Americans! Green Wing is on Hulu!
You guys, you guys (Americans, specifically)! Green Wing is on Hulu! Exclamation mark! All right, let me back up. I am a British comedy nerd. Some of you more eagle-eyed readers may already know that one of my favorite shows is something called Green Wing, which aired on Channel 4 way back in 2004. It's one of those programs that perfectly blends the quickness and quotability of sketch comedy with the engaging story arcs of more traditional sitcoms. There is no laugh track (thank goodness) but a beautifully quirky score that heightens the comedy instead of fighting with it. Plus, it's just plain snazzy.
Apart from the ridiculously spectacular ensemble cast sporting major British comedy talent from Mark Heap to Stephen Mangan to Michelle Gomez, the other amazing thing about this show is the stylish editing. Time is slowed down and sped up to complement moments and this stylistic choice makes Green Wing something very different and refreshing compared to other comedies on television. You forget it's a hospital-based comedy because it feels like it's set in a completely different universe.
Despite all it's craziness, according to some people that work in hospitals, this show boasts a more accurate portrayal of hospital life than anything else on television. I am assuming (and hoping) that they are just refereeing to the stupid jokes during surgery and not all that stuff about murdering dwarfs or regurgitating gall bladders or the existence of people like Mark Heap's Dr. Statham.
All right, I'm done gushing about the show (actually, I'm not, but I'll stop anyway). I'm pretty excited that Americans are getting another chance to experience this show, and if you haven't already, please watch at least the first few episodes. It's worth it. Really.
