SNL to broadcast short films special

Andy SambergDo you remember the short films that SNL broadcast through the years? It started, I think, with Mr. Bill during the Not Ready For Prime-Time Players era and currently involves the Lonely Island songs. This could explain why SNL has chosen Lonely Island and SNL member Andy Samberg to host a special broadcast of the SNL short films on May 17 at 9PM.

I'm not sure which short is my favorite. There was an old one involving children's addiction to arcade video games and a doctor would use shock therapy via a Ms. Pac Man joystick to keep kids away from them. Eddie Murphy's "White Like Me" sketch is a classic. But I was laughing just as hard at the concept of Natalie Portman as a gangster rapper. Sadly, I wasn't as impressed by "Lazy Sunday" as apparently the rest of the Internet community.

So which SNL short film was your favorite?

my favorite has to be the syncronized swimmers...it may be one of the funniest moments in SNL history and really se up the whole Chrisopher Guest "mockumentary" style he used in Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind...classic!

I'm partial to some of the non-song Lonely Island shorts, like Andy Punching, the one where Jonah Hill is in love with Andy's dad, and even Laser Cats. Eddie Murphy going undercover as a while man was brilliant. I'm not as familiar with Albert Brooks' old short films on SNL, but I'm looking forward to seeing at least one of them represented in this special.

Kudos for recognizing at least one thing Brad didn't: Albert Brooks' short films predated Mr. Bill -- at least on SNL. In fact, Brooks' shorts played a prominent role in Season One:

For old school shorts, I would be surprised if we didn't see Billy Crystal as Al Minkman, the gag gift businessman.

From the Samberg "era," I think Lazy Sunday is the best, though Natalie rapping is pretty good too.

I agree. I'm really tired of Lorne Michaels and NBC trying to turn "SNL" into "The Andy Samberg Show" with all of his lame digital shorts. Enough already.

I guess I fall in with "the rest of the Internet community" because I loved "Lazy Sunday" ("The Chronic - What? - cles of Narnia!". I also loved Natalie Portman's gangsta rap and Andy Samberg as the white rastafarian. My sister and I used to pee ourselves over Mr. Bill. "Oh noooooo!!!!".
