I want to live at the Universal prop house

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 13th 2009 5:24PM
Is there any place that looks more fun to play in than the Universal prop house that Conan O'Brien visited the other night on The Tonight Show? It houses 400,000 different items that have been used or will be used in various TV shows and movies. It's a TV/movie-lover's amusement park. Sure, it's an amusement park housed in a basement, but it looks like the warehouse from Raiders of the Lost Ark (or Warehouse 13).

To prove how geeky I am about this stuff, the props that fascinate me the most are the old phones. I just know one of those phones is the one Jim Rockford used.

My sister and I were on the VIP tour last month - the prop department was definitely the best part of the tour. I loved how every aisle was labeled - "XMas & Liqueur Bottles and "Animal Cages & Diving Gear" were my favorite ones. The VIP tour lets you wander around the department and take photos. They even gave us some props from the movie State of Play - press passes that were used in the movie. If you're going to do Universal, I'd recommend taking the VIP tour (you get to go to the front of the lines, have a private buffet lunch, a better tour of the lots and the guides are great).

They didn't give us a wide shot, but from what was shown, I can tell you that the Sony prop house in Marina Del Rey (off of Jefferson) is far bigger than that one. Not only that, anybody can wander around. No passes needed.
