A plea to Keith Olbermann on his new Rush Limbaugh logo: We surrender!

by Danny Gallagher, posted May 31st 2009 11:37AM
Keith Olbermann and analyst Lawrence O'Donnell on
MSNBC's Keith Olbermann got into a feud this week with talking head Rush Limbaugh. That's not really news. Olbermann and Limbaugh have long been bees in each other's bonnets ever since they took to the airwaves that they are destined to break William Shatner and George Takei's record.

But Olbermann turned up the heat with a blow torch after Limbaugh called out his network on the air.

Limbaugh took MSNBC to task for mentioning him for the bajillionth time and issued a challenge to the network that thankfully didn't involve full man-on-man wrestling or some kind of hot dog eating contest. He challenged MSNBC not to mention him or his show for 30 days and then compare how well they did in the ratings. Olbermann issued a statement to Limbaugh's challenge, "F you!" And yes, that was a direct quote.

Olbermann not only failed to answer Limbaugh's fencing glove, but he's given the man more TV time than he could ever want. He topped the MSNBC logo with an image of a bouncing Limbaugh taken from his recent appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference on his Countdown show. He continues to use the logo anytime Limbaugh's name is discussed.

At first, the image was amusing. Limbaugh invented the term "a face for radio" and has no business jumping up and down for any reason. Screw liberalism. Gravity is his biggest mortal enemy.

A week has gone by and Olbermann continues to run the looping logo. Enough is enough! If Limbaugh won't concede, then I will. Countdown does air during my dinner time, you know.

None of these shows are for real. All of these "news anchors" are entertainers and nothing more. They're in it for the shock value and the big pay day, none of them give a rat's behind about politics or the news... at least not the way the pretend to on television. My Uncle knew Limbaugh when he was in KC, the man is a straight up liberal. This "head of the Republican party" thing he's got going now is a 100% money-making vehicle. It's pretty genius really.

It's a payday for both these jerks. . . Don't take what either says seriously, otherwise you're taking the bait.

The conservative line seems to be that when their guy is in office, and their guy screws up for 8 years straight, it's not fair (or "bais") for the media to criticize him in any way.

I don't know if this position comes from willful blindness, stupidity, bad faith, or a combination of all three, but regardless, it really amazes me. Obama is not god, but Bush was the worst president this country has ever had and will ever have (since the country will not be able to survise the "Bush Depression" and will soon collapse, exacerbated in part due to Obama spending for the sake of spending). Practically ever word out of Bush's mouth was objectively stupid. He was a man who was constantly misguided by those around him, a horrible judge of character, a person who by his own admission did not believe in facts, but rather took things on faith (i.e. "it feels right, voice of invisible jesus in my head tells me it's right, so therefore it must be right").

When Obama screws up I'm the first to criticize him. Nobody should be beyond criticism, and many democrats/liberals are happy with whatever Obama does (or merely says he'll do yet never actually does) as long as the conservatives whine about it. But no matter how bad Obama is, and even when the federal government collapses during his administration in about 1.5 years (he'll be the last president), he will not have been as bad as Bush. Unless you're one of the many teabaggers out there who judge a president by the color of his skin. And there are a lot of these blatant racists: when you complain about the black president doing something that you had no problem with when it was done by the previous white president, it means you're a racist.

The point being, just because one side gets more media criticism than the other - it does not mean the media is inherently biased. As for people like Olbermann, they are opinionated commentators so nobody should expect them to come across with an absolutely neutral viewpoint.

Here's how you know which side is the "right" side - watch both sides' various news shows, and see which side calls out the other side for false statements. I don't care what you think of MSNBC, they don't cut and edit news clips to make it look like someone says something opposite of what they said, to intentionally take them out of context, or intentionally pass off false facts. Fox News is not correcting MSNBC's facts. It's because they can't.

"The conservative line seems to be that when their guy is in office..."

And the liberal line is to imply that conservatives never criticized Bush. Actually conservatives, including Limbaugh, criticized Bush plenty. They also defended him when the attacks on him from elsewhere were unjust. If one was paying attention enough to actually see what happened, rather than having to take some liberal's word for what happened, it all was fairly reasonable.

