Glenn Beck gets a spanking on The View

by Danny Gallagher, posted May 21st 2009 1:02PM
Glenn BeckNormally I don't look forward to doing posts on The View or Glenn Beck because it makes people think that I watch them on a regular basis.

Both, however, collided together to make a tasty train wreck sandwich when Beck appeared on a recent episode of The View.

Co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters took the crying giant to task for characterizations Beck made of them on his radio program. Beck's subsequent chair squirming was so great, it shifted the tectonic plates and almost created a second earthquake on the Northeastern seaboard.

Once my schadenfreude boner wore off (and I should emphasize that it was the one AND only time I have ever gotten any kind of boner during a viewing of The View), an interesting question trickled down into my brain. What exactly is Glenn Beck and other pundits' jobs in the world of television news?

They clearly aren't reporters since all they do is comment on things that have already been reported. And they aren't editorialists in the traditional sense of the word since they don't have to do fact checks, make corrections to incorrect stories, or represent the views of their network or newsroom. What I can gather from Glenn's flustered response to The View girls' flame throwers is that "commentators" don't have to research facts or verify stories for accuracy to make it to the air. What does that make him? A blogger?

So what would you call people like Beck and his ilk? Please keep your names clean ones.

I really wish there was a news show that I could stand to watch...being a moderate and somewhere in the middle on many issues, I can't stand the slanting that both sides do...Fox News, (Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly) is so far right and so critical of the administation that it's too hard to watch, conversely, MSNBC (Olbermann, etc) way too far to the left and too protective of current policies, what can you do? CNN seems a little left as well but is closer to the middle than the others.....if their goal is only to entertain and play to their fans, fine, but where do you go to get impartial discussion of current events?

I like Glenn Beck--he is actually a libertarian-minded conservative--not really of the Limbaugh, Hannity, Coutler class.

I see his flamethrowing as a method of trying to bring conservatives back to libertarian values. Conservatives are so used to this crap, that they are unwilling to listen to traditional conservatives or libertarian minded conservatives--such as Ron Paul. By taking shots at the Ladies of the View he can hold his audience, and then perhaps later on educate them on true conservative values.

You really should listen to the growing number of commenters who've told you to shut up and go away. Germany and the people who reside there already have a terrible, but well-deserved reputation. You're just ironing out any remaining wrinkles of doubt.

Whoopi and Barbara Suck the big one!!!! What a waste of time talking to those two idiots. I feel bad for Glenn, no wonder men hate women. I have never seen anything so petty in my life. To waste his time like that. When he could have acctually spent his time talking about something worth wild. Like how the goverment is spending us into a third world country !!!!!!! Give me a freakin break!

I sincerely hope this is sarcasm.

Otherwise I suggest you think about how a country comprised of people living on multiple credit cards and running itself into the ground on bad mortgages can blame its government for basically doing the same on state level.

Bottom line...

The Republican party began its slow decent the moment it started to court the evangelical and "love freedoms" crowds.

The Democrats have become so used to appearing anti-Republican that it's hard for them to do anything else. There bigger Government ideas are a little too extravagant.

Beck and Olbermann are perfect spokesmen for these ways of thinking. I see Olbermann as more likely to level out but Beck is too far out there. It's probably an act, I believe Limbaugh is faking it too, but enough people follow him that it's a problem.

The things the Republicans stand for: Hardcore Christianity, freedom at ANY cost, anti-gay, anti-poor, anti-immigrant, etc. are positions of the past and they'll never be able to come back unless they change. I find it unbelievable that they bring up the founders as creating the country from a Christian perspective (totally false) and forget that they were not anti-immigrant and didn't support sweeping "With Us or Against Us" ideologies. Alien and Sedition Acts anyone? Huge firestorm and a scar on Adams' presidency if I remember correctly.

I'll say that I voted for Bush in '04 and Obama last year. I've left the Republican party and won't return until someone discovers how to reanimate Teddy Roosevelt and subsequently repeals the 22rd amendment. I'm waiting for a high profile intellectual Republican to restart the Progressive Party.

