Good omens for Dollhouse season two?

by Mike Moody, posted Jul 9th 2009 3:06PM
dollhouse fox elizaIt seems like everyone has an opinion about whether or not Dollhouse will survive its second season on Fox. Our own Brad Trechak is certain the show will be dead before the end of the year. Io9 has a more hopeful prognosis for the show's future. They say we might even be in for a surprisingly stable year for the show.

I'm not willing to go that far, but I'm hopeful that season two of Dollhouse will deliver more of the quirky and engaging storytelling Joss Whedon fans have come to love and expect instead of the dull "case of the week" plots that almost sunk season one. Last May's weird and wonderful game-changing season finale only left me wanting more -- more mythology, more mystery and more witty and subversive dialogue. Whedon is writing and directing the season two opener, now set to premiere Sept. 25. Hopefully, that means he's setting the tone for a more imaginative and interesting season of Dollhouse.

Whether or not Fox will allow him to do that is still debatable, but the network seems to be showing support for Dollhouse in its own strange way. They're airing "Epitaph One," the series' "lost" episode, at a super-sized panel at this year's San Digeo Comic-Con. The Whedon-directed ep will also appear as a bonus on the season one DVD and Blu-Ray sets.

Considering most of us thought we'd never get to see this ep, much less a second season, I'm calling this a good omen. And here's some more good news: They've hired Firefly alum Tim Minear as executive producer, and Joss has talked about bringing Terminator's Summer Glau on the show. (Now how about a recurring role for Amber Benson?)

And now we have a clip from "Epitaph One," an episode reportedly set in a post-apocalyptic future and that, er, might actually be a dream, or a fantasy sequence, or a prequel or something weird like that. Enjoy:

I have just seen season 1 and OMG..
I thought the premise and possibilities of the story line were enormous but again OMG...
OMG it was bad..
How the F... could this show survive one more season when a show like TSCC couldn´t .

This show started off kindda ok but ended up like a damn boring mess.

I am amased they gave this crap a second season.
Last episode was so boring I had to see it over the period of a month or so... :

I find his loyalty to Summer Glau perplexing. Sure, she's lithe, but I hope the woman and her dubious acting ability stay far away from *Dollhouse,* while I'd welcome any of the other *Firefly* women.

I will be tuning in for sure. Alan Tudyk's performance in the finale last year as Alpha blew me away, he did an amazing job. Now hearing that Joss is trying to bring in some more Firefly alum just makes it all the more worth while. I think that if Fox backs not only the show but Whedon himself and would just let him do things the way he wants then the show could have a fair amount of success even in the Friday night death slot.

Brad Trechak won't fail. Dollhouse should be canceled. It's a really worse show.

Friday nights will kill it regardless. It became a great show, but the timeslot is just ridiculous.

Friday won't kill it - the Network's insistence that only live eyeballs count while continuing to ignore the significant time-shift and online viewing audience will kill it.

Nevermind that commercials can be just as easily ignored/skipped by anyone with a DVR during live viewing.

These case of the week story lines almost made me stop watching the show. I've tried so hard to like it and be excited about it, but it's predictable and dull. I've seen more exciting Matlock episodes than the majority of the first season of dollhouse.

That said, I'm still here because I'm hoping they're going to turn it around. I freely admit to being a Whedon junkie, but right now this show just isn't calming my cravings. I hope more than anything that this will turn into the WhedonCrack that I've come to expect and be addicted to.

One of the gifts "Lost" has given us is more imaginative TV and a greater acceptence of Sci-Fi leaning writing.Fringe of course is an example helped by Abrams.I hope Fox sees all this and let's Joss do his own thing and push the envelope. That's the only way the show will survive especially beyond season 2.with so much Sci-Fi in the pipeline they have to let Dollhouse be more than formula.

Hm...Felicia Day on Dollhouse - that should sell some DVDs.

Tim Minear? That's a good sign. Hopefully things will go well next season.
