Conan O'Brien, you magnificent nerd

Conan O'Brien
Mr. Conan O'Brien -- or ConeBone69, as some of us like to call him -- is still going through his first week at The Tonight Show, with both fans and critics watching his every move. No pressure. Naturally, we are witnessing the initial jitters and struggle to discover the right rhythm and tone in a new environment, but O'Brien's getting through it with minimal cringing (though the same cannot be said for Andy Richter's weirdly forced laughs).

One of the first things I noticed was that the set doesn't really feel like it's O'Brien's. Maybe it's just a super-jarring change from the cozier and much smaller Late Night home, or maybe it's because the new studio smell hasn't faded. It all seemed too shiny and new to feel real, is what I'm saying. But now this gem of a discovery immediately makes everything better: The new studio is in Super Mario's Mushroom Kingdom.

Now, I'm not by any means a Nintendo expert but I'm feeling extra-gullible today, so I'm convinced. The two images on SeriousLunch (including the animated GIF) match up perfectly, though I don't know how much cutting and rearranging was involved in the Mushroom Kingdom image. Can any of you hardcore Mario fans confirm or deny?

If this is as it seems, then Conesie (and/or a very adorable set designer) has just gained major brownie points in my book. Also, also, the ever eagle-eyed Bob Sassone points out this Tweet from Tonight Show's Aaron Bleyaert. Looks like Conan and the gang might do a bit about it tonight! Ah, the power of the Internet.

I'd love to believe it was intentional, but there is so far, zero evidence of that. The second image was not one image from a mario game, it was a smorgasboard of images from different games and probably different objects from different games, just pieced together, so you could make it look like anything.

Hehe I just love the idea because I've been sitting here watching these three monologues and every time I'm distracted by that background - as well as the backdrop behind his desk when he does the Interviews. I still like it though and honestly love the show up until now :-)

Deny deny deny.

Come on, just take a look at the picture. The number of various Mario Bros. images are cut and rearranged like a Picasso piece. Just because the set piece is geometric doesn't mean it came from a game that's relied heavily on geometric shapes in it's art design. It's like saying something made purely of squares and rectangles was inspired by Tetris.

did you see the second, animated image ? you can clearly see that they align perfectly.

Yeah martin but these are _different Mario games_

They align so perfectly because somebody took the time and effort to patch a dozen different Mario Screenies together to fit the Conan backdrop.