Well said, except I disagree with you on two things.

1. There's nothing wrong with freedom at any cost - I'm an extreme libertine and I believe the only time it's appropriate to take away our rights is when society would otherwise collapse. Like our right to murder each other. That's a right I'm willing to give up, because if I can murder you, you can murder me, and society would quickly fall apart. Basically any right that would directly harm any other person or their property should be taken away. But the default state of things is to be legal. Not illegal. That includes murder, rape, theft, etc.

2. Freedom is the last thing the republican party wants. They love to talk about it, but when do they act on it? Unless you're talking about "freedom to force christian values on everyone else" or "freedom to not pay taxes" but surely nothing beyond that. Being an advocate for freedom means you believe in letting people do things that you personally do not agree with. When the Republican party (which I now call the Republican-Christian party) is FOR the end of the drug war and decriminalization of ALL drugs, then they can rightly say they are for freedom. But they can't even deal with simple marijuana decriminalization and would prefer to waste hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer dollars to keep nonviolent americans locked up - to lock up more people and a greater percentage of our population than any other country in the world (including China). That's the time of big spending and anti-freedom they love.

And then there was the Patriot Act, which they forced down our throats due to fear - it was nothing more than a list of pro-police, pro-government laws the Republicans had been drooling over for decades, and with 9-11 they had the excuse to scare people into getting it passed (without even reading it!). The Dems are doing the same thing with the stimulus bill - using fear of the economy getting worse to pass a huge bill containing thousands of public programs and things to spend money on that they've been drooling over for decades.

The Democrats' motivation is more honorable, they think their spending will make things better, while the Republicans' motivation was to consolidate government power (because they thought they'd be in power forever after 9-11, the best thing to ever happen to them). But they are both taking advantage of Americans' fear and Congress' lack of balls to get their agendas passed.

But you're right about everything else.

But the worst thing about the Republicans is that they sold out to the Religious (Christian) fascists. Then they start lying about the framers of the constitution, saying they were all Jesus freaks too (most were deists, and though quite poorly of Christianity - especially the primary authors like Madison and Jefferson). I hate religion and I cannot support any candidate, let alone politican party, that bases its platform and agenda on reigion. This is NOT a christian country (any more than it's an English country or a white country) and religion is like pubic hair - it should be kept to yourself, off the dinner table and off of television and out of the public square. Do what Jesus says - go into your closet, close the door and pray there - where nobody can see you... it's not meant to be advertised or showed off.

I hate big government and I'd prefer not to be a democrat. Though Republicans would be spending the same AMOUNT bailout and economic stimulus money that Obama has spent, the only differences are (1) they would not require any oversight or responsibility of the companies receiving bailout money because "that's communism" and (2) they'd give the economic stimulus money to Exxon and other big companies that don't need it, because "they create jobs" (the type of trickle-down economics that's been proven wrong time and time again).

The best thing we can do to improve the economy is to reduce barriers to job entry (you should not need a license and to pay an occupational tax to be a florist or pet groomer) and to reduce competition (do not allow companies to get "so big the can't be allowed to fail" - that's anti-competitive and thus anti-capitalistic).

I am absolutely against giving all this bailout money to all these companies, but the Republicans DID and would continue to do the same thing. Their only complaint with Obama is that he's quiring some oversight ("Nationalism" as they call it).

I voted for Bush in 2000, though by 2004 I realized he was the worst most incompetent person to ever hold a government office and that all he cared about was pleasing his imaginary friend (god).

As for Olberman, just because the republicans give him a ton of stuff to pick apart, it doesn't mean he is unfair or one-sided. Same with Jon Stewart. These peop

This is what makes me gag about TV Squad. I don't mind a Beck-slam-ha-ha posting, but where's the Olbermann-is-an-idiot posting? Are the folks at TV Squad a bunch of left-leaning folks?

