Rifftrax hits theaters nationwide with Plan 9 from Outer Space

by John Scott Lewinski, posted Jul 16th 2009 10:04AM
Rifftrax is bringing plan 9 from outer space to movie theaters live.Rifftrax, the Mystery Science Theater 3000 descendant written and performed by Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, is taking its show live to the nation's movie theaters on August 20.

In a move sure to draw desperate MST3K fans from out of their parents' basements (this reporter among them -- though my folks' old house only has a washer/dryer downstairs), Fathom Events will present the Rifftrax trio live in theaters via vid-cast up on the big screen.

They'll take on Ed Wood's classically inept Plan 9 from Outer Space, a movie they've wrestled with on DVD and in past live shows.

Originating from the Belcourt Theater in Nashville, Tenn., the show goes live August 20 at 8 PM ET, 7 PM CT, and 6 PM MT. It'll be tape delayed for an 8 PM PT showing.

This event will be hosted by Veronica Belmont, host of Qore on the PlayStation Network, and will feature musical guest Jonathan Coulton. The Rifftrax guys will open by going off on a short.

And since MST3K and Rifftrax fans are intelligent, well-read individuals who know the value of swag, all attendees will receive free digital treats, including a download-able short and an autographed digital photo. A URL and download code will be revealed on-screen at the end of the event.

I appreciated the heads up about this. After I got off work, I went to my local theater to get tickets. Can't wait. Still watch MST-3K from time to time.
