BBC America serves up first seven minutes of new Torchwood

by John Scott Lewinski, posted Jul 15th 2009 7:04PM
The Children of Earth announce a new challenge for the Torchwood crew.Following its smash hit run on BBC1 in the U.K., Torchwood: "Children of Earth" is heralding its U.S. arrival next week by presenting the first seven minutes of the first episode, "Day One."

The week-long, five episode mini-series has already generated enough spoilers here at TV Squad and around the web, so we'll take care to avoid repeat performances here. For now, stateside viewers can visit BBC America's video page to watch the first seven minutes of the third season's first show in which Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) dies of Ptomaine poisoning.

The first 20 minutes of the same episode were already available on the BBC America On Demand channel included with some cable services.

It's no spoiler to reveal that "Children of Earth" was a huge success for BBC1, averaging around 6 million viewers per episode throughout its run last week. British fans continue to buzz on how far the show has come since its uneven and occasionally silly first season.

Torchwood: "Children of Earth" premieres on BBC America at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Monday, July 20 and runs throughout the week -- as it did on U.K. TV. Many American fans have already tuned into the series via less than ethical online means, but those who want to keep the premiere pure should stay as far away from Torchwood fan sites as possible.

Any word on the run time? it was 58 minutes in the UK. Is BBC America editing or padding with commercial?

This is a skinch confusing, so bear with me.

According to their website schedule, BBCA lists each of the episodes at 75 minutes, but only on the first day each is broadcast, with the recap repeat cut back to 60. So Monday's episode on Monday will be 75 minutes, but the Tuesday repeat of Monday's episode will only be 60, etc.

Additionally, there's a 15 minute "Inside Look" at each day's episode following the 75 minute versions, but not the 60.

Also - Monday, before the first episode, there's an hour long "Torchwood: Inside The Hub" special that doesn't seem to be running any other day during the week.

So the overall gist seems to be: to get the best experience, make sure you DVR/tape/whatever each episode with extras on the day it's broadcast.
