the results -- gets underway. Ryan immediately sends humble Kris back to safety, and he's completely overwhelmed as he staggers back to the chairs.

Then, enough of the results! Time for another performance -- this time with Chris Daughtry singing "No Surprise." We also get to see a little video synopsis of Chris getting booted off Idol three years ago, leaving Katharine McPhee (who?) as the winner. Then Kris Allen hauls out a big plaque showing that Daughtry's debut album sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. Woohoo, sometimes Idol losers do better than the winners!

Ok, back to the reason we're all here -- the results. Ryan sends Adam back to the chairs, and I bet Adam is secretly hoping he doesn't win. I'm sure he'll have a much better career as a loser. Then we learn that Danny is safe, and Allison will be going home. She sings "Cry Baby" again, and the judges and audience pretty much burst into tears at Allison's awesomeness.

Next week, the Top 3 each sing two songs -- a judges choice and their own personal pick.

So what do you guys think? Did the right person go home?

I wonder if Danny is getting sympathy votes. He's a boring singer, after singing Dream On, He should of walked on!!!! God, I can only hope Steven Tyler wasn't watching!!!

My vote, I'm jumping on the Adam Lambert wagon!!! GOOOOOOOO ADAM!!!

I found Cowell's antagonism to Allison most foul and hypocritical . She has a raging authentic talent . Her
future is unlimited - she could easily become a great,
great singer .

Ironic that she was criticized on a basis of personality - her stage presence in Papa Was a Rolling Stone was amazing . All of her performances had subtle and amplifying gestures . Curls and intonation in her voice perfectly timed .

The fix was in . Adam is great - but I think Alison is greater . Her parting performance showed how much she wanted it - and to perform at that level when in tears - I think that tells something -- many before her have not been able to rise to the occasion .

Having a preferance for rock music, I feel that if you can't find a rock song that suits you and you can't do a decent job with it, you don't deserve to be an American Idol. People with terrible voices have become stars in the rock music world. I think that thought pretty much eliminated Danny and Kris for me.

Wow I can't beleive the hype about Allison leaving! I mean you American Idol fans in the USA have continually got it wrong (we Aussies aren't that much better). For once pick a singer who has the chops, the performance, the stage presence and the ability to make a magnificent career in the music business. Allison is only 17 and should, with the right guidance and songs, have a great career. Kris is far too run of the mill and while Danny Gokey has a great voice, I don't think he has much stage presence. Adam has everything. Love him or hate him, he is the best thing that has come out of the Idol ranks for a long, long time. If you want to know who has the ability to be a big international music performer, then he is it! Yes the USA is a big arena for any upcoming artist, but to conquer the world stage, now that is something that only a few from Amercian Idol have acheived, Kelly Clarkson, Daughty and Jennifer Hudson (and the last 2 didn't even win!). The others have all paled into nothingness outside the USA. Yes Carrie Underwood is huge in the USA, but no-where else. So please USA get it right. But then again, if Adam doesn't win, it might be a good thing...For those who won't watch Idol because Allison left....hey you guys voted or didn't vote....

With four contestants left, shouldn't the show only be a half hour at this point ?! Seriously, I think only 10-minutes were devoted to the competition, the rest was guest performances. Either way, it still only takes me 5-mins to watch the essentials off the DVR.

It seems as though your program has turned into a popularity contest as opposed to talent. Last year after Michael Johns was sent home I quit watching the program. Now I'm on the verge of doing it again after Allison was given her walking papers. By far Allison and Adam should be in the final two. I'm not saying the others don't have talent, because they do, but the best talent this year is definetly Adam and Allison. The program has to come up with a better voting system

Scott - I was just about to write something about reviews and opinions, but Jimmy beat me to it. Thanks, Jimmy!

But if anyone really *isn't interested in our opinions, then you should probably look elsewhere for TV news and views. TV Squad is pretty much all about our opinions and commentary.

That said, I *was in a snarky mood last night and figured someone would probably call me on it. (But I still want Slash to lose the stupid hat and Paula to tuck her breasts in now and then.) :-)

annoying things on Idol at this point in the season

* Adam is not a "rock god" as Kara proclaimed him. Not even close. No matter what he sings, it is all starting to sound alike. Wash off all the eyeliner, stand still and sing a ballad .. truly SING it, not shout and screech it.. maybe then I'll believe.

* Can you imagine listening to an entire CD of Adam screeching? I sure can't! If he wants to win Idol? Give us ONE WHOLE SONG without that upper range "someone stepped on my cat" style singing ... then I would vote for you.

* the judges proclaimed Adam the winner in the first few weeks of the season, and have skewed their comments throughout the rest of the season to prove it.

* Paula's "singing" Wednesday night ... could we over-synthesize it just a little more please? And the outfit? Sure she has a decent body and can still move .. but honey, you're a little too old.

Seeing and hearing Daughtry on Idol last night just made it all the clearer what a rocker is. Adam is glam-rock... and his 'super-nova" star will burn bright and burn out fast. He lacks the staying power.

And next week I'd put money on him singing Aerosmith, Rolling Stones and/or Queen ... how appropriate.

I'm tired of the Adam screeching comments. He has sung plenty on this show. People just latch on to a criticism and keep repeating it even when it isn't valid.

I think Paula looks great, but her movements were clearly those of an older woman vs. a young dancer. They just weren't as strong, as crisp and FULL as her earlier clips and to me it highlighted her age. I also hate that synthesized voice thing, but I have a soft spot for Paula so I still enjoyed it.

I was impressed by Paula's performance. I'm sure it was lip-synched, but the girl can dance, and the song is actually catchy. Slash was awesome. And I love the hat. It's his signature. Slash without his hat is like Keith Richards without a cigarette dangling from his lips.
I was sorry to see Alison go. She's far more talented than Gokey. I've been over that guy for several weeks now. But Adam's has this competition in the bag anyway, so now it's just a matter of who will be joining him in the finals.
Having said all of that... I don't know who wrote this TVSquad Review, but can't they find somebody less sarcastic, less snarky who seems to actually enjoy watching the show to write the reviews? Every little nuance elicitcs a snitty dig (Ryan's writers, Simon's advice, Paula's Breasts, Slash's hat and comments that it's nice to hear rock being done by people who can sing). Drop the negativity and sarcasm, and just write a well-crafted, interesting review of the show. Nobody's interested in your opinion. :)
Thanks for listening.

> "Just write a well-crafted, interesting review of the show. Nobody's interested in your opinion."

A review is, by definition, the writer's opinion.

If anything, Jane's reviews could be *more* opinionated!
