Dollhouse: Omega (season finale)

Dollhouse(S01E12) I'm not sure if I should label this one the series finale, but I live in hope. In any case, it was an excellent episode and gives some sense of closure to the series, yet allows for a continuation of the story should it be picked up. And there is the unaired episode "Epitaph One," which hopefully will be included in the DVD set.

This episode was rife with characterization and philosophical debate, two strengths of Joss and his minions. Echo even brought up the simple fact that many viewers have been saying all along: "you can't sign a contract to be a slave."

Those of you who deduced that Doctor Saunders was a Doll: congratulations. You were correct. I wonder what this means for Victor's future since he is another broken Doll.

The episode was concentrated on Alpha's backstory. I have to wonder: once the technology behind the Dollhouse was perfected, why keep a convict on staff? I guess Adelle figured his brain had been rebooted so many times that it was safe. That only works if the virus is in the operating system and not the BIOS.

Joss and company also used the quick-cut "crazy" filming technique to represent insanity in the last episode of Firefly (which was never even broadcast during that series' initial run). At least they're consistent.

I'm so glad Fox showed all the episodes in the correct order. It made it easier to pick up on the recurring themes and motifs of the show and made it much more enjoyable. Notice that Victor's feelings towards Sierra were similar to Alpha's feelings toward Echo, but not as twisted. The fundamental philosophy was that people had a core being (call it a soul) that goes beyond memory. I can only hope that Fox is waiting to see how DVD sales go before making a final decision on a Season Two.

I liked the fake-out at the end where you were supposed to think for a moment that Ballard was agreeing to work for the Dollhouse in exchange for Echo's freedom, but the freed Active ended up being Mellie/November/Madeline. I do wonder if the series continues if Ballard will become Echo's handler, given his protective feelings toward Caroline.

Sierra's appearance in the episode bordered on a cameo. The same can be said for Mark Sheppard in his FBI role. I had thought more would come of his character.

Considering Alpha's ability to put together imprinting equipment in that power station, I wonder if future seasons would deal with the theme of "back-alley imprinting"? Surely there must be geniuses out there that don't work for one of the Dollhouses.

Why would anybody hire a pair of Dolls to go on a cross-country crime spree? It takes all kinds.

Why did Echo touch Topher's heart at the end? I didn't understand the point of that gesture. Was she forgiving him? Was she making an observation of some sort of burden on his heart?

While the series wasn't as good as Whedon's previous ones, I still thought it was better than most of the stuff on TV nowadays and am hoping for a second season pick-up. I plan to rewatch this season to pick up on all the nuances I didn't catch when I didn't know where they were going with the story.

So, what did you think of the series? Do you think you'll buy the DVD?

"Why did Echo touch Topher's heart at the end?"

I would think it would be to refer back to "True Believer" where she did the same thing to one of the cult members. Despite Topher's seemingly nonchalant attitude towards the dolls he had a sadness about him after the wipes, and especially after his last interaction with Saunders. So, yes, Echo recognized Topher's burden by putting her hand over his heart, but that scene also served to reveal that she still remembers something, which they reinforced soon after when she whispered her real name.

And did I really read at io9 and Whedonesque that Dollhouse has been un-canceled? Yay! It seems that Fox thinks they can make money with it, but it's got some changes coming: regular commercial breaks (same for Fringe) so six minutes less show, a shift in creative direction, and a slashed budget. Still mostly likely on Friday, though.

I've read a lot of comments, on several boards, about Eliza Dushku's "limited" acting capabilities. I don't buy it. While watching the finale, I kept thinking, "are they crazy?" I thought ED sold her performance throughout the episode.

This reminds me of all of the Enterprise and Voyager critics who trashed both shows while watching EVERY single episode. I didn't get it then either.

I want Dollhouse back, and so do many viewers--oddly even those who seem to think ED is a bad actress. What are you watching for, if you think the lead actress is so bad?

The show has an interesting premise, lots of ethical questions that are being raised, but not addressed yet, and some well set up mysteries. Its a tease and I for one am hooked. So I am willing to bear through ED's inability to act, through all the pointless gratuitous skin, to see how this develops. Will I miss this show if it gets cancelled? A little bit, but not terribly. I thought TSCC had much more going for it (the cast *could* act) and I would miss that show more.

Reading through the comments i'm shocked how few people were bothered by the absolute ordinariness of Alpha's goals. There was no reason for Alpha's threadbare plan to take this long. Really, I'm totally disappointed in how generic this episode was after we were led to believe Alpha was some kind of dark, bad ass force... not a guy bickering with himself in a lame lair.

1. Won't buy the DVDs. No more DVD buying as I never rewatch anything.

2. The series was interesting until this last episode. Omega = epic fail. There was nothing interesting or suspenseful about it. After last week's episode I expected more than... "I'm an evil genius and you will be my sidekick."

I was disappointed that they made Alpha crazy-he was much more interesting when his agenda was unknown. Making him crazy was just so ordinary. It would have also been much more interesting if they kept the new "Caroline" alive, searching with Echo for Alpha.

And about Dr Saunders knowing about Whiskey's past, wouldn't the original Dr Saunders have already known it as her doctor? And when his imprint was put into Whiskey, she would know it as well. And maybe she hates Topher simply because Topher put Dr Saunders into a woman.

I liked it if only the early episodes had been of this calibur we probably wouldnt be wondering if dollhouse is going to get picked up for another season. one thing that DH does do well is the fight scenes. that scene between ballard, echo, and boyd in the episode before this was great, and the ones in the episodes before it was excellent as well. I think maybe if the show comes back next year Boyd could go back to being echo's handler and they can imprint Victor to be the new head of security since he is a "broken doll". I also think it will be real interesting to see ballard's role in the dollhouse if the show comes back. If next season provides great episodes like these past few consistently I really hope it comes back season. but if they give us another uneven season with crappy one shot episodes I can't say I would miss it.

After watching the show I'm wondering if Dr Saunders/Whiskey whatever was perhaps Topher's sister? They've kind of had the brother/sister hate relationship and when she asked him why he made her hate him so much, perhaps it was Topher's way of somehow keeping that bond? But after the whole Alpha escapade at the Dollhouse she still went to Topher. Maybe because although they aren't the best of friends she feels that connection to him?

This episode of "DollHouse" was the best one to date. It would be terrible if Fox doesn't renew this series. This finale could be one of my favorite episodes off any Whedon series. The whole series seemed to be elements of "Blade Runner" and "Blue Velvet". That opening when they play Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" where Alpha was torturing the woman had to be a BV shout out. I loved the reveal that the dancing woman was Saunders and not Echo. And by getting rid of Mircle Laurie it perhaps allows Amy Acker's doll to have more screentime in future episodes.
