Where is The Next Doctor?

by Brad Trechak, posted Jun 2nd 2009 5:05PM
Doctor WhoBBC Video will be releasing some new DVDs in North America come July that includes Torchwood: Children of Earth and Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead. I immediately took note of the fact that nobody mentioned releasing the last Doctor Who Christmas special which was broadcast in England in December 2008, The Next Doctor.

Way back in 1996, the BBC co-produced a Doctor Who television movie with Fox in the United States which starred Paul McGann as the Doctor. Since then, the rights regarding reproduction or broadcast of that movie in North America has been somewhat convoluted at best. In the last Christmas special, a clip of Paul McGann from that TV movie was shown, and I cannot help but wonder if that clip is holding up release of the video.

Of course, it could simply be a case of the BBC waiting until Christmas or any one of a dozen other reasons. But I have a suspicious mind and I cannot help but think that it was a mistake for the BBC to ever co-produce Doctor Who with an American company if it is such a hindrance to the American release of their own DVDs.

Hi from down under:

if you have a multi-region DVD player and can wait until new stock arrives, The Next Doctor is available as a R4 DVD release. Details are here:

According to http://home.comcast.net/~smanfred/Latest.html:

"Some of the dates of the high-definition Doctor Who and Torchwood releases have shuffled about a bit recently. This is due both to BBC America's picking up of Doctor Who as America's first-run network and their running of
the new specials in June and July and to their desire to have the new high-definition titles out in time for the San Diego Comic Con at the end of July. It's this latter desire that has led to the 2008 Christmas special, The Next Doctor, which wasn't shot in high-definition, being skipped on DVD release for now, but it should be out sometime later in the year."

Maybe because the 1996 film was a piece of crap? Maybe it is the red headed stepchild of the Who world. I, for one, would be thrilled to have it buried in the ocean. Of another planet.

These "plain vanilla" DVD's have only been released in the US for the Eccelston series. Then they're on season sets.

If you think they're not going to also release a set of the 2009 Specials, you're fooling yourself. :)

I'm not at home to check, but I believe all the full season disc sets contain the previous year's Xmas episode, so this one may not come out until the next full season set.

I am surprised, though, that they're releasing the remaining David Tenant movies individually. Seems like they could've gone in one set/disc along with The Next Doctor.