Keith O, like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert... they all built careers on the back of making fun of the Republican establishment as it comedically self-destructed. Now that the American far right has imploded and teh Democrats are in power at every level, there is little these guys can really do at the same level they had been used to for 8 years. I've seen them poke at some Dem hypocrisy a few times, but given that by comparison Obama is showing remarkable competence, the humour value in absurdity that kept these guys in business for a decade is faded.

It seems like all three of them have decided to not update their schtick (at least not yet), and keep going with the same old... but now instead of the GOP leadership as the main target they are choosing FOX News and Rush. Fair enough, I suppose... those are still as absurdly ridiculous and hyper-hypocritical as ever, with their tea-bagging parties and sheer panic at being out of power for a few months.

Keith O in particular has little other choice. What the hell else is the guy going to do? Until he turns on Obama for being too moderate, the rants that made Keith famous have to be directed at the few far-right wingers in power, and these happen to be his media rivals. Whatever it takes to keep his viewers watching, eh?

Now, I'm not sure about Olberman or Maddow but Stewart's target on the Daily show has ALWAYS been the media itself. The Daily Show and The Colbert report are parodies of so-called news programs on the 24 hour news networks.

Stewart regularly goes after CNN, CNBC MSNBC and yes, FOX. This is nothing new. it's their damn mission statement.

First let me state that I have my disagreements with Limbaugh.

But that being said, his point is being proven true. MSNBC has such a hard-on for attacking Limbaugh that they physically could not go 30 days without reporting on him. Ridiculous Olbermann only furthers Limbaugh's whole point. Doesn't KO realize that or is he so blinded by promoting his ideology that it escapes him?

Carrie, if you get your news from Keith O. you've got more things to worry about than the ticker at the bottom of your screen.

Keith is a commentator who used to be a journalist. If he was in the newspaper biz, he would have a nice article in the op-eds page.

He's not good for getting the news. He's good for getting one side of a debate. Just like Hannity and O'Reilly and Maddow and Stewart...

Listen to both sides, you will have a pretty well-rounded view of things. But don't go to them for the hard truth. Just the spin version.

Also, Limbaugh is only the defacto Republican head to ignorant liberals who really don't want to talk policy and issues but really just want to argue about extremes.

If you guys want to play three blind mice then find another little mouse, cause I am not playing this game.

Are you seriously telling me, you don't see the slant in this article? Seriously?

Okay. Maybe it wasn't blatant enough for you or you've decided to ignore the ENTIRE end of the article. Because its the ending that makes this article lean more than that tower in italy.

Just look at the last two paragraphs. There just insults toward Limbaugh.

And that's all good and well but, in general, every article on this site that insults a talking head... is usually insulting a conservative talking head.

Now, it's fine if you want to only represent one side. But don't act like you're not doing that. This site comes off as an extreme liberal site. Now if you're not, then my question is "are there any conservative writers?"

Pretty simple question.

The sooner you all realize that ALL government is corrupt beyond our wildest imagination you see that none of these people matter.

The point being, both parties want us to argue with each other about meaningless crap. If we blame each other for our problems, then we ignore the bigger issue, which is that we have a government that is totally out of control.

Obama is just like every other politician before him. He's in power to take care of his buddies. He could give a crap about the country, or any of us. Give it time, people will see he's nothing special. Fact is, he's done NOTHING in his previous political career. He can speak well with his teleprompter, but that's about it. Wait, he "wrote" two books......

As long as Limbaugh is the de facto head of the Republican Party, then the wacky, crazy-ass crap he says is legitimate news, and as such, it's perfectly fair and reasonable - in fact, expected - for Olbermann to report on it. Insofar as the thigns Limbaugh says are inaccurate, misleading, half-truths, or otherwise falsities, it's perfetly proper and responsible for Olbermann to point out such things. Same goes for all news anchors/networks. To not do so for the spokemen of both political parties is irresponsible - nobody should be permitted to lie, mislead, or be a hypocrite with impugnity.

When Limbaugh begins picking apart the things Oblermann says, showing how they are, in fact, not true, let me know. Until then, Olbermann is in the right here.

And I hate both political parties, I've been horribly disappointed with Obama, I despise Bush, I am not a registered Democrat, so don't accuse me of being biased.
