Charlie Kaufman wants to return to television

by Danny Gallagher, posted May 21st 2009 3:02PM
Charlie KaufmanCharlie Kaufman, the screenwriter behind such cinematic mind#*$#s as Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, has gotten fed-up with the narrow-minded fickleness of film.

It's gotten so bad that he is "seriously thinking" about working for the narrow-minded fickleness of television.

Kaufman told The London Paper that the filmmaking process has infuriated and frustrated him so that he may make the jump to TV.

It wouldn't be Kaufman's first time on the telly. That's how he got his start. He wrote episodes of the extremely underrated Fox sitcom Get a Life and The Dana Carvey Show. Those were shows where he was just getting his feet wet and trying to break into the biz. Just imagine what he could do with complete creative control.

Now multiply whatever you just imagined by 20 million and put down some newspaper so that your head exploding doesn't ruin your nice clean carpet. Kaufman has one of the most inventive, creative and deeply philosophical minds in the entertainment industry. His plans for a TV series are bound to be just as crazy, thought-provoking and entertaining as his highly acclaimed films.

The real question is, would anyone watch it? Pushing Daises featured a zany and deep format similar to Kaufman's dangerous mind with a lighthearted style, and it seemed to be pushing up daises from episode one. Ideally, his work would work best on a pay cable network where he's allowed to roam free. But his prior work in network television could prove beneficial since he already knows the boundaries and limitations of the medium and could surely find some interesting ways around those obstacles.

Either way, come to us Charlie. We'll accept you.

I actually have a pilot script that Kaufman wrote called 'Depressed Roomies' which I've been meaning to read forever. Maybe this news will inspire me.

His return to TV would be great, what with all the awful crap that's populating the airwaves in recent years. But if a quirky show like Pushing Daisies can't survive, I'm not sure something written by Kaufman has much chance.

Let's hope it's on HBO where they can commit to letting him do something really terrific over a couple of seasons.

Instead of ABC/NBC/CBS where he would fight to get an initial order of 13 episodes, then have to dumb it down to get 22.

If I remember correctly, Pushing Daisies' first season before the writer's strike was very well received and had pretty high ratings. The writer's strike and ABC's lack of care for the show is what really killed Pushing Daisies.

Also I am excited for anything Kaufman does.