At least Danny doesn't pretend to be unbiased like a lot on the left.

"Are the folks at TV Squad a bunch of left-leaning folks?"

To put it succinctly and in the vernacular of today's young folk: "Well duh!"

This is for Bruce.....I really feel sorry for you. To believe that there isn't a higher being makes me sad for you and I will pray for you.
Your a lost soul like many other left wingers I know that have no real direction....you want to save trees and animals and rainforests but yet dont want to save a human baby from abortion. You want the rich to take care of you yet dont understand when there is no money because there are no longer rich people to take care of you because you found your "equality". You would rather watch another country be rapped and piledged than to help your fellow man in another far off country. You would rather watch foreign countries take our natural resources from our coasts (Obama stopped the oil companies from drilling 15 miles off the coast and now China and Russia and other countries have moved in to steal it...and yes I have proof) You wont let us drill in a desolate area of the world where nothing lives but ICE and COLD. I could go on but Iam sure you've heard the lies.

I live in a state that has THE highest taxes paid by a U.S. citizen to create the Utopian EQUAL society that you dems. think we can achieve....aka the Republic of California and you know what is soooo funny? We are BILLIIONS of dollars in Debt still....this is a state controlled by a Democratic house and run by a puppet Republican....yet lets not forget kids....a governor doesn't pass/make laws his house does that. I liberal run state that has went BILLIONS of dollars in debt.
We could look at Alaska or Montana which pays the LOWEST taxes per capita and yet these two states manage to have EXCESS funds? Guess what? There not liberal....there CONSERVATIVE states.
God forbid we wouldn't want to model our Nation towards that! excess money no way!
As far as Beck? He is off the wall half the time and sometimes he is dead on.
The "View" what a joke, talk about a bunch of women that acted like three yr. olds....wow! They wouldn't even let the guy get a sentence out so how can u say he was slammed and put in his place? I think they were too afraid to let him speak cause they would have been put in there place to be honest.

I'm not a left-winger, I've voted Republican my whole life, until the GOP turned into a big spending, anti-liberty, pro-torture, fearmongering cult of the Christian Right. I'm libertarian leaning, if anything. Let's put it this way - I call myself a "Goldwater liberal" insofar as I love Barry Goldwater and insofar as Obama, Hillary Clinton, and even Al Franken are so far to the right of Barry Goldwater that Barry "Mr. Conservative" Goldwater wouldn't be welcome in the modern Democratic Party.

As for the religious crap, take your prayers and shove them. By the way, statistically speaking, the chances are incredibly high that you're praying to the wrong god. There are thousands if not tens of thousands of religions, it's beyond egotistical to think that YOUR god is the only right one. So, we can both burn in hell together as only the Zoroastrians guessed right.

Of course there is really no guessing about it - religion is not a choice any more than homosexuality. It's a mental disorder passed down from parent to child. Do you think it's a coincidence that you are the same religion as your parents? Or did you start out as an agnostic, research all the world's religions, and settle on one of them to devote yourself (yea right).

While praying is pointless, I will hope that you will be one of the very few (about 1 in 10,000) people afflicted with the disease of religion who goes into spontaneous remission. Like cancer, there is no cure for religion, but every now and then people go into remission. Unfortunately it's quite rare. May you be cured of your mental disorder.

Bruce, your biggest problem, and you have many, is your name. You should get it over now and change it to "bullshitter". You never voted Republican, much less voted for Bush.

What you *ARE* is a hypocrite, a liar, a so-far-left-leaning-as-to-be-horizontal liberal, a proselytizer worse than any you rail against and the definitive village idiot. Your very existence is laughable as are your comments.

The women of the view thought Glenn had lied. He had not. They did not treat him like a guest and certainly not like guest whom they had never really met. They waisted my time and any opportunity for reasonable conversation. They choose the wrong place, wrong time to clear up their confusion about an event that was not worthy of on air discussion.
