Nurse Jackie: Chicken Soup

There were some awesome guest stars in this episode of Nurse Jackie! Eli Wallach played Mr. Zimberg, the old guy who refused treatment for his heart issues. Wallach was born in 1915 (!) and has been working steadily since the 1950s. I mean, what a life he's had and what a piece of film history he is. His credits include The Misfits, The Magnificent Seven, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. It's such a pleasure seeing him on Nurse Jackie.
Playing his wife was Lynn Cohen, who played Magda on Sex and the City and Uncle Pete's wife on Damages, not to mention dozens of other film and TV roles.
And then there's the wonderful Anna Deavere Smith (pictured above), who plays the ongoing role of Doctor Akalitis. She's such a great actress; she makes me despise her character, but in a good way.
Let's talk about the storyline. So, chicken soup really IS good for the soul. Well, we all knew that. We had Mr. Zimberg's wife feeding him chicken soup when he refused treatment ("They don't call chicken soup Jew's penicillin for nothing," he said). And then the story came back around so beautifully when Nurse Jackie fed it to her own troubled daughter at the end of the episode. Sometimes, you just need some chicken soup.
I loved the storyline about the couple from the Midwest (Jackie correctly guessed where they were from because "you're in pain and you're apologizing" -- Midwesterners everywhere understood that line!). The wife almost made me want to try Vicodin with her descriptions: "It's the most amazing feeling I've ever had; like the most perfect day you've ever had in your life."
In fact, I'm starting to wonder how many people might try some of these drugs after seeing that Nurse Jackie is still able to function at a high level while taking them, and hearing comments like this woman's about how wonderful they are.
Providing comic relief in this episode was perky Zoey and her quest to retrieve her stethoscope from Dr. O'Hara, who was playing a game of cat-and-mouse with her. And this line from Nurse Jackie: "Here's a tip: doctors take shit ... stethoscopes, sandwiches, credit ... it's what they do. They can't help themselves."
More fun and/or interesting lines from this episode:
"Your hands feel sad." - Jackie to her pharmacist lover Eddie, right before he tells her he's being replaced by an automated pill dispenser.
"Yeah, I have a huge crush on Eddie. In fact, we f*ck every day at noon." - Jackie to Dr. Cooper
"It's like a little pink mouse swinging from a vine." - Mo-Mo to Jackie, describing how a patient's cat must have felt right before he attacked the guy's testicles
"You were licking your lips like a cartoon wolf!" - Jackie to Mo-Mo, after seeing him eyeing Dr. Cooper
I look forward to your witty and insightful comments on this episode of Nurse Jackie.
