Freddie Prinze Jr. joins the cast of 24

by Brad Trechak, posted May 28th 2009 11:33AM
Freddie Prinze Jr.Freddie Prinze Jr. will be joining the cast of 24 for the eighth season as a recently-returned marine and Jack Bauer-wannabe named Davis Cole. I think this is an example of Fox either wanting to expand or continue the franchise without Kiefer Sutherland.

Think about it. Sutherland is only getting older. He can't be Jack Bauer forever. Prinze is a younger, recognizable face (much as all of us want to forget the Scooby Doo movie franchise). This could be the set-up for one of three things: the retirement of Jack Bauer from 24, a spin-off series, or an opportunity to have more negotiating power for Kiefer Sutherland's next contract renewal. It could even be a combination of the three.

So the question to ask is: could the series continue without Jack Bauer, or would that be the beginning of the end? Since the name of the show is 24 and not Jack Bauer, I would think so.

It is clear by reading this article that the people who write these are neither fans of the show nor even regular watchers. Kiefer, in actuality is in his early forties and therefore not too old at all to continue with the role of Jack Bauer. Not to mention that he has made the show what it is today and without him the series could not continue. Having led the show alongside its stellar production team and cast to its many awards, Kiefer is not an actor that could or would ever be tossed out in order to insert a more youthful face. Likewise, in almost every case so far, actors are made more popular by being cast in 24, not the reverse. Lastly, if you watch 24 you know that you cannot possibly equate casting a new actor with Kiefer leaving the show or getting replaced. Every season of 24 brings new actors therefore there is not reason to believe Jack is going to be replaced! Kiefer makes 24 what it is, and any true fan would, without question, agree.

Well then, just change the name of the show to "Jack Bauer". Honestly, I believe that "24" would hit rock bottom with Kiefer Sutherland. There is not one man alive that can play this part the way "Jack" does. Everyone I know refers to the show as "Jack" - they rarely refer to it as "24" and people still relate. So . . . that face and that name goes hand in hand and without that man, there will be no viewers - at least not enough to keep it on the air.

Would I watch "24" with Agent Walker (Annie Wersching) and without Kiefer Sutherland? Yes? Freddie Prinze Jr? Probably not.

I would like to point out that before 24 started, the idea of Keifer Sutherland as some bad-ass anti-terrorisim agent didn't seem very likely either. Heck,.. I couldn't see how Robert Downey Jr. could pull off being Iron Man, but I was pleasantly surprised how that turned out. So with that in mind, I think we should give anyone a chance before we pick up the pitch forks and light the torches.

But for what it's worth, I don't think 24 will last very long without Jack. What would be funny (sad,.. but funny) is to see 24 do a prequel with people playing the younger versions of all the key players. (But if they start StarTreking it up and messing with alternate dimensions and invalidating Jack, then I am SO out of there) ;)

24 is all about the trials and tribulations of Jack Bauer. Maybe he could take something of a lesser role (like Jack McCoy in L&O) and have the show's primary character become Freddie? Unlikely, but possible.

I can't, in my wildest TV watching history, imagine Mr. Freddie Prince Junior, aka "Fred" of Scooby Doo, replacing The Man, f****g Jack Bauer.

However, thanks for providing a good laugh at the thought.

How on earth did you draw the conclusion that adding a character to the next season = Kiefer leaving the show? They add characters every year!

If thought 24 could continue w/o Jack if Tony was the given the lead. However, 24 painted itself into a corner by making Tony evil so I vote no. I will not watch 24 w/o Jack especially if they try to make Agent Walker the new Jack Bauer.
