So You Think You Can Dance: Top 14 Perform
(S05E11) You know that there is going to be a lot of unnecessary fluff when there are seven couples and two hours to fill. The show decided to give us highs and lows of the dancers. Damn time wasters. Did anyone notice the credits took twice the amount than they normally do? Our guest judge was Mia Michaels who admitted that her harsh opinion of Brandon has changed. Cat in her hot fuchsia dress mentioned a "big announcement" near the end of the show, as if she didn't want us to switch over to America's Got Talent. Unfortunately, it wasn't Michael Jackson related.
High Marks
Melissa & Ade – Classical Pas de Deux - It had to be rigged for Melissa to get the Classical Pas de Deux; she'd be the only one who could ace the performance. Similar to the first Bollywood routine, the first actual Ballet routine was dreamy and beautiful. Ade's strength is staggering and Melissa is beautiful in her element.
Janette & Brandon - Cha-Cha – I'm always afraid that the first dance would be forgotten, but the dance was solid and after long commercials I still remembered it. I disliked the Nigel statement about Brandon being Michelangelo, but Mia explained her tough love with Brandon so they balanced out.
Middle Ground
Karla & Vitolio – Quickstep – For the kiss of death, the two did well. The quick change was great, very magician of Jean-Mark to think of. The routine was 50/50 Broadway and Quickstep. The two had a strong hold, but a little weak in the separate section.
Jeanine & Phillip - Hip-Hop - Two Hip-Hop routines in four weeks? That's an unfair advantage for Phillip. Let's give him a contemporary to see how he survives on Jeanine's turf. I think the two had to hold the chain to prevent a broken ankle, because they didn't during the practice video. Mia thought the chain was sloppy, but the dance was strong; luckily we're not voting for the chain.
Kayla & Kupono – Jazz – Sonya is a little crazy, but next to Brian Friedman and Mia Michaels, she seems almost normal. I don't remember any specific moves, but I remembered the whole vampire vibe. If the two failed a contemporary, they deserve to lose.
The Bottom Rung
Randi & Evan - Broadway - I loved the 60s/Fosse routine, but I did agree with Nigel that it wasn't as sharp as it could have been. The wrists are what made those 60s productions like Sweet Charity so sexy. Evan disappointed me in his own style. I felt the height deficit that Nigel mentioned and this is the first time.
Caitlin & Jason - Pop Jazz – Sometimes routines go right over my head. The only part I got and liked was Jason's frightened man. Caitlin reminded me of the Halle Berry version of Catwoman and I agree with Mia that the tinfoil was distracting. You can't prevent ugly costumes, but Caitlin didn't channel the emotion that she needed to fill out the suit.
The Big Announcement – The Dizzy Feet Foundation - Carrie Ann Inaba from Dancing with the Stars is working with Katie Holmes and Nigel to help get underprivileged dancers. It sounds like Idol Gives Back, but with focus. I Shane Sparks was labeled as "Judge" for America's Best Dance Crew. I love this United States of Dance; joining together for a good cause.
The Other Announcement – The 100th episode will have Katie Holmes perform her Judy Garland routine. If it's anything like her performance on Eli Stone, I'm sold.
Who are my bottom three? I think that Randy, Brandon, and Phillip have a high number of supporters, so they are safe. Melissa & Ade rocked the Pas de Deux, so they are safe. Caitlin & Jason have been in the bottom before and with America not understanding Kayla & Max's performance, I doubt this one will make much sense. We're left with Karla & Vitolio and Kayla & Kupono. I can see Kayla become the black widow and they get rid of Kupono and Caitlin is out-shined by the rest of the girls. Who goes home? Leave your comments below.
