So You Think You Can Dance: 2 of 14 Eliminated

by Michael Pascua, posted Jul 3rd 2009 11:46AM
Kupono and Kayla perform a Contemporary routine on SYTYCD(S05E12) We're welcomed to the show by Cat Deeley lamenting Thursdays. I'm often confused by Cat mentioning the dancers dancing their "own style." It must have been a Donyelle rule. I guess we'll never see Karla channel her inner Boogie Bot.

The sound quality was off tonight, proving that part of the show was live; when they transitioned from live to the clips, you could hear the echoes. The biggest culprit was the transition to Kelly Clarkson; the audience applause didn't sound the same at all.

Group Performance - Brand New Day – The performance was mostly camera mugging, but having a lot of the non Contemporary dancers gone, a lot of the movements were smoother. I didn't see much of Phillip; the shots that we saw, he was behind by a few seconds. I guess they hid him in the back for a reason.

Contemporary Ballet - Caprice in E Minor, Op. 1, No. 3 - Desmond Richardson! I knew he'd be back with something cool. I had a feeling after the Classical Pas de Deux last night, we would get an example of a contemporary ballet. Those two had legs and knew exactly how to use them. I couldn't get past that they were so damn flexible.

The Solos - I wasn't shocked by Kupono & Kayla and Vitolio & Karla. The only real big shock was Phillip & Jeanine making it into the bottom, probably because Caitiln's foil-hat clad family called actual aliens and voted.

Karla - Blackbird - She's calmer and decided to give us more of a story. It's nice seeing the angles of her arms and legs as she tried to express her inner bird.

Vitolio - Here Comes Goodbye - I have a problem on reality TV and songs about leaving, because they usually go home like Camile Velasco singing "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" on American Idol. Vitolio tried to explain a story, channeling his inner struggle. The movements weren't as broken as last week, but he's been in the bottom so long that he should be going home.

Kayla - Stupid - I thought that Kayla showed her biggest strength: her leg flexibility. She did use a little too much of it, though. I think the song was a little too fast for what she wanted to do, but the leg strength was good.

Kupono - Somewhere Over the Rainbow - In an attempt to channel his hometown, Kupono gives us an IZ performance. It was sadly boring, no matter how much I love the song. His one leap felt really weak and had none of that calm strength that Mia mentioned last night.

Jeanine - Moonlight Sonata - I think I'm surprised by Jeanine because she's been shadowed by Phillip. She was great and I like the choice of song. Her spin was solid and she didn't break out of it.

Phillip - You'll Find a Way - Phillip knows how to pop and it shows. His performance was just great to watch. I can't help but think about how much he sucked at the Broadway and Tango performances.

Guest Performance

Kelly Clarkson - I Do Not Hook Up - Kelly Clarkson must be a little nervous about her position in pop music if she's performing on this show. I usually expect SYTYCD to be a dance/reggaeton/sugar pop/hip-hop showcase, and seeing Kelly rocking out is weird. The performance was fine, but just not SYTYCD material. At least the Veronicas have a slight electronica sound.

The Elimination

In the shot coming out of the commercial, Mia looked like she was arguing, but Nigel mentioned the girls' elimination was unanimous. Jeanine had the strongest solo and was automatically safe. Kayla is a choreographer/judge favorite, but was static in her solo. Karla very good, but she finally got the cut.

With the guys, the judges were also unanimous. Phillip is good at his solo, but not anything else. This was probably the best time. Vitolio presents himself well, but doesn't deliver. Kupono had the weakest solo and needed passion. Vitolio was sent home.

Well, the Asians are going like clockwork. I don't think that Kupono is going to last much longer. I hope Alex Wong can try out next season and get out of his contract. Who should have gone home? Leave your opinions below.

