Scrubs duo moves on to NBC's Community

Joel McHale Community NBCIf ABC renews Scrubs for another season, the show might return without two of its longtime writer-producers.

Scrubs scribes Garrett Donovan and Neil Goldman will join NBC's upcoming comedy Community under a new two-year deal with Universal Media Studios. Community was reportedly a big hit at NBC's recent infront presentation, and it looks like the network has high hopes for the show.

Judging by the preview video that hit the Web this week, Community looks pretty damn hilarious. It stars Joel McHale (The Soup) as a lawyer who is forced to go back to community college. In an attempt to get closer to a girl who looks like Elisabeth Shue, he starts a study group with a team of misfits, including a quirky lifelong learner played by Chevy Chase.

The show is already packed with some decent behind-the-scenes talent. As Bob reported earlier this week, Arrested Development directors Joe and Anthony Russo and Sarah Silverman Program producer/writer Dan Harmon are behind the show. With the addition of Donovan and Goldman, who have been with Scrubs since season one, Community could turn out to be next fall's don't miss comedy.

I'll give it a shot, but in the history of television comedy has the premise of "Normal guy X is forced to perform role Y" ever worked out? Isn't that kind of what the whole foundation of the Seinfeld "pilot" was all about, the ridiculous premise of forcing somebody to be somebody else's butler?

I'm hoping that was just poor word choice and it ends up more like "chose to go back" or "felt he had to go back" or something. "Forced" sounds like a judge with a gavel and a poor script. "Because of your 75th DUI, I hearby sentence you to teach at a local community college." ???

So, if the ad says "forced," you'll give it a shot, but if it says "chooses," you'll give it a shot AND your comment will be less whiny? Sounds like the stakes are pretty high, I'll get the President of TV on the phone.

Here I go again trying to get traffic to my site :-)

If you want to read a review of the pilot script, head on over here. I thought it was fantastic and am just praying that NBC put it on Thursday nights.

Right now, Community has the Thursday 9:30 slot after Office, before Leno.
