Alana is right I read these books in highschool and I'm 30. These were out way before Twilight and if I remember it's a love triangle thing, and Stefan has a brother named Damon. Great books if memory serves right.

I would like to think that they all can have their place, nothing wrong with a little variety. After all we all know that once you've seen one vampire you certainly have not seen them all!
