Don Rickles on the D-List, The Tonight Show, and more

Don RicklesIt's always great to see Don Rickles on TV. He's rarely out of form, and he has a knack for sailing some great zingers past the censors. Which means his appearance on last night's My Life on the D-List was a perfect opportunity, a place where he could be a bit more loose.

We got a taste of that from him, walking around Kathy Griffin's house, but we also got a glimpse of the guy I have heard about from comedians who've met Rickles - the old softie who is ever willing to talk shop with other comics. It was a great moment when Griffin and Rickles talked about how both of their mothers would try to tell them not to pick on people so much, with Griffin's mom providing a bit of the dialogue. Meeting Rickles was on Griffin's mother's "bucket list."

I thought I'd use the occasion to take a look around YouTube to find some of Rickles' best TV appearances. He seems to have been everywhere, from The View to cable.

On
The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, 1984
Rickles was a favorite of Johnny Carson's, a frequent guest who got a lot of leeway on the panel. In this clip from 1984, he takes a swipe at Carson for his divorce proceedings, and kids Ed McMahon about having so many jobs and being in better financial shape than Johnny.

On
The Late Show with David Letterman, 2008
You can compare The Tonight Show clip to this one from last year with David Letterman, and see Rickles is working the same themes, incredibly with the same energy, and doesn't miss anything in the room. He catches Paul looking over some music in mid rant.

On
The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, 2008
Again from last year. Ferguson is obviously enjoying the back and forth, whenever he can get a word in. It's fun watching Ferguson, who doesn't lack for energy himself, trying to keep up. Rickles starts a couple of stories, and he has a lot to tell, but can't go too long without slamming someone, whether it's Clint Eastwood, Robert DeNiro, or Ferguson himself.

Part I

Part II

On
Comic Relief, 1992
I couldn't post this without a clip of Rickles doing stand-up. Rickles decimates Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams before a group hug, and then a big slap to Williams' face.

there is an amazing Saturday Night Live episode he did a decade or two back when he kept the same joke going in different skits. His SNL castmates couldn't stop laughing when he did that. It was hilarious.
