So You Think You Can Dance: 2 of 14 Eliminated
(S05E12) We're welcomed to the show by Cat Deeley lamenting Thursdays. I'm often confused by Cat mentioning the dancers dancing their "own style." It must have been a Donyelle rule. I guess we'll never see Karla channel her inner Boogie Bot. The sound quality was off tonight, proving that part of the show was live; when they transitioned from live to the clips, you could hear the echoes. The biggest culprit was the transition to Kelly Clarkson; the audience applause didn't sound the same at all.
Group Performance - Brand New Day – The performance was mostly camera mugging, but having a lot of the non Contemporary dancers gone, a lot of the movements were smoother. I didn't see much of Phillip; the shots that we saw, he was behind by a few seconds. I guess they hid him in the back for a reason.
Contemporary Ballet - Caprice in E Minor, Op. 1, No. 3 - Desmond Richardson! I knew he'd be back with something cool. I had a feeling after the Classical Pas de Deux last night, we would get an example of a contemporary ballet. Those two had legs and knew exactly how to use them. I couldn't get past that they were so damn flexible.
The Solos - I wasn't shocked by Kupono & Kayla and Vitolio & Karla. The only real big shock was Phillip & Jeanine making it into the bottom, probably because Caitiln's foil-hat clad family called actual aliens and voted.
Karla - Blackbird - She's calmer and decided to give us more of a story. It's nice seeing the angles of her arms and legs as she tried to express her inner bird.
Vitolio - Here Comes Goodbye - I have a problem on reality TV and songs about leaving, because they usually go home like Camile Velasco singing "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" on American Idol. Vitolio tried to explain a story, channeling his inner struggle. The movements weren't as broken as last week, but he's been in the bottom so long that he should be going home.
Kayla - Stupid - I thought that Kayla showed her biggest strength: her leg flexibility. She did use a little too much of it, though. I think the song was a little too fast for what she wanted to do, but the leg strength was good.
Kupono - Somewhere Over the Rainbow - In an attempt to channel his hometown, Kupono gives us an IZ performance. It was sadly boring, no matter how much I love the song. His one leap felt really weak and had none of that calm strength that Mia mentioned last night.
Jeanine - Moonlight Sonata - I think I'm surprised by Jeanine because she's been shadowed by Phillip. She was great and I like the choice of song. Her spin was solid and she didn't break out of it.
Phillip - You'll Find a Way - Phillip knows how to pop and it shows. His performance was just great to watch. I can't help but think about how much he sucked at the Broadway and Tango performances.
Guest Performance
Kelly Clarkson - I Do Not Hook Up - Kelly Clarkson must be a little nervous about her position in pop music if she's performing on this show. I usually expect SYTYCD to be a dance/reggaeton/sugar pop/hip-hop showcase, and seeing Kelly rocking out is weird. The performance was fine, but just not SYTYCD material. At least the Veronicas have a slight electronica sound.
The Elimination
In the shot coming out of the commercial, Mia looked like she was arguing, but Nigel mentioned the girls' elimination was unanimous. Jeanine had the strongest solo and was automatically safe. Kayla is a choreographer/judge favorite, but was static in her solo. Karla very good, but she finally got the cut.
With the guys, the judges were also unanimous. Phillip is good at his solo, but not anything else. This was probably the best time. Vitolio presents himself well, but doesn't deliver. Kupono had the weakest solo and needed passion. Vitolio was sent home.
Well, the Asians are going like clockwork. I don't think that Kupono is going to last much longer. I hope Alex Wong can try out next season and get out of his contract. Who should have gone home? Leave your opinions below.