I found it interesting that even though Evan and Randi were maybe a little crapper than Vitolio and Karla it was the couple made up of someone Asian and someone Haitian that the public didn't vote for...I think the fact that Vitolio is from Haiti has maybe worked against him-he's not 'American', maybe same with Max

Why does everyone dislike Kupono so much? He's not one of my favorites but I don't see what's to dislike about him - he seems to be a good dancer and the last couple of weeks he has done really well, and he's not arrogant or rude. . .

I think the only dancer who deserves to go home is Phillip, based on talent alone. The only reason I would like him to stay is so we can see him do some popping but he's had hip hop twice and hasn't really stood out for me either time.

Katee came in 3rd last year and she is of Asian descent (who cares, she was a wonderful dancer and seemed like a lovely girl). She was given a monetary prize because of her beautiful dancing and memorable performances. The people who were voted off were not receiving votes by the public and the judges responded. These dancers were just overshadowed by the other dancers. They all have talent but some shine more on TV than others. Leave race out of it and talk about the dancers and their talent. It's when this stuff is not mentioned that we have moved beyond. Kupono is lucky to still be there ....I don't get it as he was not as talented as Vitolio (dance wise) but is getting more votes clearly.

I do wish so many of you would stop complaining about how this one and that one suck and talking about how some of these kids have no talent. You may like one more than the other - and certainly there are varying degrees of accomplishment among the dancers on this show, but none of them sucks - and each and every one of them is extremely talented. Why must we be so negative - for me I would rather appreciate the beauty and accomplishment of each of these young dancers.

I didn't notice, so much, that the Asians were getting eliminated - it was more of "oh, the minorities are getting eliminated". And no, it's not a racist thing - it's just a mere observationthat a few of the dancers who have been eliminated have been from racial groups other than white.

I'm not saying that it's rigged in some way. I'm probably the last person that would ever comment that a show was "too white" or that a show needed more minorities (and I'm a minority myself!) - I watch shows for the storyline, not the racial makeup.

But you can bet I notice when there are Asians on tv - be it as a character, reality show contestant or in the audience.
------------
Something that bothers me about the bottom 3 - sometimes the judges (Nigel in particular) will say stuff like "America got it wrong - they shouldn't have been in the bottom three" and then like yesterday, most of it was "oh, well, somebody has got to go each week". Yeah, obviously 2 people have to be eliminated but I don't like the intent behind the first comment in that certain people deserve to stay more than others. Tastes are different and just because the judges love somebody, doesn't necessarily mean that "America" does.

I'm not bringing up the race card because I'm standing up for race relations in America or believe in Equal Opportunity Employment (I don't). I think that all the contestants are talented and were picked by the judges because of that. I find it funny how the judges determine the eliminations in the beginning of the show and the Asians weren't up to par in their heads. Kupono sucks, yes, but so did Jonathan , Vitolio, and Tony.

I could be up in arms for the fact that Phillip is the last breaker standing, when hip-hop did so well last year, but similarly, the Judges could be looking for someone who isn't Hip-hop this season. Maybe they aren't looking for an Asian since Katee and Mark did so well last year.

Well, for the parenting side, I think you should look at television for Asians. Reality TV is one of the few places where you don't see an Asian being the geek or in the medical field. I don't think that someone is a loser in life because there is no one representing them, but it would be nice to have someone pave the way.

I know a lot of people who didn't think there could ever be an African-American president and now that Barak Obama is president, there are children out there that now dream to be president. Are you going to take away from that as well?

I find reality television as a parallel to life (the slice of life concept), so having a successful minority (not even just an Asian, but by race, gender or sexuality) on it can have a big impact. Imagine if *gasp* a homosexual like Adam Lambert won American Idol? The fact that he was second I'm sure that I wouldn't be shocked if there weren't more gay kids out there who dream bigger now because someone paved the way. Back to the Asians, I think that Katee helped widen the door with Asians in dance, but so did The Jabbawokeez, Kaba Modern, and So Real Cru on America's Best Dance Crew.

Jonathan said that watching So You Think You Can Dance influenced him to dance. Are you saying that anyone who watches the show is a loser for being influenced by it?

