CBS picks up Medium, insults NBC

by Bob Sassone, posted May 19th 2009 4:27PM
MediumWell, this is a rather interesting development, and a good one for fans of NBC's Medium: CBS has picked up the show after NBC canceled it.

You don't often see that happening, but it's been happening more and more lately (and this upfront week is crazy in general, with lots of renewals for shows we all thought were pretty much dead). CBS didn't just pick up the show, they got in a few digs at NBC too. CBS Television Studios produces Medium, and they say that "NBC's cancellation of Medium is inexplicable to us," and went on to point out that "the ratings don't lie. Medium outperforms many of NBC's renewed shows." They also talk about how NBC scheduled the show inconsistently.

No word yet on what exactly CBS will do with the show. Perhaps pairing it with Ghost Whisperer on Friday nights? (Note: CBS will not, however, pick up Knight Rider. Sorry, fans!)

I love Medium. I'm glad it's leaving NBC, they have been treating a great show like a piece of crap lately. NBC has been making alot of bad decisions lately. Cancelling 'Journeyman' was one. Putting Kath & Kim on the air was another and Leno in primetown 5 nights a week, I think, will be the biggest mistake.

If not for the addition of the Fabulous new show "SOUTHLAND", I would count NBC out totally.

Southland is the truth, just goes to show even idiots get it right sometimes.

In response to skffairfax....maybe we ought to start a "Reality Shows Must Go Campaign!" Reality Shows Must Go! Reality Shows Must Go! Come on, everybody, join in!! Reality Shows Must Go! Reality Shows Must Go!

Perhaps we ought to banish them to the "Reality Show Channel," eh? Put them on the Reality Channel Network?
There, they can show all the reality shows they want...to their hearts content. Hear that CEOs? What is that...do I hear -- $$$$?

Yeah but CBS canceled The Unit. That's a boneheaded move in my opinion.

Thank you CBS for picking up Medium. It's one of my favorite shows. I'm sick of the reality-type shows. We need more sitcoms for the 8:00 - 9:00 slots and more clever shows like Castle, Medium, Ghost Whisperer for the later time slots. The only good thing about Jay Leno being on at 10:00 (is this correct?) is that now I will be able to go to bed at 10 and not miss any of my favorite shows or get backlogged taping them.

Now what happens if Medium tanks on CBS, and is canceled? The CBS exec looks like a moron, and the NBC exec laughs every morning.

Kudos to picking up "Medium," CBS! Oh, what can I say here other than - I agree with VP. CBS, it would be nice to resurrect a quality show like "Life" from that, hmmm,
whatchamacallit -- is it that "NBC-PU" produced network?
It's a shame we, the audience, have to deal with all this nonsense year in and year out, year after year. Why do these networks always do away with quality shows only to
"force feed" us the miserly ones with the always lame and so-called "demographic" excuse -- TiVo is it? Hmmmm.
Demographics, huh? It's more like "propaganda-specific" audience, is it not? It's all business they say. Well, if someone up there was really, really thinking (which makes
one ponder the question, hmm) or is really, really, really thinking "green" as they say -- in dollars and "sense" -- then would it not be financially feasible to come up with a "Reality Channel Network" outside of basic television programming? Let "them" do the math! Why don't they just leave the "real" programming and the "real" shows, the quality ones, to the "real" people -- us! Now...THAT would interesting to see....try to "stage" that!

Someone should pick up Knight Rider and use David Hasselhoff to replace Edward Mulhare. IMHO "KR" is a lot better than some of the junk that is on these days!!!

NBC IS A DINOSAUR!
THEY ARE ALMOST FINISHED AS A NETWORK!
Medium is a great show. NBC gets rid of Leno with high ratings and puts Conan in with his lower ratings. NBC gets rid of Medium after treating one of their highest rated shows like a stepchild to most of their dreck on the air! They can't program their way out of a paper bag!

"NBC's cancellation of Medium is inexplicable to us,"

That's...not an insult. It's a statement of opinion. An insult would be "NBC is the dumbest network ever, and we can't believe the whack-a-moles they've got running the place."

But whatever. I didn't watch Medium on NBC, and I'm pretty sure I won't be watching it on CBS..

The source article has been updated: the pickup hasn't happened yet. It's just still possible. I guess we'll know when CBS unveils their schedule tomorrow.

VP: CBS doesn't have a good financial reason to pick up Life, because Life is an NBCU-produced show. Medium is a CBS Paramount Network TV show.

MrC: Medium is already in syndication on Lifetime.