I think having an Asian in the top 10 would promote something positive. Again this show can't be EOE, we're never going to see a really good obese contestant or a talented midget because they can't partner correctly. People were up in arms the night when Jennifer Hudson was eliminated on Idol and Elton John even called the show "racist." Our society thinks in concepts like minorities and the show wants to have a slice of life. With Asian-American's being 5% of America, I guess it's just good to have three in the top 20. It's just a shame that the three sucked.

The best dancers should be on the show, but without a specific scoring system like Dancing with the Stars, how do you judge it? With all the dancers dancing a different style of dance how do you say "Well the Quickstep is better than this Pas de Deux" without having judgments based off of other factors?

I thought Asuka did fine, better than Karla or Caitlin and worse than Melissa, Kayla, Jeanine, and Janette. What made Karla survive an extra week over either? Nigel, Mary and the guest judge that week.

It's a fact that one person will win. Looking at the track records it's probably Kayla or Melissa. Will I be upset because they beat the men? No. Will I be upset because they beat all the minorities? No. I find both of them to be wonderful dancers who are camera friendly. I would be happy to see any of the contestants win, except Kupono because he hasn't proved himself once.

Michael the point is this is a dance contest, what difference does the race of the contestants matter? This isn't, "So you think you can be the token?"

To even bring up race implies that some injustice is being perpetrated against Asians...and playing fill in the blank with another race doesn't change the fact. Why would you think it would make a difference to me if you used Latino?

It sounds like you have some type of persecution complex, and it does not belong in your blog post. Why not try saying the less talented, or popular dancers are "dropping like clockwork"....oh wait that's the purpose of the show, and if you were to simply base your comments on talent, well then you wouldn't have an injustice to whine about.

If the only way for a child to aspire to achieve in a certain area is to see someone of their race successful at it, then that child is destined to be a loser in life thanks to some pretty lousy parenting.

LOL, and how is seeing an Asian in the top 10, and not the top 20, supposed to change the fact that there will only be 1 winner and 19 losers? Will more Asians take their kids to see the tour if an Asian makes it? If yes, then how is that any different than your veiled implications of Asians not getting a fair shake by the voting public or the judges?

I mean if Asians are allowed to favor other Asians based on race instead of talent, why aren't other groups allowed to do the same?

I want the best DANCERS on this show, and I'll leave the under qualified race based quota making for the circus act known as the government.

I'm so disappointed that Kupono is still there. I've been waiting for weeks for him to have gone home. I'm totally aware that Vitolo would have gone next week or the week after and I'm not a fan of his either but gggrrrr.. why must we keep suffering with seeing Kupono.

I was totally shocked about Phillip being in the bottm and not Jason and Caitlin. I think the judges fixed that one to give Phillip a wake up call for him to get off his ass and put himself into the competition. He was getting a little to comfortable thinking he's always gonna be safe and you can tell the judges so don't want him to go anytime soon.

And why are people getting so made about the asian's are going like clockwork... Would it have sounded better if it was states as "The Asians are dropping like flies". I didn't see any racism in that comment it's just a fact that the Asian dancers seem to be going one after the other each week. How is that racist because someone pointed that out. I'm sure everyone and their mother noticed that also. Asuka was a little trashy with the way she danced, Karla is boring as hell and has no personality and Kupono as so annoying to look at and none of that has to do with racism. Just stating a fact regardless of what color or race they are.

I agree, if you suck, you go home. Lack of talent comes in all shapes and sizes.

Actually no I hadn't noticed Asians going home until I read it here. I noticed the least talented dancers going home. Maybe, not in the order I would like, but clearly the bottom tier is "going like clockwork".

LOL, and also I didn't take exception with the term "going like clockwork"...it was the fact that race was even brought into it.

Who cares what race the least talented dancers are....the boot still looks and feels the same as they're ousted from the show. THAT was my point, and I prefer focusing on the talent...particularly in a talent based contest.
